Garcia’s Mexican Food Restaurant

Very solid Mexican restaurant. If you are looking for something upscale or unique — not it. If you are looking for Mex food dialed in solidly with great staff — this is it. The restaurant is in a classic strip mall. It’s Fiesta Food style with waitresses in fiesta like blouses. The interior is clean, well laid out, reasonably roomy. As soon as you arrive, the cashier/​owner hussles to get you to a seat. The waitress we had was fantastic and nice. I had the #4 combination and really liked it: tamale, rice, beans, cheese enchilada & chicken mole. The tortillas that came with it were to die for! Wow they were good. Probably home made. My son ate his full plate for the first time ever. I will definitely be going back.

Garcia’s has the best Tortilla Soup in San Marcos! In a college town, they are always bustling with local customers. Their service is excellent, and a manager always visits your table to check on you. Plus, the restrooms are cleaned frequently.

There is nothing on the menu I haven’t tried and enjoyed!
I’ve been going to this restaurant since I was about 9 years old, so I am a bit partial, but this is the Mexican food restaurant I measure all other’s against – and I’ve never found anything as comparable. Do you like enchiladas? They’re delicious! Fajitas? The best. Breakfast tacos??? Yes! But by far the biggest standouts here for me are the Queso and the Tortilla Soup. They are the best. I no longer live in the San Marcos area, and I miss the Queso and Tortilla soup more than anything. Please come by and check this place out. You will not be disappointed!

Tasty, reasonable, but avoid TAKEOUT because you get thimble-​sized servings, no chips, no salsa, no tortilla.
btw, All serving sizes have noticeable diminished 2015, but golly – take-​out was less than ¼ cup each of beans, rice, not enough sauce to wet the enchiladas – get the puny picture? And we tipped before exiting the door, and opening the box. bummer

The food is ok and the cost is acceptable. While I would go again if someone wanted to, I would probably never choose it.

My fajitas were amazing! Some of the best tasting seasoned beef I’ve ever eaten! The atmosphere was awesome and they were playing good Texan music in the background! Most importantly their prices are really reasonable.

Outstanding real Mexican food! Great price! Great food! Great service! Definitely worth your money!

The lady next to me found a bug in her food! Food is ok, service was par. Collage kids who don’t care. I watched the lady fold silverware and touch the head of every fork! Gross!

Drove all over SM trying to find this place because of the good reviews. Love little hole in the wall TexMex places! Found it to be pretty good but not a home run. Must mention right away the awful, loud, intrusive, totally annoying country/​western piped in music. So loud you had to strain to hear your table mates, which is ridiculous. We asked the waitress if it could be turned down a bit, but we got this obviously oft-​repeated response that the boss never does that! Really? Wow, guess the customer is not king after all.
The food was good but could have been hotter temperature-​wise. Out of 10 for the combo special, I’d say it rated a 7. The standout definitely was the carne guisada– about the best I’ve had in some time! I did appreciate that a small scoop of that was included on the combo special, because you never see that. I’d recommend this place for the carne guisada alone, so give it a try. And by the way, the drooling on Unilocal over the chips here is odd, because as far as we could tell, it’s the same chips you can get almost anywhere in Austin.

Chips are homemade fresh and tasty.
Chicken taco salad was great. Chicken enchiladas were just OK. Our server was warm and friendly. Tres Leches was a good finish. Prices are low

The food was EXCELLENT.
The service was lacking.
The staff was nice though so I liked that; they were just slow and a little forgetful.
Otherwise, I highly recommend their take on a chicken fried chicken. It’s smothered in queso, which by the way, I recommend as well, (my number one queso now), and super tender. The sweet tea is good, the chips are good, the rice is delicious and stands out far beyond every other Mexican restaurant.

I have been going to Garcia’s for the past 3 years now. I love the location on wonder world and don’t have any complaints there. However, the S LBJ location has continuously disappointed me. The food is still excellent quality, but the service has been awful. The first time I had a bad experience I thought it might have been a fluke, but it has happened every time I go there.
Once, I waited 20 minutes for the waitress to refill my water, twice during dinner! She didn’t seem interested in us at all. Our food came out more than an hour later, extremely cold.
Another time, our waiter was so obviously overworked. We were one of two large parties he was in charge of in addition to his other tables. His overall demeanor was very off putting. Again we waited over an hour for food.
I think management at this location needs to take a lesson from whatever the wonder world location is doing. They don’t seem to be training their employees well, and that leads to a bad experience for the customer. I will not be going back to this location again because of it.

I absolutely LOVE Garcia’s! When I lived in San Marcos I would come about once a week, but now that I live in Georgetown I go every single time I’m in town. I don’t even look at other restaurants because I need my sour cream enchilada and salsa fix. The food is always exactly as ordered, comes out fast and hot, and the service is always spot on! I have never had a single issue and I have been coming here for about 4 years. I wish they would build one in the north Austin/​round rock/​georgetown area. We would be there weekly!

If you’re in San Marcos, you’ve got to go to Garcia’s. I’m warning you: it can get packed, and service sometimes suffers because of that, but the food makes it all worth it. The chips and salsa are some of the best I know of. The chips are perfectly crispy with almost an earthy grain flavor from the corn. The salsa is rich and tomatoey, with just the right amount of spice. I’ve tried countless things on the menu and have never been disappointed. The enchiladas are homemade tasting and gooey, the fajitas perfectly grilled, you really can’t go wrong. And one of the best parts? The prices are great, very cheap! You can get a lunch special for about $ 5, but even their dinner plates are all less than $ 10. Garcia’s is a must-​go!!!

This place is delicious! We have been here a few times and will continue to return. Not only is the food excellent but the service is impeccable! We are huge on good customer service and they always take care of us so well.
I can’t wait to bring family here when they visit!

The chili con queso is to die for and the chips melt in your mouth here. I can say that I’ve never had chips these good before! The cheese enchiladas were delicious. The rice reminds me of my grandmas homemade rice which is amazing. The sweet tea is perfect and so refreshing! I am from San Antonio and this is hands down one of my top favorite Mexican restaurants now that I’ve had it!

Enchilada Dinner… Cheese Enchiladas were good. The rice and beans were great… The hot, hot sauce was great too. Good meal.

I only really come here for one thing. Menudo in the early morning weekend. Their chips and salsa are great too. At the Wonder World location, the chips come out straight from the fryer, it seems. Still warm to the touch.
Service is hit or miss. If the server knows someone you’re with, then they treat you quite well. I always see the boss lady (I think she’s the boss lady) come around and greet her customers. She seems to know half of them personally.
Last time, our waiter, let’s just call him Mr. Gringo, was hard to find. We basically had to ask for everything, and he ended up not refilling my friend’s coffee. He also got my to-​go taco order wrong. I think he had a hangover. He kept saying he was still waking up.
I like their menudo. It tastes good after a five mile run.
That is all.

This is the original and is close to Texas State & downtown. It’s in an old strip center and you could miss it if you didn’t know it was there. I highly recommend the booths that stretch down the far right wall.
I may be a little prejudiced, but I think the food is better here than any of the other Garcia’s. It also seems like they keep the prices lower here at this location. That may be to help out the college kids. Also, it appears that they hire a lot of college kids for the wait staff positions. Last night, our waitress was trying to sell my daughter on going to school at Texas State:). She was a great ambassador for the both the school & restaurant.
They served us immediately with their great chips and salsa. Then we ordered the queso — so good! I ordered the Tres Garcia’s, and it was as great as ever.
I have been going here for years and can’t believe I never reviewed. If you love great Tex-​Mex, then you need to give this place a try
