Can I just say, «muy rico»?! Authentic tortas ahogadas are something I dream about! Do not pass this place! The ingredients are simple, fresh and artfully applied to each dish. Clearly you can tell that so much love goes into their menu. Don’t forget the strawberry horchata! Such a sweet finish to a delicious drowned sandwich. By the way, go for the mix of lean and fatty carnitas!

Based on the reviews, I decided to give this place a shot. It was my last weekend in San Antonio, and I wanted a lunch place close to the hotel so I could walk there and burn off the excess calories! Lol. I had no idea what to order, to start off. As the cashier rang up orders, the cook cut up bread and packed pork into the slices of bread, pouring this amazing red sauce on top. I asked the guys behind me what a regular normally orders, and they pointed to the cook, who was about to hand them tortas ahogados. I also noticed that many customers accompanied their tortas with a Mexican Coke. I decided to enjoy the experience and order the same. I absolutely did not regret it one bit! The bread is crispy on the outside, and the pork is delicious! I love how the pork was drowning in the red sauce. Each of these tortas came in baskets wrapped with clear, plastic bags, so that clean up was easy. You literally roll down the plastic bag when you’re done, tie a knot, and toss the rest into the trash. But be prepared to be messy while eating this amazing torta! Your fingers will drip with the red sauce, but your mouth and stomach will be so happy! Lol.

I love tortas so much so that after travelling to Mexico recently I decided to make my own at home. Fresh homemade Birote and everything. Naturally when I heard about Ro-Jo I jumped in my car and immediately headed their way. The place is small. Very small. I had to eat standing up since there was no place to sit. This was 1 o’clock on a Wed. I ordered the Torta Ahogada that came with a beautifully crusted birote bread. It came with some shredded cabbage as well as some shredded red onion. The sauce was a very simple red tomato sauce that lacked any flavor whatsoever. The pork was soft and tender but again lacked flavor. They say that this place is owned by a chef but it appears this chef left his spice jars at home. Some pickled jalapeños or perhaps some sliced avocado would have done wonders here. I also ordered a pineapple agua fresca that more than likely came from a syrup. The kind that you just add water to make. Roho only offers one type of hot sauce which to me is disappointing given the blandness of my torta. I wanted something else to liven my bland tomato sauce. Was it bad? No was it great? No Was it average? Yes

It’s ok. Good pork. Good picante. The bread was very hard, a little too hard. The ahogado sauce was ok. The atmosphere is a glorified molino, very tight and nothing special. There’s a window to watch the tortillas being made, but it looks like a dungeon in there. Machines making tortillas doesn’t excite me. The place is the old«Sanitary tortillas» place and still is. Not a great name, and my wife won’t get their tortillas because the name doesn’t feel clean. I may come back for the torta. We’ll see.

Awesome. Tacos Durangos — perfect texture combination with crunchy radishes, crispy tortilla, beautifully spiced pulled pork, similar to adobo. Add spicy red sauce, and drink a strawberry horchata with it.

This is a restaurant that I hope stays a hidden gem. We visited on a Sunday around 1pm. The restaurant had a steady flow, but with plenty of space to seating. This place is small, so all seating is bar type seating. The menu is limited. Today there was four items. We ordered the torta ahogada, the nachos and two aguas frescas. The food was different. Don’t expect your typical Mexican fare. The torta was covered In a tomato sauce. The bread was not soggy, but could get soggy if left in the sauce too long. I’m not sure if that is the point of the sauce. The nachos were also covered in this sauce and I didn’t see cheese. The nachos had cabbage and red onions on top. Both were delicious. Expect to get your hands dirty while enjoying the scrumptious food. The food is prepared on the spot in front of you. Service is fast and they employees are knowledgeable. You can also buy specialty tortillas.

Great quick lunch stop. Friend and I split a torta and two tacos. Both were very yummy. Word to the wise: don’t wear silk, or any clothing that can’t handle stains. Food is delicious but very messy! Come prepared.

Delicious food ! Visiting Texas on a business trip and had to try these wet torta sandwiches. My son and I love it! Sauce is so good like a soup by itself and the fresh bread was perfect. We also tried the taco which was the same meat Carnitas and that was great too. I’m definitely recommending this to all my friends and family. Thank you for the kind service Chef Jorge and your beautiful staff.

Yes, please. Again! I kinda can’t believe that hooker Donna P. 1) didn’t bring me with her or 2) didn’t send me a photo with«GETYOURSELFHERENOW» as soon as she left. I’m going to assume she was too blissed out to think of it instead of cutting her out of my life altogether, which I almost feel would be appropriate for eliminating this level of important information.

Worth the wait. Got here at 1:00 had a bit of a wait but I’ll tell you what! The torta was immaculate, the bread was devilishly fine, the tripe was supple, the sauce was perfect. Can’t say it enough THESAUCEWASPERFECT. After eating my sandwich I spooned the sauce into my mouth like soup!

First things first, I got there at ten minutes before closing. The man behind the counter, Rafael, was not bothered in the slightest and he engaged me in conversation to tell me about the place and their offerings. Their style is from Guadalajara Mexico and is a staple for the bar crowd after a night of drinking. They make everything in house and the taste reflects authentic Mexican while not being too spicy. They offer a hot sauce, but it is hot and I wanted to savor the sauce as it comes. As Rafael was preparing my food a couple of real life Mariachis walked in, right at closing time and they were greeted warmly and asked what they wanted regardless of the time. Hey, when Mariachis walk in to your place, you serve them. They could eat and have eaten just about anywhere and they love this place. Shout out to Mariachi Mexicanisimo! The Torta Ahogada was delicious. The fresh bread was crispy on the outside while tender on the inside. The Carnitas were tender and lean. Next time I’ll try the Mesclado which has pork belly and pork butt. The Torta is served with pickled onions dusted with Mexican Oregano and some sliced cabbage. After you eat the Torta, grab a spoon because the sauce that’s left on your bowl is awesome! I will return and bring friends.

4.5 stars. All the talk about Ro-Ho Pork and Bread focuses on the torta ahogada, which is legitimately outstanding with its robust, flavorful tomato sauce creating a warm bath for layers upon layers of pork skin, shoulder, and stomach tucked within fresh in-house birote bread. And yet, the dorado tacos, essentially using the exact same ingredients and substituting a crisp taco shell for birote, might be even better(note to reader: don’t confuse dorado with dorade — there are no fish tacos at Ro-Ho Pork… or non-pork items for that matter). The chef at Ro-Ho Pork apparently ran a restaurant near Guadalajara for approximately 15 years, and I ran into one Guadalajaran regular who spoke to the authenticity of the food here. I can say I’ve never had a previous sandwich quite like the torta ahogada. You’ll want to keep one hand clean to grab napkins and the sort while using your other hand to eat all the yummy pork goodness and delicious tomato sauce. The bread is well-made; it doesn’t become a soggy disaster halfway through the experience. I had a room for a bit more food which led to the dorado taco order. In the future, I’ll have to take down 3 – 4 of those stellar creations. Also, take some pork cracklins to go. Trying these treats fresh makes one understand how these pork chips were once a staple in fast food diets. If you are lover of all things pig, you owe it to yourself to try this place out. There is exactly zero question this will become a weekend ritual for me.

I’ve been here twice now, both on a Sunday, and had a delicious time. For Sundays, you need to get there early if you want to have the whole menu available to you since they sell out of certain items(tamales) soon into the operating hours. Can’t really be mad at that. I had them the second time and they were very good. Nothing to write home about, but they’re better than most. The tortas are messy, but absolutely delicious. Bread is crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. The pork is flavorful and very tender. You barely have to chew it and the sauce, when mixed with the table salsa, is perfect. Seating is pretty limited, but the dine-in crowd rotates pretty fast. The entire staff is very welcoming and seems to really enjoy their customers. They also take time, regardless of the crowd, to answer any questions you might have regarding the menu. The menu is simple, but I believe that allows them to keep the quality high. There’s bread, tortillas, bunuelos, and salsa for sale, and the entire menu is a la carte. Definitely a nice find.

Wow! Damn that bread is ridiculously good. Deserves my coveted 5 stars, and I rarely give those out. On my day off I was trying to figure out what to eat then I remembered this place thanks to my Unilocal friends(thanks Stephen C, Sonia & Jeremy!!!). So first– it’s in a weird little location. I missed the turn the exit and missed the turn on top of that but I found it. And let me say– well worth the drive. First the chef gave me pointers on what to order and how to eat. I mean who goes against the man who created the deliciousness that you are about to ingest? Not I ! After the quick tutorial, he recommend the pork belly torta so that’s what I went with. A glass of horchata completed my order– not sure why it is pink but nonetheless I drank it. Very tasty. As for the sandwich– I was able to maintain my composure and somehow it was not as messy as it could have been. I like the fact that he stood up the sandwich instead of covering it with the salsa– I think I prefer it this way because you have more control of how soft your torta will be. And I am all about control! The torta is served with onion & cabbage on the side. So before you take a bite you dip your torta in the salsa it comes with then you add a little onion & a little cabbage — add some salsa that’s available on the table for extra heat– add just a wee bit of salt. And POW! You have heaven in each bite. The bread is crusty and the sauce that you dunk it in make is soft but the bread remains crusty. Oh RoHo– I am already dreaming about you!!! I will be back to try the others– I picked up some tortillas as a left– I mean why not!!! Go and enjoy!

Unilocal may I please give this place 10 stars instead of 5 please? I’m asking nicely :) I ordered the Torta Ahogada and was given the choice of pork butt, pork belly or pork skin. I selected a mix of belly and skin. Fantastic! I loved every bite. I added a little bit of the hot sauce and that was so very very good! As this was my first experience with eating a Torta Ahogada, Jorge was nice enough to teach me the proper way to eat this wonder treat. Use one and only one hand for the sandwich. This becomes the dirty hand. Keep the other hand clean for grabbing napkins, your beverage or your phone in case you want to Unilocal.Don’t bother trying to clean the dirty hand until the Torta Ahogada is all gone. I also got a 20 pack of the thin corn tortillas. Those are so very good. Just the way I like my corn tortillas. This is my new favorite place for tortillas in San Antonio. I am so looking forward to my next trip back here for another delicious Torta Ahogada!

After seeing the pictures posted on Unilocal,I had to check out this place. This place is legit!!! This is a hidden gem in SA. A little hard to find and parking might be a challenge, but in the end it is so worth it. Their specialty is the Torta Ahogada(which means drowned) the torta is made from a birote(a Mexican version of French bread) with a touch of hot sauce, not too much, roasted pork, then drowned in tomato sauce that is seasoned with onion and a touch of garlic. Served with a side of pickled red onions and cabbage. If you want to kick it up a notch, there is more hot sauce at the counters, if you dare. Now eating the torta is challenge. So I would advice to wear an old t-shirt and prepare to use a lots of paper towels. You can open up the torta and add some red onions and cabbage if you like(I personally do) it adds to the flavor and a nice crunch. I recommend to eat the torta there and enjoy it with some hibiscus tea or some horchata. The service is great, and I will certainly come back to try their tacos. They also sell tortillas, and in the future they are planning on selling carnitas. Can’t wait.

A friend recommended this place to me. Being the pork lover that I am, I had to check it out. As many of the other reviews have mentioned, the Torta Ahogada is the way to go. After Chef Jorge prepared the sandwich right in front of me, he gave me tips on how to eat it properly: choose one hand to handle the torta(it will get messy), squeeze the lime on top, add some onions, and finally add the hot sauce to bring it all together. «WOW» is all I can say. It’s rare that I get hooked on a brand new food after one bite, but the Torta Ahogada here is oh so good! The fresh birote bread(traditionally from Guadalajara) is baked in house. When it’s time to assemble the torta, the bread is filled with succulent pieces of carnitas and finally the entire torta is bathed in a flavorful red sauce. How can you not like this sandwich? Each bite is packed with flavor. You need to eat here. Chef Jorge also offers barbacoa, tacos, nachos, and agua frescas on the menu. I will definitely be back for more!

Deliciosas Tortas Ahogadas!!!
