Was very sad to find out today that G & G will no longer be at the Boardwalk… only catering private parties… sniff sniff :-(((

Visited G&G after trying to find them in downtown a while back and being unsuccessful, at their new digs at The Boardwalk on Bulverde. Love the new gourmet food truck park. G&G has a menu that, I think, changes daily. When we were there it was actually my daughter who ordered here & I got to try hers. It was a mushroom & goat cheese sandwich that was very tasty and at a very reasonable price. I love that you can now get truly gourmet food at fast food prices. Can’t wait to order from them next & try something new.

[NOTETHENEWLOCATION: The Boardwalk on Bulverde, 14732 Bulverde Road] I’ve been a procrastinator all my life — with widely varied outcomes. Yes, I’ve missed some opportunities entirely, been late to others… but nearly as often, my intrinsic indolence works to my advantage. And so it is with my long-awaited trip to G & G Mobile Bistro, which — at its previous location near the Mission District — was just too durned far for me to simply breeze down to check it out. So I tabled the idea — for consideration at a later date. With the inception of the Boardwalk on Bulverde, however, G & G — as well as several other upscale mobile eateries — are now within easy driving(and noshing) distance. This being the case, I FINALLY visited. My recent meal there amounted to dessert, only because I’d already stuffed myself with the tasty wares of another vendor in the park, and was flat unable to try the other sumptious-sounding(and smelling) courses on the daily menu. That day, the lineup was turnip and bosc pear bisque, arugula/pickled onion/cherub tomato salad, and grilled pork loin with grilled brussell sprouts and purple hull peas. The menu varies from day-to-day, though — with equally unlikely but brilliant culinary pairings. Oh, and about this dessert: a slice of spicy, nutty pumpkin bread, with just a slight drizzle of cajeta, dusted with finely-chopped pistachios-and-panko-bread-crumbs and a handful of plump fresh berries — words can just not convey the perfection of that particular meld of flavors and textures!(Is Gus Gonzalez a gustatory genius, or what???) So in the intervening days, I’ve looked at G & G’s Facebook page… um, reopening Tuesday… I wonder, I really wonder, if I can wait two more days to sample more of G & G’s fantastic creations?

G&G might be the yummiest food in the coolest setting in SA. Don’t let winter scare you away from this outdoor dining experience along the Mission Reach of the Riverwalk; bring a jacket, hat, mittens — whatever it takes. You will not be disappointed. Everything I’ve ever had here has been season, cooked, and garnished to perfection. Last night they served me and my friends salmon and hangar steak. Everyone raved about their meals, at our lovely picnic table alongside a roaring fire pit. Lauren was a great drink server and Gabe was a gracious host and the prices are ridiculously affordable given the flavors and quality. I can’t wait to go back. I could eat here every night.

Not only are they on Michelin Tires, but these guys deserve to be Michelin rated. The G & G Mobile Bristro is no roach coach, taco truck or weenie wagon. Gus & Gabe go over the top offering the finest cuisine south of Southtown. They rotate their menu with offerings you’d expect to see on the cover of Food & Wine, not find behind a hole in the wall rock and roll club(Boneshakers). That’s what is half the fun about The G & G, a little adventure on a seemingly sketchy side of town to get a little taste of some chef school delights. For $ 14 you can get a four course meal of some pretty quality creations and they have lots of vegetarian options. Become a fan of their facebook page to see what they’re serving and when they open. And do make that trek under the bridge from downtown to the G & G, you will not be disappointed. The best way is on a bicycle along the new river trail.

Now located behind boneshakers, G&G serves up damn good stuff out of a food truck. $ 14 for a four course meal, yeah the portions are small, but they packed full of flavor. Blue pumpkin bisque with black pepper brie was delicious out of a plastic cup. A little salad with apple and goat cheese toast was refreshing and tangy. The all star of my meal though was the impeccably cooked pork skewers with chimichurri. The pork was the most tender and juicy thing that’s been in my mouth since i dated Brad last summer. The finale was a rich brownie with nuts and cream, again I was swept away to thoughts of Brad and his… SNAP to it man, your writing a restaurant review! They do great work here and errybody should visit, again $ 14 for four courses can’t be beat! One gripe(as always) there’s no lighting, so you can barely see your food, i used my phone all night to illuminate the plates. Also i feel so wasteful with all the plastic wear, straight in the garbage.

Revised as of Apr 2011, G&G is no longer is regularly open but in addition to catering will be doing the occasional special dinner. Follow them on Facebook to find out what’s going on — they’ll announce a date and a menu, and if they get enough reservations(usually 20), it’s a go. I went to their first at Bauhaus Media Group(they have an awesome rooftop padio) and it was great. — G&G my favorite«restaurant» /dining experience. The food is always fresh, simple, creative, and affordably priced, and the owners really care about what they’re doing. Easily rivals any of the fine dining restaurants in town, with the bonus that you can wear shorts and flip flops. Sandwiches and small plate main entrees around $ 8 each, multi course menus from $ 15 – 20. Menu changes frequently. Cash only.

Great sample menu for a great price. Straight behind building and to the right of the river, look for the cars.

High atop a hill overlooking the San Antonio River(and across from the old Pearl Brewery), look for a hand-painted sign advertising this miraculous food trailer. Tree-shaded tables and cable spools create an outdoor dining room cooled by evening breezes and funky ‘50s jazz pop tunes you’ve likely never heard before. But that’s nothing compared to the real reason you’re there. The two Gs cook up clever, delicious and affordable food. And trust me, after a few days vacationing on the Riverwalk, you’ll understand how rarely those three descriptors exist in the same sentence. G. and G., the two chaps who run this outdoor bistro, are enthusiastic and talented. We discovered them walking back from the Pearl Brewery, when one of the duo climbed down the hill to hand us a flyer.(Sandwiches for $ 4-$ 6; entrée for $ 7; dessert for $ 4.) Had we not just eaten at the Saturday Farmer’s Market, we’d have clamored up for some grub. But to our delight, G.(or G. — not sure which one we were talking to) informed us that they’d be serving dinner starting at 6. So we returned that evening via river taxi. G&G Mobile Bistro is located behind the SWC Club, a giant yellow box of a place at the corner of Myrtle and Elmira. Myrtle. And Elmira. You just can’t make this stuff up. But I digress. Though G&G has an a la carte menu listing many a fetching item, we went with their three-course dinner: salad, entrée and dessert for $ 12. — The salad. Fresh greens and cherry tomatoes purchased from the Pearl Brewery Farmer’s Market earlier that day. Tasty, with a light, citrus infused dressing, blue cheese and walnuts. Simple and just right. — The entrée. Our two choices were a grilled pork loin and potatoes and pears and served under sautéed peppers, or a spiced beef shish kebob with lentil and asparagus salad. We went with the pork(though I should have ordered the kebab just to sample two entrees… it was our last day in SA and by then I had stopped thinking altogether). The sizable pork loin was delicious, and though I’ve had some that was a bit more tender, I wouldn’t call it tough by any means. The potatoes and pears were a nice combination, and the peppers added moisture and sweetness. Nice job, G.(or G… not sure who was in there cooking.) — The dessert. Grilled pan dulce with sautéed apples, strawberry sauce, sweet crème and walnuts. Man, oh man. This was a nice finish. Visually appealing, fresh tasting(yet again), tart and not too sweet, it was an unusual concoction that paired a pleasantly charred triangle of pan sweet bread with fruit and crème. — Agua fresca. We got a big glass of this thrown in for the $ 12, and many offers for refills. It was nice and light, and added to the picnic feel. Service is attentive and sincere. These guys approach you bathed in sweat because the trailer is hot and this is San Antonio. Everything is served in the boat-shaped cardboard containers you find in old school fast food places, with plastic utensils and paper napkins. Our trip to San Antonio was a series of discoveries, and G. & G. proved to be one of the best. We wish these guys the greatest success. As we were finishing, a family showed up for a party of some kind, so it looked like the start of what might be a busy night. Hopefully the people who drink at the SWC Club get hungry and mosey back for some grub. And hopefully the rest of San Antonio will discover this trailer, as we did, on a stroll along the Museum Reach, on a glorious evening, in a place where you can dine on the river while watching birds, ducks, boats and joggers — and the world itself — pass you by. Under the trees. As the sun sets. In old San Antonio.
