The soup was the best thing they had there. The rest of the food was ok. The service was slow and it’s a small place with not a lot of people. Never once asked if we needed anything after ordering, not even a refill.

Excellent food. Decent prices. The soup my husband got was amazing and so was the salad. We devoured both in minutes. Meal came to be under 50 for two and our server was attentive to our table without being pushy and interrupting us.

I was told by my friends that these is the place to go for real Japanese food and to be honest I was kind of disappointed. We ordered cha shau ramen and sushi A set on the lunch menu that came with miso soup. We also ordered takoyaki(the octopus ball) as appetizer. Cha shau ramen was a huge disappointment, first it was not hot, more like cooler side of Luke warm. The noodle was like instant noodle. The broth oh the broth, ramen broth should be milky, filled with flavor but it was clear tasteless broth. And it was not the ramen hard boiled egg just normal hard boiled egg. I guess for 12 bucks i really paid for the 2 – 3 slices of cha shau which was decent nothing specia. Miso soup — for a good Japanese restaurant, miso soup should be good, the taste is good but again cooler side of Luke warm. Sushi set — mackare lead a little fishy, the rest tuna, some other white fish was ok but the sushi rice was held properly, was looosey goosey. The server! She was very slow, and somehow I think she leaf the food on the food counter for too long that’s why it was cold. She came to order and brought food over that’s all, no refill of tea and when we are done we waited for a while for the bill so we just walk to the counter and paid. Will I return? Not really. Maybe if I am working around the area and need a quick lunch spot I might but I would skipped the ramen and sushi. Maybe try the Katsu and bento tempura.

Excellent pork belly ramen dish. Sushi seems more authentic and not so Americanized. Spicy salmon roll is fresh and unusually good. Miso soup is flavorful. Wonderful service.

Disgusting food, even worse service. Breading on pork cutlet was soggy, flavorless. Server took 35 minutes to come back after taking credit card.

A few years ago around Christmas I came here with my siblings and we were privy to a large group of elderly Japanese ladies dining. After finishing their meal, one of the ladies whipped out an old flip phone and turned on some Christmas music. The ladies proceeded to sing Christmas carols — in Japanese. Ever since then my heart has been incredibly warm towards Fujiya so I’m a frequent customer. But the quality of the food has dramatically decreased since that afternoon a few years ago. I have tried many items and I don’t really have a favorite dish. I think the sashimi is good but it doesn’t take too much effort to make it good. Just buy good fish. And I think Fujiya does buy good fish. Sadly, I don’t think the dishes they actually cook taste very good. I like getting the luncheon for lovers since you get a lot of courses but most of the food is drenched in this heavily corn starched sweet sauce. It’s not good. The soup that comes with the meal is actually a weak broth with crunchy bits of tempura flour. A little weird and not good. The salad is ok but it’s not the best. I wish they used kewpie mayo sesame dressing but they have some other more tart dressing. The tonkatsu is very thin and way over fried. And it is also served with the same sweet sauce. The end of the meal is probably my favorite — cheapo Orange creamsicle ice cream with a cherry! It’s refreshing! I’ve also gotten the mochi ice cream here before. It’s pretty standard and can be gotten anywhere. Other dishes I have had — the soba is incredibly pricey for what it is. $ 8 for overly soggy soba is not cool Fujiya! I can make this dish much better at home under 5 mins for $ 2. I would recommend the takoyaki but it seems to have decreased in quality since I got it a few years ago. It’s not as crisply fried and too small. For good takoyaki– Nama Ramen is where it’s at! Shabu shabu and sukiyaki here are equally disappointing. The broth is too sweet and the tofu tastes very old. It had a weird, sour, fermented taste the second time I got it. The imperial garden lunch is quite impressive when it arrives but is actually not that good. The lunch portion is huge and decently priced though. Overall come for a cheap lunch if you’re in the area and craving sort-of-Japanese food. The bentos are a great deal although not the best tasting. The quantity and quality at dinner is just not worth it. My recommendation — walk or drive over to Yellowfish(literally a few mins away) where the menu is shorter but the food is infinitely better tasting.

Fujiya is one of those discreet, tucked-away restaurants, despite sitting right on Wurzbach just outside the Medical Center. Like its neighboring Yellowfish, Fujiya serves up some of the meanest sushi SA has to offer; however unlike Yellowfish, Fujiya is also a full-sized restaurant w/multiple dining areas, a full bar(s), and ten times more chillax ambiance. Tranquil is what comes to mind as you meander from the parking lot, through the Japanese-ish foyer, and to the hostess’ stand. What comes to mind next?(1) Cool, attentive waitstaff;(2) Truly great prices, particularly their specials;(3) DANGTASTYFOOD. All of the above is why patrons return time and again to Fujiya… enough so that the place has been around for nearly 40 years [if I heard my waiter correctly]. Now that, my friends, makes Fujiya one of the few Medical Center legends that have been around since SA’s not-so-exciting-then days. Much cred. Rating specifics(i.e. 1 – 5, low-high)… — Overall recommendation = 4.25 — Food taste and quality = 4.75 — Portion size = 4.5 — Price = 4.25 — Atmosphere = 3.75 — General service = 4.5 — Waitstaff = 4 — Location = 3.25

Located in area which has so much sushi restaurants. You won’t find any restaurant has nice atmosphere like here. However, the food and service isn’t that great. We ordered Fried soft shell crab, ramen noodle soup and sashimi set. Turned out the fried crab was great, but pretty small portion comparing the price of 7.50 $. My ramen noodle soup is warm, not hot like it’s supposed to be. The soup has too much raw onion and cabbage in it, and it doesn’t have specific flavor. If you want to have a real ramen noodle soup, I would recommend you go to Kimura. They’re better. The last food is a sashimi set of salmon, tuna, squid, red snapper, yellow tail, mackerel. We only love salmon, mackerel and yellow tail. The others fish don’t have good quality. Service turned out like disaster. The waiter got order and disappeared. We waited too long and finally have to come up to the cashier for the bill. Definitely first time and also last time. I mean high price but not worth it

There are a lot of good sushi places in town but not a one has the amazing service of Fujiya! You just cannot put a price on good service. Boon was an amazing waiter and had great recommendations as well as hooking us up with a delicious«surprise me» roll. If you are looking for a place that has it all you won’t be disappointed here and the price is very reasonable.

The rating is actually 3.5. I had bento box B for $ 12, and I got a lot of food, had to take home. The box contained a California roll, 2 shumai pieces, 4 tamagoyaki pieces, salad, and beef & vegetable stir-fry. The box comes with a bowl of rice and a miso soup. Beef & vegetable is good, but the California roll is not tightly packed. I picked up by chopsticks and it started falling apart. I got a lot of food for my lunch special, but the California roll is not impressive.

My Dad wanted to go to San Antonio for the day for his birthday. We left Austin early went to Mass and then late lunch. He wanted to come to Fujiya. They ate here a few months a go when my Mom had training for work. This place is super interesting. The space outside is so inconspicuous. When you walk in it’s like a make shift Japanese garden. Then you walk into the restaurant. It’s very casual and there’s tons of origami birds hanging from the ceiling. We were seated in a booth and our server cheerfully came to greet us and get our drink orders. We were all having a hard time deciding what to get. My Dad finally decided on a Bento Box, my mom Tempura and steamed fish and I decided on the Single Lunch for Lovers. This was an eight course meal(but really six) and had a little bit of everything. I couldn’t decide so I thought this would be a great option to try a lot of things. I was pretty stoked but it really wasn’t mind blowing. Everything was pretty flat and bland in my opinion. So here’s the play by play… First Course — Fujiya Soup Different from Miso soup and was pretty salty. There was wakame in the soup but I can’t remember what else was in it. There’s our first terrible sign I don’t even remember what was in the soup. Second Course — Egg Rolls These were probably the part of my whole meal. They were piping out and it had meat in it. I’m a total eggroll snob because I’m used the Filipino eggrolls the Lumpia. Who needs little stubby, fat fried rolls of veggies when you can have fried rolls of meat in a crispy wrapper! Third Course– Chicken Kushi and Tonkatsu(Pork Cutlet) Chicken Kushi was chicken on a skewer with some veggies I could really identify covered in a sauce. Chicken was tender but so bland. Even with the sauce it wasn’t really exciting. I love Tonkatsu but this was so disappointing. I know cutlets are suppose to be thin but this was super thin the breading seemed to take over. Super plain, no flavor and not as crispy as I anticipated. I had a sauce to dip but it didn’t help very much. Fourth Course — Sukiyaki This is strips of thinly sliced beef cooked with fresh oriental vegetables. I’ve never had this dish before so I don’t have anything to compare it to or have any expectations. This came out piping hot. The broth was on the sweeter side. Beef was tender and there was vegetables mixed in. I mostly at the broth with rice and ate some of the pieces of beef. Out of all the courses this was the one that probably had the most flavor. Fifth Course — Shrimp Tempura This was the most disappointing. I’ve never attempted tempura myself but I’ve always read and seen on TV shows that it takes a little bit of detail and finesse to get this right. Some parts of my shrimp and veggies were soggy. The breading was a little heavy and not light like tempura is suppose to be. Sixth Course — Orange Delight Dessert From what I could tell this was just a scoop of vanilla ice cream with an orange liqueur. Tasty but not very exciting. Our dining experience was nice and my parents and I had a good time. As much as my parents were talking about this place I was kind of bummed out that it wasn’t that great. I know there are much better Japanese places in San Antonio. Next time I’ll pick out the place to eat if my parents are in San Antonio again.

My absolute favorite sushi place in SA. Jun-ko(may have spelled it wrong), Piano and Ron are all great and super friendly! My favorites are the smoked squid & seaweed salad, the dice roll, salmon, eel, tuna and surf clam sushi pieces. Even my brother and sister-in-law who had never eaten sushi before loved this place(especially the salmon). Friendly staff, delicious food and great ambiance — this place has it all.

My mom and I went to Fujiya for lunch today and it was pretty good! The ambiance of the restaurant is really nice and the decorations are beautiful. We had a table by the window looking out at their backyard and the overall feel of the restaurant is really relaxing. I imagine that this would be a good place to have a business lunch or intimate date night. All of the staff were very polite and welcoming. I especially liked that our server took the time to explain the menu and answer our questions. We ended up sharing the luncheon for lovers — wow this comes with SOMUCH food! It includes soup, eggrolls, tonkatsu, chicken kushi, rice(your choice of fried or steamed), sukiyaki, shrimp and vegetable tempura, and dessert. My favorite was the tonkatsu. The soup was a little salty for my taste and the tempura has an interesting batter(there’s a lot of space between the vegetables/shrimp and the batter — you could easily just peel it off), but other than that we enjoyed it. I would like to come back and try their bento box or ramen.

I was so excited to experience this place but I was extremely disappointed. I ordered sake to drink, Takoyaki, ahi poke, and Chirashi. The only plate I enjoyed was the Takoyaki everything else was mediocre. Also the plates were extremely small and high priced. It was not worth it what so ever. So sad this didn’t meet my expectations. Will not be returning. I’d rather go right next door to Yellowfish!

So, I’ve been a loyal diner of Fujiya for over 15 years. In the past my meal would arrive plentiful and piping hot. More recently, the prices have exceeded the quality and quantity of my favorite Japanese restaurant. Check out my most recent visit and you will notice that the size of the fish is approximately 1⁄3 of what it used to be. :( Also, the authentic soup spoons have been replaced with standard stainless steel flatware. The miso soup was not hot and included one small piece of tofu and was mostly broth. The restaurant is never more than half occupied and even the regulars are finding better«sushi spots» in the city. I hope that Fujiya reconsiders the quality of their food and makes some essential changes. I would love to keep this place on my frequent dining list.

Really good soup and meals. I highly recommend Fujiya Soup and Fujiya BBQ. They also have the best veggie tempura. The setting is very traditional.

I’ve enjoyed each visit to Fujiya. The couples dinners are a great deal, and very filling, but I can’t recommend the Katsu Chicken enough. It is amazing. Wonderful curries as well.
