I picked up a gluten free carrot cake for my celiac husband this weekend. It was fabulous! Didn’t make him sick and it was DELICIOUS! It was moist, fresh, and decorated SO cute! I wish I had ordered a bigger size because I also picked up some ice cream cakes for all the gluten eating folks we had over and everyone dove right into the carrot cake… not hardly enough left over for me! SO tasty! Also, had their peanut butter bars purchased from whole foods in Park City where we live… amazing! So good! I don’t try to avoid gluten, especially with baked goods but I go out of my way to hunt down city cakes goodies whenever I can because they are wonderful! Lastly, my husband is newly diagnosed celiac and is so wary of everything he eats because he hasn’t felt good in so long. We knew very little before the diagnosis and are both still learning to read labels and watch for cross-contamination… however after slowly trying some different desserts and now this cake, he feels totally at ease with city cakes because he feels great after he eats it… feeling safe to eat great baked goods is a wonderful feeling!

City Cakes is perfect if you’re vegan and perfect if you aren’t. Cupcakes and baked goods — no matter who you are, or what dietary needs you lean towards, who can say no to those?! City cakes has a nice selection of all sorts of baked goods — all vegan, and others sitting on the fence between gluten free or not — there’s a wide selection of both. Especially if you’re not vegan, it’s hard to imagine consuming baked goods without eggs or butter to help hold it all together, but these guys know what they are doing, and they put together a damn decent spread of treats. Anytime I’ve gone in, I’ve gravitated towards getting the cupcakes. I really should branch out and try other goods or lunch/dinner items, but the cupcakes are always so enticing, and really never disappoint. My most recent stop in included a marble cupcake and a banana cupcake(I shared half of both with a friend). The marble one is always my go-to, and I decided I needed to dabble around other cupcakes — so I decided on the banana(It was really pretty). The banana one was good, but the flavor of banana barely made it through. It tasted more like a plain cupcake with a tiny smidgen of added flavor. The promise I’ve made to myself now is to try something other than a cupcake… but it’s so hard to decide when you are staring into a case of beautiful, vegan goodies. And to add on top of that, the prices aren’t bad at all. When I imagine vegan, I imagine expensive and very small items of food. City Cakes will not disappoint you here. My most recent visit also included my two friends getting Chai teas. The teas were… absolutely lackluster, to say the least. They tasted like a Celestial Seasonings Chai tea bag steamed in some soy milk. Which is great if that’s how you want it, but when I think Chai, I think of something handcrafted, with a little bit of time and love put into it. The Chai is NOT recommended if you stop in here… you’ll be paying a higher price for a subpar beverage. From my experience… come in for the goods, not the drinks. A nice addition to City Cakes is their little sitting area that will allow you to grab a snack and comfortably study for a couple of hours, or relax with a few friends. I would suggest studying here… but I personally have never done it, as I believe it would be hazardous to my health. I’d spend most of my time by the display cases, trying all sorts of brownies, cookies and muffins, and leaving at closing with a sugared out-belly and absolutely no studying done.

Got a cake for a vegan coworker and was very pleasantly surprised by the flavor and quality. They were great to work with. Seriously couldn’t believe that there was no butter or milk in the cake. The buttercream frosting was delicious. Also, on a cheaper note their chocolate dipped peanut butter cookie is to die for!
