I love Mud Coffee! It’s a really cozy place with a great atmosphere to just hang out and read, troll Facebook, get some work done, meet with friends, or whatever. It’s in a great location, has a super friendly staff – especially the owner Danny, and fantastic coffee. They serve up amazing café mochas, caramel lattes and café Americanos. Yummy coffee, superb environment. Can’t say enough good things!

This is place is easily one of my favorite spots. Its quality without pretension. The guy who holds down the fort is always courteous and friendly and just– it’s refreshing. I only wish I still lived in the neighborhood so I could go more often!

I come here a lot during my shift breaks. My lattes are always delicious and the service is always A+! It’s the perfect place to hang out and people watch and/or read. Super laid back and not at all hipster!

I have not been here in a while and was surprised to see a new name. The barista was super friendly and helpful. I love the lattes here — and that has not changed. I got a yummy berry scone and had a perfect afternoon pick me up. There were photos from Lisbon on the wall — great display. Nice to see a local showcasing their stuff. This spot is close to my office and you can be sure I’ll be returning!

Cool coffeeshop in the Hollywood district. A friend and i came here to work on a laptop and paint watercolor. We were surprised when it closed at 4pm!

Stopped in for a quick coffee and snack. Staff was super friendly. Quiet little place. Allows dogs, outside for sure. Has dog treats inside.

The barista here is really attentive. He handled multiple orders with swift finesse… I was delighted to discover my bev was trimmed with one of those latte art leaves too. #fancy I wish my mocha was a bit more hot & steamy though, but that won’t preclude my return. As for the café layout, it’s spacious and quiet enough that you could get hit the books/edit your Unilocal reviews(wink).

Stopped in for a quick iced latte during lunch and was pleasantly surprised. This is a nice convenient spot, quiet enough to hit he books, and the service was great. I believe they were serving Trailhead Roasting’s Santa Gema Microlot from Nicaragua which I thought tasted good despite prior reviewers notes that it lacks depth and flavor. All in all I would recommend this for anyone, and I will definitely be back to give some other drinks a chance.

I had been a regular patron of Aliviar since it opened on NE42nd Ave, visiting almost every day for many years. While I think some of the changes that the new management(Mud Coffee) have made are an improvement, such as serving Loretta Jean’s pastries, I am very disappointed about their choice to serve Trailhead coffee. Personally, I think it lacks depth and flavor. The last couple times I visited Mud Coffee, I had to double-check my mug to make sure it was actually an Americano I was drinking, because I mistook it for water. I used to consider Aliviar my «Cheers» of Portland, but sadly, I probably wont be back unless they someday serve a different brand of coffee. The Batdorf & Bronson they used to make was tasty. I guess you can’t please everyone, and if folks are happy with the new coffee at Mud, then it’s only my loss. I’ve transitioned to getting my morning Americano at New Seasons Market, where they serve a delicious Stumptown Hairbender at a lower price.

Very Friendly costumer service! ! A very simple coffee shop next to a historical theater. Had a cup of cappuccino! Excellent in taste. I very much enjoyed conversation with the Barista.

Best cup of coffee I have had in a long time. Got a large vanilla latte and it was the perfect temperature. The atmosphere is very Portland to me and I like that. Casual setting with different chairs and couches. I will be back.

needed to have a central location for my coworker to pick me up and chose this place due to the previous reviews and the proximity to the Max. easy walk over to Sandy blvd even in the typical Portland fall weather(rain). the coffee shop has a few small tables and there seemed to be a number of regulars who came in and chatted with the barista. the coffee was great! went with a latte and was impressed. good flavor and reasonably priced. would totally come back again when in the neighborhood. parking might be a pain for some but as long as you are able bodied and can walk a bit, there were spots in the neighborhood.

I planned a small meeting here with a client, knowing I would be seeing a movie later at the Hollywood Theater next door. Parking was a little tough, but that is because I knew I would be in the area for several hours. If I was just stopping by, there were plenty of 2 hour parking spots available very close by. Once arriving, I realized I had forgotten my phone in my car, so that was a good ten minute walk there and back. I had my laptop and a backpack, and the barista kindly offered to put my things behind the counter to keep them safe while I hoofed it to the car and back. This was my first visit and his willingness to help me was awesome. I wish I knew his name, but I was neglectful in not asking. I came back and ordered a latte and it was really, really tasty. I got an iced one, as it was a summer, warm day, but the taste of the coffee still shone through. I worked at Peet’s for over a year and so I know how to brew a good pull, his technique was clean and detailed, and the result was a special treat. I noticed hard boiled eggs on the menu for a buck, and somehow could not resist this. I wanted to… I don’t know, support random weird food menu options, and there were several of them in the fridge. It was good! He wasn’t even sure what to do with it, heheh, I opted for a plate to crack it on. My only«ding» was the lack of AC. I know that in Portland we only need AC maybe two weeks out of the year, I don’t have it in my house, even, and I had just walked to and fro a lot from my car, but I was sweaty as as result and to collapse in a heap in place with cooler air, or at least better circulating air, would have been great. So, even a small fan somewhere would have helped out with that. Comfortable, yummy coffee, and it looked like they had tasty baked goods as well. And hardboiled eggs! I am really glad to have found the spot, and will be back when I need wifi, great coffee and a place to meet and relax for an afternoon.

Knowledgable baristas! I really love their wide array of offerings. And whenever I come here, the baristas are really friendly and engaging. It seems to be a place that attracts a lot of regulars. It’s a small building, but that makes for a cozy area to work!

This place is great! My only complaint is that they are a trendy hipster type place that serves mostly vegan options. That said the coffee I had was wonderful! The service was quick and the staff friendly. The inside is aesthetically pleasing and cozy. It does have a nice local feel to it. All in all an excellent coffee and tea house. I suppose the vegans need a place to go anyhow. ;)

I can’t stop thinking about the espresso I had here. It was full-bodied and so delicious. The way an espresso should be. Roasty, rich, full of flavor, had a texture that was delightfully syrupy and grainy. Loved every second of it. UPDATE4÷8÷2015: Word has reached me that this place has changed, and is now called MUD instead of Aliviar, and they use different coffee beans now, and are under different management, so my above review is no longer technically valid. I’ll have to visit the new place and update my review next time I can get to Portland.

Aliviar makes awesome coffee, no two ways about it, beats every other coffee shop in Hollywood hands down. I also love me some Stumptown for espresso drinks, and Aliviar is on the same level of deliciousness. My latte this morning was ever so smooth despite having 3 shots of espresso in it. Even the presentation is top notch. Also, HUGE thanks to Aliviar on the hours, open at 7AM, and close at 8PM, an hour after Starbucks, so I don’t have to go there for early evening coffee. Yes, I drink coffee after 6PM, because sometimes, I am about to fall on my face, and the coffee can help delay that a few hours. Let’s say I rounded up on the stars, as there are two negatives I would be remiss if I did not mention. First, my triple latte exceeded $ 5 with a 15% tip. That is on the high side for a latte with three shots, but you get what you pay for. Second, there is no parking close, and the no parking apartment next door is going to make the parking issue even worse. I would recommend somewhere to park, but there isn’t anywhere near here beside street parking.

Tried a cappuccino my first time here(which can be a bit of a gamble)… it was truly excellent. Perfect microfoam, really smooth balance — the Batdorf and Bronson espresso blend is a bean blend that isn’t the most complex out there, but is delightfully smooth and sweet in milk. Americanos are priced the same as Espressos, Machiattos and Capps ~a quarter more as you step up in milk content. Really friendly people working, some good tables with outlets to work at, and some well priced snacks. The cranberry/walnut oatmeal was pretty tasty!

Since relocating next door to the classic Hollywood Theater — I have been a loyaly customer ever since. Sure there is a Starbucks around the corner but as many peeps know — I don’t do Starbucks. The service is chill and super friendly. The people that work in the café always know what I want when I walk in the door — a 16 oz. Americano. I come in with a big smile just before I usually start my volunteer shift at the theater. The coffee they use is never bitter and can keep me awake when I need it the most. Even the drip coffee will make most customers happy with the balance of aroma and flavor. The atmosphere is very laid back with music in the background that is never distracting. With the inclusion of Ninkasi beer and select wine — there is something for everyone. The soup is made in house and will be looking forward to it once winter hits. I sometimes will get their big cookies and the chocolate oatmeal is a winner for me. The small and decadent desserts look appealing. I am glad to see the café with patrons outside mingling amongst themselves when the weather is pleasant. The café does have free wi-fi and there is hardly a wait. One time I barely made it before the café closed and they were more than happy to make my usual drink. I even gotten friends converted to come here instead of that gloopy green logo café. Relocating next to the Hollywood Theater has definitely benefited the café and I hope it continues to succeed!
