I needed some bakery boxes for cupcakes, and I was looking for liners of a specific color, that sort of thing. They didn’t have the chic dark brown cupcake wrappers that are so in style right now, so I had to get black. That was a downer, but I will survive. They have every size bakery box you could need, and the little cupcake inserts as well. They didn’t really have a selection of styles, pretty much all white with the kraft brown interior, or the little plastic ones you see at the grocery store. They are fine for what I needed at the time, but I would have happily paid more for more upscale boxes. I ended up grabbing some new flavorings and other neat things as well, and checked out all of the candy making supplies for fun. Their overall array of products is pretty large and chances are they have what you need for making sweets, but they may not have a ton of options for each item. I won’t try to sugar coat it, this store needs a serious facelift. It is old and dingy feeling, and the way the store is organized just doesn’t make you feel good. Bad feng shui. It really makes you want to get in, get what you need, and get out. But on the bright side, the service is great.

Damn these people! I went in to buy Hi Ratio shortening for Buttercream frosting. It is online for 8.99−9.99, same brand, same amount. I should give these people one star. But I’m giving them two cause their molds kick my ass, and so do their cookie cutters. I saw a gun cookie cutter. I’d like to have it, but I think I’m ordering it online, instead of going to this place again. I called first to see if they had hi ratio shortening, which she said she did. I guess I should’ve asked how much, and brand. The CK brand is fine with me, I’ve no qualms about it. The thing is, it is priced gouged in this shop, for 13.99. 13.99 for 3 lbs, which will last through one or maybe 2 cakes. Every website I’ve checked has it for 8.99−10.99. I bought it cause I’m busy and needed it, and I don’t have time to wait for an online order. It’s not something you buy in a grocery store. I guess I should’ve called other places, to see if they had Sweetex, and I will do that, and find out how much. If it were Sweetex, I’d accept the price and go on. The truth is, they buy the CK in bulk, and scoop it into the 3 lb tubs, and price gouge it. The customer service wasn’t as good either. Again,(3:00), she was sitting in the break room in the back of the store. Not too happy about this place. I doubt this would occur in the Lenexa store.

This shop looks a bit tired, but it has a good selection of supplies for baking and candy making and cake decorating. There were lots of cookie cutters, shaped cake pans, baking chocolates, prepared colored frostings, pastry tube decorating tips, colored sugars, nonpareils and edible glitter, extracts, fondant, etc. They’re in the strip mall on the southeast side of Antioch and 95th that’s seen some better days. There used to be a Mar-Beck appliance place and some other shops that have closed, but the Sweet Supply Shoppe is soldiering on. Check them out if you need baking supplies! Update 2⁄2011: The strip mall where this shop was located is being demolished for redevelopment. The shop has moved to a new location at the SW corner of College and Antioch.

I was on a mission, of the cinnamon candy variety. While in hot pursuit of the necessary tools to produce the aforementioned sweet treats, I sought out a supplier… The Sweet Shoppe. The shop is in a rather run down area, but that was the closest dealer to Smithville(according to Unilocal. Were else would one look?). Not all that close, either, as you may have already noted. The parking lot is an obstacle course, waiting for a car. Never fear. Undaunted, I carry on. Once inside, my reconnaissance provided every supply on my list. If you are a mold freak… that is of the plastic variety, this would be the mother load. They line the walls with them. Must be cheaper than wallpaper. There is a wide range of cake pans, cake decorating equipment, and pre-made cake decorations(made from icing), sprinkles, dragees, etc. The owner will be available for questions, but she answers them like your Mother. Informative, but a tad judgmental. I purchased my provisions, plus a really groovy doughnut cutter! No I don’t need a doughnut cutter to make cinnamon candy, but I will when I move on to my next assignment. Doughnuts. I wonder, what tools I will need to produce fluffy doughnuts? Well I have my thermometer and groovy doughnut cutter… I’m half way there, thanks to the Sweet Supply Shoppe.
