Inexpensive hangover food. What more could you want? And kudos to the lady at the checkout. It’s really hard to make me smile before I’ve had coffee.

This is a cozy spot with friendly service. The breakfast tacos were good. The Gravy Train, on the other hand, was terrible. The biscuits were very dense and sweet, like a cake. The sausage gravy that smothered them was stodgy and thick, like glue, making the combination uneatable. Thankfully, the eggs and bacon were on a separate plate, and were fine. Steer away from the Gravy Train!

Strolling through banks St. For a brunch meal and this place seemed nice without much wait, unfortunately it wasn’t a good experience. My friend and I were having this as a breakfast before we leave NOLA, so we were looking for somewhere to quickly eat and go. Getting to order didn’t take too long, and we took a seat in the corner. However, once there, it took about 10 minutes to reheat a andouille cheesecake, then another half hour for our breakfast of sausage and gravy and«pancrepes» to arrive. We were fairly annoyed at that point but we finally got our meal. I liked the andouille cheesecake, it is a sharp cheese but mellowed out by the rest of the ingredients. The pancreas were just thin pancakes nothing special. Rest of the breakfast foods were also basic. The bad was the biscuits and gravy. The gravy was… Dry… And biscuits were… Really dry. A gloppy desert. Maybe tone down the use of flour. We promptly left after we devoured our meal as we had to get to the airport.

I love this place. Not in the busy French Quarters but every bit as unique and better food. Cinnamon French Toast was great. They asked my name when I arrived then came by my table a couple of times and called me by name… A small gesture that meant a lot. A couple of cons: there are only 7 tables inside and there’s nowhere for customers placing to go orders to wait do they end up taking some of they previous few tables; the coffee is fantastic but they only have whole milk for it, no creamer or half n half.

This was a rare find told to us by our AirBNB hosts. It is a quaint little spot on Banks Street that you might miss, if you don’t watch for it. While it might be small on size, it is huge on taste. I had the Grits Bowl with eggs, which was absolutely amazing — you will definitely not leave hungry after having it. We split a Sausage Andouille«Cheesecake»(quiche-basically), which was one of the best things that I have ever eaten! If I were in a ‘last meal’ kind of situation, this item would be on my list of ‘last things to eat’. We love trying local places and Wakin’ Bakin’ did not disappoint.

We’ve ate here twice & the menu is not as big & the entrees are pretty basic. They do brunch so, when I say the menu isn’t so big, it’s quite limited to eggs and bacon.

Wakin’ Bakin’ is everything I could hope for as an out-of-towner! Great food, fair priced in a cozy neighborhood setting. Substitutions are no problem-every cheerful member of the crew aimed to please. Best grits I’ve had, true artistry disguised as simple, scratch baking! Loved it, thanks all!

The food at Wakin’ Bakin’ is delicious, and having it brought right to my door by their friendly drivers makes Wakin’ Bakin’ a WIN-WIN spot for breakfast or brunch! I recommend the breakfast bowls, which I usually get with grits and eggs over easy. The Gravy Train is also one of my indulgences from time to time when two homemade biscuits swimming in a sweet, white gravy is just what the hangover doctor ordered. The staff are always exceptionally friendly both on the phone and upon delivery, which is usually reliably quick(30 – 45 mins during peak hours). Their prices are exceptionally reasonable, AND, as if all that weren’t enough, some of the best lookin’ fellas in Mid-City happen to work there, so there’s the eye candy a la cart at no extra charge(Tip those hardworkin’ waiters & drivers, y’all!!) I’ll be calling them now to place an order, since I’m good and salivate-y from thinking about all that tasty Southern goodness fixin’ to head down to Tummy Town.

Local casual, off the beaten path. Not a bad meal, although the eggs were cold and grits a bit runny, over all 3 stars, was disappointed on this trip…

Good place although the help can be surley However I guess they think this is part of the charm, although I did not. The Coffee is, nothing spectactular. The breakfasts are good, good, but not spectaular. Overall, a good solid c-average. For a A+ Meal, go across to Biscuits and Buns on Banks. Now, THAT is a restaurant that really knows how to sling some AWESOME breakfast fare.

Great inexpensive place to eat. Breakfast most excellent. Basic but done with great pride. Everything is scratched made. Biscuits and gravy tasty.(Needs more sausage) The over easy eggs were perfect. A sign of a very good chef. Go enjoy I WILL be back to try lunch. Enjoy it People very busy and customer oriented

Had a box’d breakfast — eggs, bacon, biscuit, and fruit. It was what it was. Nothing extraordinary, but satisfying. Price was good, but was certainly crowded and hot. Don’t really have good A/C in the building, which is kinda miserable in July. But good enough when I don’t wanna make my own breakfast.

Okay so I absolutely LOVE pancakes and I have this thing where I will search for a good pancake place in the city to satisfy my pancake craving. Unfortunately, I have not found that pancake go to in this place. So I ordered the pancrepes and pork. So pancrepes are thicker than crepes but lighter than pancakes. What I got was just really light pancakes in my opinion. I wasn’t a big fan of the fact that the syrup I got for three pancakes was like the size of the to go condiments container that you get at restaurants. The eggs were supposed to be cooked over hard but I’m not really sure what kind of egg they used because the texture was a little unsettling and there was nothing hard about these eggs. I would have to say the best thing about the whole meal was the sausage very yummy(and the only only thing I took to go with me)! The atmosphere was interesting, not really a big spot it’s really setup for you and another person. I did love the Jazz effect that they had going throughout the place. Everything is kind of setup up as a get yourself type thing no actual waitstaff. All in all it was different but I don’t see myself making another appearance, I guess I am back on the hunt for a melt in your mouth pancake…

I wanted to try a new restaurant spot out, but didn’t want to do an all out brunch. Wakin’ Bakin’ delivers… well yeah, they deliver, but we dined in! This is your no fuss breakfast place when you’re too lazy to make your own breakfast at home… which is basically every morning for me. You order at the counter, and they bring the food to wherever you’re sitting, even if you’re outside enjoying a beautiful day. Make sure to grab your silverware, napkins, condiments, and bring them to where you’re at. The water surprisingly had a fresh cucumber taste to it instead of the usual tap water taste you get when you just order a regular water. Love that! The boyfriend and I both ordered the Queso Burrito with hashbrowns, bacon and avocado bringing a $ 5 burrito to about $ 8.75 with the add-ons; still affordable to me. It comes with a small side of sour cream and salsa(I could always do with more salsa), but when all is said and done, it was just the right amount of food to kick off my morning. I didn’t see any dishes that necessarily scream New Orleans, or are super fancy, but if you want a breakfast done right, quick, and simple… this is your butter and jam.

Good spot for affordable simple dishes. I was delighted with their menu ideas and concept. Buuutt don’t serve a product unless it is on point. My English muffin was too dense and served burnt. This is such a casual place that you can feel comfortable coming in after a fun night. Laid back spot. 2nd time and it hit the spot! Home fries are hashbrowns.

The Magazine-Oak-Freret-Bywater New Orleans breakfast axis takes another twist on Banks Street.(Nothing like a war alliance analogy to work up an appetite, no?) Wakin’ Bakin’ is tucked into the remote end of Banks, past Jesuit in a quiet pocket of Mid CIty bounded solidly by the Pontchartrain Expressway and Tulane Avenue. It’s a small place with about six tables inside and four or so more on a broad sidewalk outside. Orders are taken above a small display case with fresh breads, muffins, and rolls baked in the shop. A popular choice is «monkey bread», a bun with a light layer of sweet icing. The menu offers brunch on one side, sandwiches on the other. The«Big John» biscuit and sausage must have been named for a person and not the portion size. It’s about the same size as the 99 cent fast food drive-thru specials, just a few times more expensive, and arguably a few times more better. The biscuit is obviously fresh with a hearty grain and flaky texture, not an easy combination to pull off. Add an egg and a side both at small extra cost) and it becomes a decent meal. The egg ordered over-easy was perfectly cooked, important when you’re expecting yolk as a sauce for the biscuit. The delicious biscuit was a bit small, requiring this diner to ration egg and sausage for each bite. The side of grits I recommend highly, as they were among the creamiest and smoothest I’ve ever had with barely a hint of hominy«grit» in the texture. For those new to grits(and, based on experiences with in-laws, such people exist), these grits might actually be a good starting place for those who consider the stuff disgusting. Coffee drinkers are handed a mug and set loose on the pump pot. That is one of two acceptable ways to serve coffee at a breakfast joint(the other being the attentive roving server hovering nearby with a carafe, asking«More?). A boutique coffee roaster provides the beans, so expect to pull a robust, satisfying cup. And then another. And another… Long waits to get in, ordered, and seated are understandable and forgivable – after all, a line means the experience is worth the wait. Once an order has been accepted and a seat taken at a table(here, usually still graced with the previous party’s dirty dishes), the restaurateur owns the wait. It’s tolerable for someone with no particular place to go who’s now enjoying his fourth cup of coffee, but not so much for a mom transformed by hunger from human to ursine and her six year old cub – er, child. There’s a small kitchen with two or three people working hard, and lots of loud shouting of orders, but progress was slow. In another city, I’d ding the joint a star, but as one who grew up here, well… I’ll just refill my coffee one mo’ time and tell Mom and child«It’ll be here any minute.»

I’m torn over this breakfast restaurant. Unilocalers are raving, but I just don’t see what the fuss is about. The breakfast I had here was pretty awful. I ordered«the big John» it’s a breakfast sandwich with egg, sausage and cheese on a biscuit. The biscuit was very dense and gritty and tasted like cardboard. The sausage was not much better and did not have much flavor. Maybe I just ordered the wrong breakfast item. The grits on the other hand were creamy and delicious! Also, the service was pretty good although I did happen to notice the clerk tell the others who left«have a nice day, goodbye» when I left there was a strange silence. I already notice things like that, but when there are very few people in the restaurant and I see them make a point to tell others have a nice day, and then it’s my turn… Silence descends… Weird! How come they don’t want me to have a nice day! LOL
