So disappointed in this place. Huevos Rancheros is one of my lifes greatest joys. When it’s actually Huevos Rancheros. We went in midweek, close to closing time but not cutting it too short so we weren’t obnoxious. We ordered the blue jay special and the rancheros. The blue jay special was passable, and for five bucks I can’t really complain. My big gripes are with the coffee– which I like strong and black, but not burned and sludgy, and the can of cold black beans and scrambled eggs passing as my favorite breakfast dish. So gross. No cheese, «salsa» was actually canned stewed tomatoes. Unacceptable. Its too close to where I live for me not to try again but I have a feeling we will be sticking to Ruby Slipper for breakfast in that neighborhood.

This is a cute little Mid-City breakfast shop on the«Banks Street Corridor,» as I like to call it, because I think Banks St. is well on its way to becoming the next New Freret(which was the next Oak Street, but bootstrapped, without a main street grant). There are several businesses I adore on this little stretch of Banks Street, including Epic Mac & Cheese Co., Lazaro’s and Banks Street Bar. Huevos rounds out the group nicely. Now you’ve got breakfast/coffee, places to have lunch/dinner, then a bar for live music and drinking. Man. I kind of wish I lived on Banks Street. The reason I was first drawn to Huevos was Elise R’s quicktip mentioning coconut iced coffee. I love coconut. Especially if it’s caffienated. You don’t often come across coconut iced coffee, so I was slightly sad to discover they don’t have it every day. Rather, the flavor changes from day to day. Not sure if there’s a regular rotation or if they just surprise you. I’m kind of hoping, say, Monday is Coconut Coffee day, so I can plan my week around this, but who knows. They sell doughnuts from the Buttermilk Drop, but did not actually have buttermilk drops; another bit of confusion on my part that left me slightly disappointed. But the bright, cheery vibe of the place tempered this slight disappointment, leaving me optimistic about the future. It was my first time here, and I’m looking forward to my next visit! Note about the food: I ordered the huevos rancheros or something like that. Black beans with two eggs(scrambled) and some mini tortilla looking things. The food was okay. I’ve heard that they do this particular dish very well, so my conclusion is that I simply am not a fan of whatever it was that I ordered. As such, I won’t be doing that again. Next time, I’m definitely getting the Bluebird Special. It’s hidden all the way down at the bottom of the menu. Since I started at the very top, maybe I should work my way all the way down. Nah. I’m not a foodie. Nor do I eat meat. This whimsical experiment is doomed to failure. Cute place. Great ‘hood. Go check them out. Maybe I’ll see you there! Let me know if you figure out when I can get coconut iced coffee. Okay, last note. About the coffee. It was really really good. Way better than PJ’s iced hazelnut coffee, so as far as straight up flavored iced coffee goes, Huevos has PJ’s beat.(PJ’s makes the best iced mochas on the planet, so regardless of your personal feelings about PJ’s vs. CC’s vs. Starbucks, coming from me the comparison is highly favorable. Well done, Huevos. Well done.)

Nice, casual little brekkie joint in Mid City. I’ve always loved random restaurants in the middle of neighborhoods like this one. Places like these truly strengthen the community around you and makes life a little less hectic. Everything on the menu is delicious and moderately priced, but most of the time I wind up just getting the basic $ 5 eggs, bacon and toast breakfast. And the staff couldn’t be more flexible with orders. If you need something specific done to your order, they always understand and give you options. The staff and the clientele are really what sells this place. It’s prefect for a lazy day outside eating eggs and reading.

The fact that it was really busy on a Sunday morning is usually a good sign. However, the fruit flies swarming around the outside plates should have been a warning sign for the things that threw me off. My breakfast sandwhich was super bland– Eggs(nothing special), Swiss(find, but made the sloppy sandwich sloppier), Ham(I’ve eaten this type of breakfast ham at waffle house a million times), Chibata(stale, not toasted). They were«out of ice»…“out of silverware”. We had to wipe down our own because what they brought to the table had remnants of other food. Save your $ 10 for Ruby Slipper. Just simply not worth it with other good spots right around the corner.

Huevos is such a cute little breakfast spot. My husband and I came here for a mid week breakfast and it was delicious. I had the huevos rancheros and he had the Blue Jay special I liked my dish, but his tortilla was the best and came with a small coffee. For $ 5 I thought that was a decent deal. It really filled him up too. I will definitely be ordering the special for our next trip. The inside is small and more on the self service side. I would imagine that it is probably difficult to get a table on a busy weekend morning, but for a late weekday morning it was cozy rather than cramped with just a couple other people inside. So, if paying a lot would keep you from this breakfast place I would definitely recommend just giving the special a try. I find this to be an excellent breakfast option in the mid city area and I’m sure that I’ll be going back.

$ 10 for breakfast and coffee is a little steep for me, but it beats going to IHOP or Denny’s. The food is tex-mex, and if that’s not your style(it’s not mine) they do have breakfast options that aren’t tex-mex. I like salsa, just not on my eggs. The Southern Breakfast is the classic 2 eggs, choice of bacon/ham/sausage, grits or hashbrowns and toast. I visited about 9am on a Saturday, it wasn’t crowded when we arrived, but filled up while we were eating. You order at the counter, pick a seat, and they bring it out to you. Coffee is also self-serve. I think you have to bus your own table, I didn’t see anyone come out to clear tables, but there was a dish bin against the wall– so I put 2 and 2 together. For the price you pay, I would have expected table service, but at the same time, it was kind of nice to enjoy a meal without interruptions and you can leave when your done instead of waiting for the check. So overall: It’s not cheap, located in a mainly residential neighborhood in MidCity, and has a cozy, laid-back, and eclectic feel.

Huevos is a really great breakfast spot, which is important since Mid-City is seriously lacking in breakfast restaurants! I stopped by Huevos many times last fall during breaks between work and school. It is a really cozy, comfortable place to eat, and it’s not awkward to eat by yourself there at all. The cashiers and kitchen staff are very friendly, and your food comes out it no time. The tables always have little vases with fresh flowers, and it’s a great place to sit outside on a nice day. I think my favorite here is the Blue Jay special. It always comes out PIPING hot, with delicious chorizo made next door at the Crescent Pie & Sausage Company(the restaurants are run by the same owners). The charred tomato salsa is delicious, and combined with the chorizo, makes for a pleasantly smoky-flavored breakfast experience. The coffee is surprisingly good for your ordinary drip coffee. I also really enjoyed the huevos con tamal. Eggs on top of pork-filled tamales? Why didn’t I think of that! Mmm… The traditional southern breakfast is also great. The only things I’ve had here that I didn’t enjoy too much are the bacon and the bread for the breakfast sandwich. The bacon was SO smoky, I felt like I was crunching on solidified smoke(though my friend thinks that’s wonderful), and the ciabatta doesn’t have the chewiness found in real ciabatta. It was more crumbly like sandwich bread. Overall, I enjoy Huevos. I enjoy the simplicity of the menu, and I enjoy the atmosphere. I really MUST object to the«Hipster» ambience mentioned above in the Unilocal description. So a few Unilocalers saw some tattooed 20-somethings and automatically cried«hipster»? This just doesn’t make any sense to me, especially since you see 60– and 70-year-olds from the neighborhood reading the paper and drinking coffee outside. And I also must object to the Unilocaler below who described the location as «shady.» There’s nothing shady about a restaurant on Banks St. in Mid-City right next to Jesuit High.

Shady location but great breakfast! I got the chorizo, egg, and swiss cheese sandwich on a ciabatta roll. My bf got the BlueJay special. Both were amazing and unique. Plan on getting the tamales next time. The staff was nice and jammed reggae all morning. Perfect place to relax before a long day of Mardi Gras parades!

Great little breakfast joint that I hit at least once a week. Usually get in and get out just in time for class. The morning bluejay special for $ 5 is a deal. Some coffee and a bite to eat at that price is pretty hard to beat. Definitely go back and will bring some friends!

Finally got around to trying this place out and it wasn’t too bad. This is where I wish I could give it a half star! Really should be 3.5 stars! My breakfast date and I got there just after 7am, specifically to avoid the breakfast/hangover crowd. Cute spot with a neighborhood vibe, I ordered the breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, chorizo and cheddar cheese with hash browns and a side of bacon, washed down with pineapple lemonade. It was good and filling with the chorizo and hash browns being my personal favorites. My friend had the veggie omelette but there was something gritty in her omelette that ruined it for her(I took a couple bites and could taste it in her dish). Mine had none of that; maybe veggies didn’t get dirt washed off properly? Some of the other menu items looked pretty tasty so I’m sure I’ll be be back to try them…

I have to be honest: If Huevos weren’t just a few blocks from my house, I probably wouldn’t go there often, if at all. The food is solid, but not spectacular. I do really enjoy the Blue Jay Special. It’s my favorite thing on the menu. The tortillas there are so delicious, and their charred salsa gives it a special little kick. I also think it’s the perfect amount of food, which is rare because usually breakfast entrees are far too large for me to finish. Definitely a good value. The breakfast sandwich is also really good. I had the biscuits with chorizo gravy this morning and it was OK, but definitely not my favorite. The gravy was pretty bland and you could tell that the biscuits weren’t all that fresh. Most of the Mexican-style offerings are not super, but not bad. All in all, it’s a great place to have in the neighborhood and a really nice spot to read the Sunday paper and enjoy some coffee, but when I stray from my two favorites on the menu I’m generally disappointed in my order.

This place is pricey for breakfast. We went for the Blue Jay(Jesuit) special because well, I couldn’t see spending $ 8 for a breakfast sandwich, sorry. It’s a self service place so you really are just paying $ 8 for a breakfast sandwich. The Blue Jay Special is $ 5 and it’s a tortilla filled(not stuffed) with their homemade sausage, egg, and cheese, it came with an orange slice and a small coffee and salsa on the side. It was good don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a big portion at all though, again I think it’s a bit pricey for the offering and the fact that it’s not a full service place. The 2 eggs, bacon, and grits or toast is almost $ 8 too. Oh and it’s CASHONLY! A lot to ask for a small mid city breakfast spot. There was only one other couple in the place while we were there, it’s small inside but you can sit down to eat.

I finally visited this place and was very impressed! It’s mostly latin style sandwhiches and eggs. They also have some fantastic donuts on hand. The café spills out onto the sidewalk where the best seating can be had. I strongly encourage you to get the blue bird special or other special breakfast plate.

Huevos is a wonderful casual neighborhood breakfast place. I love the chalkboard menu and the eclectic collection of coffee cups and plates. Huevos attracts a very diverse clientele. Huevos is small and can be very crowded. I have heard complaints about waiting for a table, but so far I’ve been lucky. Today when I arrived around 11:45, all of the outdoor tables were occupied but most of the tables inside were empty. By 12:30, the restaurant was at full capacity. Every time I go to Huevos, I order the Blue Jay Special, a breakfast burrito and coffee for $ 5, and a side order of grits. Huevos makes a great breakfast burrito with eggs, chorizo, and charred tomato salsa. I judge places on their grits and Huevos does them right– flavorful and creamy. This breakfast is the perfect amount of food and a great value. Huevos also serves a variety of baked goods. The rosemary cheddar biscuits and the mini cinnamon rolls looked really good. I will have to go back for those. **** Huevos is currently doing a pop up Sunday brunch in Crescent Pie & Sausage but this location is currently closed.

Huevos is a great addition to the Mid City breakfast scene, which basically consisted of the Ruby Slipper to begin with. Its a small place with a little menu, but I’ve found that each item is thoughtfully crafted and delicious. Like the name suggests, the menu skews toward Latin inspired things like tamales, huevos rancheros, and breakfast burritos. I’ve had the huevos rancheros, a basic breakfast plate(eggs, chorizo, etc), and the tamales. The tamales were definitely the standout item among them. I particularly loved the charred salsa. Though I usually don’t like flavored coffee, I’ve developed an addition to the coconut iced coffee here. It tastes like sunblock smells, but it tastes so great! Plus, they have donuts from the best place in the city: the buttermilk drop.

I had the Blue Jay Breakfast Burrito, which I hear is named so due to the Jesuit students stopping there on their way to school for a breakfast burrito. I also had some black beans and a side of avocado. It is counter service and we got our food pretty quickly. I’d agree with a previous review that said having some covered outdoor table would be a big plus. They should also offer Cholula hot sauce, cuz nothing goes better with a breakfast burrito than Cholula… It’s good to see great things like this happening in this neighborhood. Update: 12÷5÷2010− Went for breakfast yesterday morning. Food was excellent, but I had to wait 50 minutes for a Jay Walk burrito and a tamale. If I hadn’t already paid I would have cancelled and walked.

Huevos is like the Elizabeth’s of Midcity, except that it has a much smaller menu and a Latin twist. I really liked my breakfast here. It’s located on Banks St, about a dozen potholes towards the Lake from Jesuit High School, which has apparently inspired their«Blue Jay Special» menu item. With Juan’s on Carrolton and two other Taquiero type places a few blocks farther along the same street, this area has noticably increased the Latin-inspired offerings compared to preK NOLA. You can sit outside or inside on their wooden tables and chairs. You order at the counter and pay upfront before your food arrives. They’ll bring your food to your table, but you can self-serve your own water and coffee from a side table. The menu is hand written on the wall in chalk. I tried the Huevos con tamale, which I really enjoyed. It consists of two poached eggs atop three tamales, which have already been unwrapped for you. I don’t know if they’ve changed their dish since the below review, but I thought the portion sizes were appropriate. Most dishes are garnished with a few slices of fresh peppered avocado. I also tried a side order of bacon, which was thick and smoky. I managed to steal a few bites of the huevos rancheros off my friend’s plate, and it has a nice charred salsa. Most of what they offer is $ 5 – 10. They are also now accepting credit cards. Service was friendly. If I was anywhere in Midcity and in need of breakfast this place would be one of my top choices. I’m docking a star for their limited options, but what they do, they do very, very well.

Tried Huevos a couple weeks ago with a group of four people. It was a pleasant and tasty experience. The neighborhood is certainly interesting and Huevos certainly adds to it by leaps and bounds. The food was very good and served in a timely manner. Maybe I’m not one for these sorts of places, but the whole mismatched chairs, plates and mugs just throws me off. It seems like someone opened a restaurant by shopping at a garage sale. But for some that is quaint. Two of us opted for the signature Huevos Rancheros, which were very good. I would certainly like to try some of their other dishes, but I would readily get the huevos rancheros again. It was a cold day and we were forced to sit inside, but on a nice day the outside option is the way to go. The place is certainly worth checking out. I love supporting new places in difficult neighborhoods. I really hope they make it over there.

My buddy ended our meal by saying«this may have been the best breakfast(shrimp n grits) i have ever had.» I didn’t exactly feel this strongly, but i did enjoy huevos! I had the southern breakfast which was great. The wheat toast was sweet, their house sauce for the eggs was delicious, and the hash browns with onions and peppers was AWESOME! Everything looked really good and their prices are ridiculously fair. They even have a baked good section with donuts and pastries. The attitude is really nice in here. Very Mid City! They have a lot of kinks to work out: 1. COVERED outdoor seating 2. More seating 3. Accepting credit cards 4. Adding a few more items to the menu. All in all, a great adventure and one that i will look forward to in the future!
