My daughter just moved to New Orleans and we had only a few days to buy furniture and get her moved in. We happened upon Discoveries Furniture by chance and found a beautiful gray/blue dresser and a muted green desk with chair, a fabulous flower mirror and a few more odds and ends. The guy and gal who work there were incredibly kind and so attentive. We put everything on hold and ran around all afternoon looking at other furniture stores but came back to Discoveries to buy everything– the furniture was the cutest that we saw and for the best price! It was the end of the day, the store was closing and there was a huge thunderstorm approaching – the guy and gal who worked there helped us load up my daughter’s pickup truck with all of the pieces(actually we watched while they loaded the truck) making sure everything was packed tightly and we were in such a hurry to avoid the storm. The salesperson even took the time to tell us how to drive back quickly to avoid the potholed streets and construction on St. Charles. My daughter LOVES her pieces from Discoveries and we would highly recommend this store! They were fantastic!!!

Nice folks who had free egg nog and cider out for guest during the weekend before xmas. Some very unique pieces and rather okay pricing for Magazine street.

I resisted going into this place for a while out of loyalty to Nadeau, which is on the next block down. They seem to have a lot of the same suppliers, or at least to have buyers with very similar tastes. That being said, at Nadeau I always find a mix of expensive, very ornately carved«statement» pieces and more everyday-style furniture. The few times I’ve stopped in, Discoveries has only had the former. A lot of their pieces are really gorgeous, but I’m just not going drop a thousand dollars on a bookcase, even if it is made out of an old canoe. And their smaller home accessories — many of which are Louisiana-themed — are cool but overpriced and seem to be aimed more at the tourists who stop in here. Really, the rest of us can just go find a shingle and stencil some designs onto it; it sure won’t cost $ 28. Unless I hit it big someday and decide I must stock my home exclusively with weather-beaten, hand-painted Indonesian furniture, I’ll be sticking with Nadeau and with my thrift stores.

For those of us who despise the IKEA aesthetic, or even those of us who wish to avoid mass-produced furniture made in China, there’s Discoveries. Steer clear from veneer?(Sorry, I had to) — They’ve got you covered. I mean, solid. Appreciate repurposed/reclaimed wood? Love a SE Asian/Indian aesthetic? Don’t cringe at the words, «rustic» or «shabby chique»? Get thee to Discoveries immediately. Prices are fair, too. Discoveries has quickly become my favorite furniture store in town. I will admit to frequenting Nadeau down the block before Discoveries moved shop from the French Quarter to Magazine Street. But now, there’s factors that made me change my mind: The layout is much more spacious. In Nadeau furniture is piled all on top of each other, and crammed into a small space. Which leads me to my second point: The staff is much much more helpful at Discoveries. As in, they actually help you when it comes time to load stuff into your truck(or in my case, the truck I borrowed). Case in point: a couple weeks ago I purchased two pieces from Discoveries, one of which had to be around a million pounds and the nice guy & girl working there actually hoisted one at a time on a dolly and brought them out for us(and helped load into the truck). Thanks, Discoveries. Even if you’re slightly more expensive than Nadeau(and not always on all things), the better customer service wins. Finally, there’s this: even if a piece of furniture is damaged, Nadeau NEVER lowers their prices. I found a perfect cabinet recently that had clearly been damaged due to its placement near the front door. I pointed this out to the sales person who gave some kind of lame«we sell all furniture as is.» Yeah, good luck with that. Discoveries has seasonal sales. They have tons and tons of gorgeous pieces in a variety of styles. Excellent craftsmanship. Adore.

I swore I wrote a review this place and this time I solved the case of disappearing review. I had modified the downtown location when it moved uptown and wrote a review. Unilocal HQ decided to add a new listing instead. I don’t really understand why sometimes a move is just a move and other times it’s a new listing That little rant aside, this place has interesting furniture and accessories. My last visit was not as successful as my first and some of the interesting small items were not in evidence, but they had just gotten a new shipment of furniture so maybe some small items were tucked away for safe keeping while they maneuvered all the furniture around. I do wish this shop had more small pieces. Much of the furniture is really large which might work well in large suburban homes but not so much in my 19th century house. The staff offered assistance and apologized for the clutter, otherwise I was left to my wandering.

Need help with a purchase? Forget it, there is no customer service. As in, complete silence. You will be ignored. I guess they make enough money on one-time customers that they don’t need to spend any effort on the service aspect of their business.

Interesting household and furniture items. We bought some candles — they have a variety of flavors. Service was fine though they were quite busy so we had to wait. A good store if you like more antique and unique, expensive household and furniture items.

Stylish, solid wood furniture and decorative pieces for your entire house. I like the open warehouse-type layout of the business. Lots of natural light and ease of walking in and out while perusing their wares. The employees are friendly and helpful. My friend has purchased multiple pieces from here and I will certainly be back to check out their newest pieces when I move down.
