Ty’s is a humble neighbourhood bar with friendly bartenders and custom! The music is never too loud, the beer’s always cold and it’s just dodgy enough to keep the straight females from invading(as they have every other gay bar!) Ty’s is one of the few gay bars left in New York City I feel comfortable in and with their specials nearly every night, you won’t leave with an empty wallet! Also notable: Ty’s is one of the few bars that supports gay organisations such as the BALLBREAKERS(softball club) and EMPIRECITYMC(the oldest motorbiker club in the USA)!

A nice bar, especially if you like the older crowd. Fairly divey as well. So I felt pretty comfortable regardless of being by myself.

How can you not like a bar that buys your third drink when they don’t even know you? Wonderful staff and inviting atmosphere… A great place to watch Sunday’s games. The house brew is Ty’s Amber Draft… a at $ 4.00 … A tasty treat.

One of the good olé standbys. Always friendly barkeeps and reasonable prices And not a «pretty boy» bar, but just ordinary people out to chug a few brews or cocktails. An old village hangout for decades.

Last week I stopped at Ty’s with a dear Lesbian friend of mine, suddenly while we are talking quietly in a corner an old & creepy guy come asking why she was there. I said she is my friend and is with me, he says AHOK I don’t like woman taking over this place(thing I honestly don’t understand much what she can take or anybody would like to take from him) Not even mention how my friend felt. This Sunday, I stop by with a gay friend and two girls(one the same Lesbian friend); they were travelling back to their country in an hour and we decided to have a farewell beer. At the door, the bouncer doesn’t let me in, I ask why, he says come back later I can not tell you, I can not let you in. I ask why we can not go in again. he repeats come back later I can not let you in and pushes me from the door out of the bar. not giving us any explanation. I was total embarrassed for me to take dear friends to a place and being discriminated at the door, and my friend thought it was because of her, a completely unfair and shitty situation.(my friends are grown up serious professionals and not screaming bimbos just to clarify) this is a bar where I had been leaving money for 15 years now every week. my only assumption is That we were with two woman. If that is the case you must tell me woman are not allowed clearly, have a clear not woman allowed policy about it and afford the consequences of the bar discriminatory policy. As for us we went and spent money in a friendlier bar in the corner and had a great time. what is in the future; very simple, many nights having a drink with friends but«Not in Ty’s» the money I used to sped there will be spent somewhere else. I will never step again that place not anyone I know if I can avoid it; I will not let any friend at least when we are in the village with me to stop in that place ever again. it’s 2015 and I don’t support discrimination specially coming from a gay bar towards gay people. I will not tolerate anybody not let me in in any place without a clear reason. very sad buy Ty’s you really suck. if you want to live in an inclusive world, don’t give money or support this people.

Been here a few more times since my initial review. Everytime Gary and Julian are wonderful to me. The guys who come here are always friendly and outgoing and great share a laugh or two with. Beware of some young girls who have never been into a gay bar and think they own the joint. Just ignore them though. They don’t know any better; they just weren’t raised right.

First time going here was on a Friday. It’s an okay bar, located towards the end of Christopher St. Crowd is mostly older men and some young otters here and there. Drinks were good, the bartender served me an Appletini in these funky looking glasses that curved and looked like something out of a 3D printer! Very clean, which is a plus.

This is my first time coming here because of happy hour but its will be my last. Could get crowded on weekends. Also don’t try the lemonade. It not that strong but the price is reasonable. Customer service could be improved. For a place that have a joyful music. Its still dreadful. Not impressed. Space is very small. Very crowded. And very dark. Place is a huge mess. I would not even bring my dog here..

If you’re gay and live in Chicago, and consider yourself more Big Chicks/Scot’s than Hydrate/Spin, you’ll feel quite comfortable at Ty’s. It’s smallish, but the drinks are strong and the folks working there are very friendly. My best mate lost his wallet there, and they had it waiting for him when we went back the next day. Phew! Affable crowd that skews north of 40.

Five years ago my husband and I have had to begin traveling to NYC twice a year for a week each trip. Since my husband, Rick, is traveling part of the week for business and the remainder of the week for leisure, I have a few days and evenings that I can wander the city alone. Five years ago I wandered into Ty ‘s for an early mid afternoon cocktail(or two or three) and was greeted by Ron who immediately made me feel at home. I’ve been returning to Ty’s most every day of every one of our NYC visits since. Rick and I both really enjoy it here. Friendly patrons and super sweet bartenders make Ty’s my home away from home and is often the starting and ending point for our cocktail time. All of the other bartenders have also been as fantastic and welcoming as Ron. Hubby thinks that Ron should apologize to every staff member for allowing my mouth to enter the bar that first time! Cheers and thanks again to Ty’s entire staff — Ron, Gary, Anthony, Julian, Allen and Jeremiah. XOXO Brian and Rick from North Carolina Make merriment. Dine. Enjoy! — Brian

Historic bar on Christopher Street… and not just because most of the guys who come here look like they fought in the Civil War! I kid, I kid. This is a pretty nice place. Drinks are reasonable. It’s pretty small but there are tables and seats so you have a place to put your beer when you’re standing around. On the Saturday I was there, the crowd skewed older, bear-ier and leather-ier, but that wasn’t the entire clientele. I saw a guy wearing a sportscoat and I had on a sweater(cashmere, naturally) so there’s that. They had some interesting videos on the giant TVs. One was showing a basketball game and one was showing a video for some rugby team that was making a calendar. Bartenders were very nice. This is a nice, laid back place to have a drink.

Ty’s is a fun bar to visit once in awhile. As an early 30 something, visiting Ty’s makes me feel like a delicious piece of baby back ribs about to be gummed to death in a Miami Retirement Center, so it is quite flattering. I do like the sense of generic warmth and low-grade sleaziness so I keep going back once in awhile. But for me, Ty’s is really awesome on a Friday night because it doesn’t charge cover, isn’t mobbed by lesbians*, Bridge and Tunnelers, and NYU Students**, and has super cheap drinks. Also the bartenders are complete sweet hearts. On the down side, the place isn’t that clean, it’s just a single room with not that much to look at, and it can feel a bit cruisy. Just come well armed with either a look that says, don’t you dare talk to me, or a pleasant but forceful personality that says, okay I’ll talk to you but don’t grab my ass. * Nasty lesbians, we hates it preciousss! ** there.are.not.words.for.these.people

I go to bars like this on the nights when there’s about 6 people total. So, that’s a preface to this review and also what I like to do in bars. Small, but cozy place to get to know someone and have a good drink. Long Island Iced Tea I had was hand-crafted, meaning it was good and strong. Yum. Decorations for the holidays were rustic and actually just pretty, not impeding on the mood. Two flat screen TVs were playing football, but I’ve also heard other stuff is played on them when there’s no game.(Other stuff being, perhaps, inappropriate for young Unilocalers). I’d recommend this place and I’m happy I went. It was recommended to me by a friend. Apparently, my beard is welcome there, so I suppose the rest of me should be able to get a drink while i’m at it!

Been going to this place on/off for many years, but something has definitely changed recently. They seem understaffed, and the staff doesn’t seem able to keep an eye on the«drunks» that claim the tables(there are only 2) as their personal property. It’s disappointing, that you can get harassed inside a bar, where all you might want to do is have a drink, and maybe find 6 square inches for your drink.

I went early evening and it was a couple years ago. I was visiting NYC by myself and on the secon day my dog died. I was pretty depressed but went in, sat at the bar and ordered a drink. I got to talking with the bartender who was extremely nice. When I spoke of my dogs passing, he and all the patrons raised a glass to toast. An all in all friendly bar. Will make it a point to visit again.

a pretty small bar with a typical older men patrons. i wouldn’t discriminate the people, but i felt like a ‘sore thumb’ though. oh yea, my gin n tonic was pretty WOWZAAAA… MELIKEY. plus, the drink was pretty cheap! most definitely. what’s interesting about this bar? well, they play hit musics. and i saw a sign on the corner that says NODANCING. oh well… onto the next bar, indeed. this bar felt like a West Village institution, and i felt honored that i visited this bar, no matter what.

Good bartenders. Full of a bunch of bears and older guys. My friends and I have been hit on by some rather strange characters in there. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit there.

This was one of three gay bars I managed to visit during a short stay in New York City(the others being Stonewall and Suite), and it was by far my favorite. What set Ty’s apart from the other bars was its complete lack of formulaic and mindnumbingly stupid music, which the other two bars had in spades. They played excellent music(notable names during our brief visit were Cut Copy and LCD Soundsystem), the crowd seemed friendly enough, and the guys there were mostly bearish and many were quite cute. The only downside was the bar’s small size … but size isn’t everything.

A fantastic bet for folks just passing through, even shy folks will be charmed by the most excellent and most fantastic Gary, one of the best bartenders I’ve ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Drinks are well-priced and come as fast as you want them, although the intimate bathroom causes a lot of harumphing when trying to exit. I usually don’t save up bars in my memories when I come back home, but I brought back good vibes from Ty’s to Seattle.
