The IFC Center

I will try to avoid this theater in the future. First, the box office did not open until about 7 minutes before the first film (which I was seeing) was supposed to start. Second, the film I was seeing did not start on time, and then, when it started playing, it was the wrong movie. Took almost 10 minutes for the correct movie to start, which put the movie starting 20 minutes late. Last, I saw two movies in two different theaters, and both theaters were freezing. Oh, and the popcorn was awful.

This is my favorite theatre in New York to see indie films and documentaries. I love the size of the place and the variety of films that come through. Definitely a nice little remaining nook of indie art in the city!

This is my favorite Saturday night movie going place. Their selection of movies is awesome, and now I always go every Saturday night despite I am never a movie fan. I love this place!

Lovely small place. Went here to watch Studio Ghibli’s Only Yesterday since it was the only theatre showing it in NYC. The theatre was small and cozy which somewhat become a love and hate situation. Of course there will always be that one person in the theatre that constantly makes sounds. In my case, a girl kept laughing at literally everything to which I do not know why. Otherwise, the staff is very nice. Bathrooms are extremely clean and overall, a nice place.

Really glad this little place still stands. Screens are small but there’s not a bad seat in any house; even when I’ve been tucked at the end of the front row (you should arrive early to grab a good seat) it’s been fine. Great selection of indie flicks — saw Boyhood and several Studio Ghibli films here. I also like watching the Oscar-​nominated shorts here in January. Tickets are $ 14 for non-​members. Popcorn is organic, salty crunchy goodness. Not that guilty-​pleasure goober stuff at AMC.

One of my favorite movie theaters purely by their amazing selection. An indie movie lover’s dream. Plus, they frequently have some sort of special series or collection playing. I was most recently there for when they were playing all of the Studio Ghibli collection and I loved seeing some of my favorites on a big screen. The theaters themselves are decent, although they obviously lack the bells and whistles of the giant multiplexes, but you don’t come here for that anyway. The seats are pretty comfy and at least some of their theaters have stadium seating, so you don’t have to deal with heads blocking your view.
They are one of the few places that play the Oscar-​nominated short films, and it’s one of the highlights of the IFC Center. In my opinion, at least.
If only they sold nachos at the concessions, I’d be in heaven here. Popcorn is way less greasy than other places but still nothing special. On the plus side, because of the nature of their film selection, the audiences here tend to be a lot more civilized. You know what I’m talking about.

I’m a huge fan of this independent theater.
So much so, that I decided to become a member here, to further show my support.
Their popcorn is salty and delicious, their coffee is hot and yummy (cold and yummy in the summertime) and their MELT ice cream sandwiches are especially delicious! (Had the thick mint flavor last night — AMAZING)
The chairs are comfy, albeit a little rundown and squeaky, but I think it just adds to the theater’s charm.
Will be returning again and again.

I went to watch a premier screening for Making a Murderer, a Netflix documentary that is releasing next week or something. The show itself was cool – super tense and insanely stressful – and the theatre had nice people on staff who cheerfully signed me and my friends in and directed us to our seats.
The screen was good, no weird smudges that took away from the immersion like I’ve seen in other theatres.
The seats were terrible though. There was practically no leg room, and the chairs themselves automatically reclined all the way back into an almost horizontal angle with no support whatsoever, so I left 2 hour viewing with the worst strain on my neck.
Overall, I was happy with this place. Interesting indie films and the likes, doesn’t really rely on frills and whatever.

I love the films shown at this Greenwich Village institution.
But I must say that it feels a little spooky knowing there are mice scurrying around. Last evening I saw 2 mice before the film started.
The film was fabulous: ‘Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead’ about the history of National Lampoon.

IFC Center gets it. This theater, once seedy and run down, has been fully renovated and now focuses on daily showing of indie films. The key is that although renovated, the theater still reflects a G. Village/​indie feel, nothing like your typical mainstream movie theater. Theaters are very small, so get there on time. If you frequent Angelika, this is a spot to also consider.

I am SOOOOOOOOO thrilled and excited about the news that IFC will be expanding!!!

To start, you don’t come to IFC Center to be pampered like you would at AMC/​Regal. The priority here is not maintaining an impeccably clean theater, but putting those resources to bringing little-​known films to the screen. For that reason, the audiences at these shows tend to be more intellectual, which I enjoy but that’s the environment one should expect that walking into it. The staff is also very friendly. I lost my ticket once and one of the ticket takers remembered me and helped out.

Movie theater:
The IFC is famous for its eclectic intelligent selections of movies /​indies and documentaries.
And has a laid-​back subculture vibe, one of the few institutions left — which people are longing for «a piece of old school underground Manhattan».
What I saw:
My friend and me enjoyed here the launch of «results» the latest Guy Pearce indie comedy, which hosted Q&A afterwards.
Of course the screening was great (he is one of my favorite actors).
Facilities and Staff
Bathrooms are very clean, theatre seats are very comfortable and big, snacks and drinks available, staff very friendly.
Yes I recommend the IFC to everyone — except small children, obviously —
AND
I will be certainly back enjoying more cultural stimulating movies and documentaries.

As soon as you come Inside you recognize the unmistakable smell of buttery, sweet, and greasy popcorn !!!

This place is a cinephile’s paradise. Homey, and fun by a staff of film buffs who really know their stuff.
Their programming lineup really can’t be beat! Midnight classics, indie up-​and-​comers, whimsical family fare, and LOTS of special guests.
They’ve got some of the best popcorn in town — as well as other speciality concessions. And a well-​curated assortment of films and merchandise for sale too.
Also, their Christmas showing of «It’s a Wonderful Life» just can’t be beat!

It’s a good place to see foreign films and arthouse films. I’ve seen a couple good films here, notably When Marnie Was There yesterday. Be warned that a whole lot of the showings (especially the later) do sell out. I had to come back the next day since I couldn’t see Kaguya (as you can see, I’m a Ghibli person) on a previous night.
On the other hand, if you are going to advertise a good Brooklyn pretzel, you better not have really hard ones. But wait, they were, and not worth it at all for 5 bucks.
Staff is fine, nicer at other theaters.
Price for a ticket is a little high but it is the village
My biggest issue with this place and the only reason why I don’t give it 5 stars is due to the
Seats are generally cozy, or as cozy as you’d expect for a theater. In terms of my favorite locations within a theater to see a film.
Downstairs: Largest, most comfortable chairs, usually used for the big films
Upstairs closest: Very small theater, best sound, usually used for docs
Upstairs furthest: Like downstairs and upstairs combined, usually used for secondary films
Upstairs Other: There is the other theater in-​between that tends to be a bit worse. For secondary films
It’s almost closer to a 3 and would clearly be one… if the movies shown here weren’t so eclectic.

Off the beaten path independent film center. I really like the small intimate theater. This is for anyone who wants to see films that are not in the big theaters.
Seats were very cozy.
Staff was extremely friendly and welcoming.
I will definitely visit here again.

This is your «off the beaten path» film theatre. For anyone who really enjoys cinema and wants to see something other than what you would find in the traditional multiplex, this is the place for you.
From foreign film to art house indies, this is the place to visit.
Staff is friendly and seem to enjoy their work. I would have to imagine that they have a love for the indie scene as well in order to work here.
NYC is lucky to have places like this to entertain us.

I like this cozy movie theater. They show Japanese movies, so I went there many times. I like they play Hayao Miyazaki’s and Studio Ghibli’s animation movie every time new movie was released. It is months later than the release in japan, but still it is precious to watch Japanese movies in a theater in New York.
Recently, I went there to watch «Kaguyahime no Monogatari» (The Tale of Princess Kaguya) two weeks ago. This movie was shown in a tiny theater on the third floor. I was surprised how tiny this theater was. It was the smallest theater i had ever seen. It was like someone’s home theater. I counter the seats. There were only 34 or 35 seats. There are only 4 rows. It was really funny experience. This movie, The Tale of Princess Kaguya was nominated to Academy Award, I hope they move the movie to bigger theater.
After the movie, I saw a worker changing the sign with a stick with suction disk. It is very analog and I loved it. Although there are new big theaters in New york, I hope this kind of small theaters keep existing forever.

I really love good documentary.
No 1 place to go for those in NYC.
Sundance is amazing

As a huge fan of foreign and indie films, I was pretty excited to discover the IFC Center.
So at the earliest opportunity, I came here with a friend to check out their showing of Princess Kaguya.
First thing that bothered me was their ticket price. While $ 14 is pretty standard for NY theaters, it’s not like we were here to watch the biggest blockbuster of the summer; We were here to watch unheralded/​low-​budget indie films. But hey, as long as my money is going towards a good cause, I can’t complain too much.
Second, their screen quality isn’t the best. I’m pretty sure I had to get new glasses after the movie.
Third, what’s up with the sound system? It’s all over the place. It also doesn’t help that their default decibel level caters to the elderly, as in the 80+ crowd. I prefer to lose my hearing due to age, thankyouverymuch.
Fourth, their seating setup, while extremely accommodating of people with short legs, still has a lot of room to grow (pun intended). Literally.
However, seeing as how I haven’t gone to any other theaters that show such a diverse (diverse in the sense that it doesn’t show movies constantly played on commercials) selection of movies, I’m going to stick with the «meh, just average» rating.

Great theater playing all sorts of quirky, interesting stuff. Came here to see Gone With The Wind in the theater, thinking I’d seen the whole thing before and wanting to see it on the big screen. Turns out I’d only seen the FIRST HALF of the FOUR HOUR movie. Man, what a drag. Scarlett is awful, man! And I COULD have seen Jurassic Park!
Anyway, the only thing that prevents me from giving this five stars is the ridiculous prices of the food. I KNOW it’s a movie theater and I KNOW I’m in New York, and I KNOW I should just smuggle my own candy in instead of paying so much for Milk Duds and a soda, but man. Four hours. You gotta eat. Very worth checking out what’s playing here and trying to catch an off-​hour matinée.
