Cool ambiance. Menu items much better than the belt sushi. Overall, not the best rolls… everything has a pound of cream cheese in it but friendly service is a plus!

Small but perfect for lunch time. Good light vibes. Not too much for the sushi. I came on Thursday and was pleasantly surprised that we had a special on 5 dollars for everything. Good overall.

Came here around 4pm on a Thursday because I was STARVING and it was near my office. I’m vegan so nothing on the conveyor belt was suitable — I order the Yasai roll which involves cucumber on the outside(??), shittake, lettuce, spinach, carrot, tomato. First of all, there were approximately three people in the entire restaurant yet it took almost 20 minute to make ONE roll = 4 pieces. Really terrible service… I can’t imagine what this place is like at lunch time. In fact, even getting my $ 4.90 check took 5 minutes. Now, onto the food. My roll was really oddly structured… I have no idea who decided to wrap a normal sushi roll in a huge strip of cucumber that ended falling apart. I love shiitake mushrooms in sushi but I could barely taste the mushrooms here. Also, I get that this is a Mexican place but I have no idea why there was a tomato in my roll; it was definitely out of place. The idea of a conveyor belt works if the place is really busy and the sushi is being eaten quickly but all of the sushi looked pretty old, especially considering that sushi is meant to be eaten fresh… Also, that can’t be super sanitary given that it’s raw fish? Overall, this was some of the worst sushi I’ve had — combined with the service — I definitely wouldn’t return.

I happened to be at Felix(that place is crazy!) across the street one Sunday afternoon with some friends. We were hungry and were intrigued by conveyer belt sushi. I’ve been to conveyor belt sushi restaurants before, and they can definitely be fun experiences. However, the service at this place was atrocious. Our waiter messed up our orders 3 times – we had to send things back before one of my friends just decided to take the roll that was given to her(even though it wasn’t what she ordered). After waiting 45 minutes or so to finally get our food… the waiter only brought rolls for two of us. The other two had to wait an additional 15 minutes to get their roles. They did comp us an extra roll, however. More importantly, there was only one plate of sushi on the conveyor belt! The restaurant wasn’t dead either… most of the tables were filled. So none of us was able to get anything off the conveyor belt. Finally, the sushi was pretty average here. The only thing that I really liked was the crunchy rice cakes with tuna. I won’t come back here.

This place was such a fun experience that I would love to go back again to in the near future. You walk in and the conveyor belt is all around the restaurant with tables next to it on both sides. So the cool thing is if you see something you want you can just pick it off right away. So you spend majority of your time looking at the sushi on the conveyor belt and looking to see what is what. Also they have spanish music playing which gives it a fun feel. The fun thing about this place is its sushi with a Mexican twist so it was a fun new experience for me. I kinda just was picking up whatever I thought sounded good. Some I liked and some I didn’t. We were a little disappointed because I noticed some of the rolls weren’t popping up and I really wanted to try them. They also have fun appetizers that you can order to help fill you up. The only thing I’d have to say I don’t like is it adds up. If you’re trying to eat on a budget this isn’t the place for you. They only give you 4 pieces of sushi and each plate costs a different price. I was pretty hungry so I kept picking up plates. So it might end up costing you more then you like. However I do think it is worth a try at least once.

Concept wise, sushi on a conveyor belt is very cool but the quality of the sushi rolls were just average. They also cost 6−7& for only four pieces… this is like grocery store quality sushi, where you normally pay the same price for 9 pieces, so there is definitely something to be said about the restaraunt charging for experience. That being said, we came in on a quiet night with some out-of-towners who wanted to ball hard with sake bombs. We ordered so many the staff gave us a bottle of sake on the house! Such generous service, so thanks for that, TAKATAKA :)

Cool interior, nice staff but seriouslyyyy over rated food. fr food, this review would be 2 stars but I have to give them credit for their design, concept and service. But for such a cool concept of Mexican sushi, they really missed the mark and opted for mall-variety, blandness that would appeal to the masses, who don’t eat either cuisine often. But a) it’s NYC and b) it’s Mexican sushi fusion. I daresay people come here for really creative food and new tastes, not cream cheese filled rolls and an entire appetizer menu made up of primarily tuna.(I mean, throw in some salmon, roe or yellowtail at least!) Their food is nothing different from takeout sushi places but twice the price. We came here with a Gilt which let us try four of their sushi rolls from the conveyer belt, one entrée, sake and dessert. It seemed like a great deal to try out a new place and in theory it was, but the food didn’t live up to the hype. The sushi on the conveyer belts was clearly sitting out all day; was old, saggy and just sad. They didn’t make us fresh ones so we had to make do with what was out so I have to rate on that. We also got the tekka don to share as a meal and it was tasty but pretty paltry on tuna for the price, and very rice heavy. However, the sake and dessert was yummy and their cocktails and appetizers looked really good, and our server was really nice but they really could have taken this concept to the next level. And through the variety of the Gilt deal, I feel we tried enough items on their menu to not want to return for the near future. Nothing special, definitely A-OK.

Sushi Conveyer Belt? Yes. Fusion Food? Yes Exciting Music and Menu? Yes On paper, this place seems so exciting, and yet both times I’ve been disappointed by the food and the staff. First off, be prepared to drop a chunk of change if you’re going to try out new things. It’s expensive and runs you on average $ 5 a roll, and you’ll need a few to fill you up. Definitely overpriced, especially for the mediocre quality; most of the rolls had some flavor, but nothing jumped out as me as warranted for how much I spent. Next, prepare to be ignored for most of the time that you’re there. There were maybe three or four other tables full and we had a hard time waving down the waiter or getting any attention for water. After giving them the check, we could see the waiters stand around while we waited for another ten minutes. Unfortunately, there is little compelling me to return again. So much promise, but such poor execution.

*not your typical sushi rolls. Expect more cream cheese, expect less«California roll». *sushi plates are color coded based on four different colors, ranging from ~$ 5-$ 8 each plate. *each plate comes with four really fresh pieces of sushi roll. *you can request to have a sushi roll made if you haven’t seen it rolling around on the conveyor belt yet and/or ask them to make some without the spice. *Rice Cakes are crunchy deliciousness with spicy tuna tartare. *staff were SUPER friendly and attentive.

Taka Taka works for me. It’s a nice place to catch an impromptu lunch, and discuss the daily goings on with friends and/or coworkers in a relaxed environment. The concept of Mexican/Japanese fusion is interesting, and there are more than a few tasty rolls to choose from. If you cannot find something to your liking on the belt, you can request to have it prepared. I have had the fortune of dealing with extremely friendly, and helpful staff every time I have visited. If you’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Shian, you’re missing out. Sometimes she hosts, other times she waits the tables, but she never disappoints. In summation: Good food, good drinks and great service. Taka Taka is definitely on my frequent visit list.

+++ — Really interesting concept making sushi out of Mexican products, and making Mexican dishes out of ingredients used to make sushi ++ — I enjoyed the sushi sashimi tostado, there’s a spicy kick to it + — IMO Chabelo sushi can be shared by two people. Although it is 8 pieces, it’s eight large pieces, each one densely packed with flavor — I liked it +/- — There’s $ 8 juices which I forget the name of. Although they are good, I was expecting a flavor blast. Definitely consider adding alcohol. - — EX-PEN-SIVE and no lunch specials, any day you pay $ 30+ for lunch is not a good day(unless you’re being treated, lol) I think they should add lunch specials — This place would be four stars, if it were a little cheaper TIPS: — Don’t get sucked in, taking from the conveyor belt while waiting for your dish. You don’t realize how much you’re increasing your bill until it’s too late.

Really Wish I could leave this one a 3.5 star, but alas my options are options. came here for the 3rd time ever last night, but finally got around to doing a review. It is known for having mexican sushi entrees, and vice versa. I love the conveyer belt concept, and warn the super hungry not to grab the first option that comes out as it may not be the best, I also accidentally went to far on the belt and nearly caused a back log by knocking the sushi to the side, but luckily recovered before any embarrassment ensued. Half a roll costs anywhere from $ 4.50 to $ 7.50, I took some salmon and vegetable combos, and felt it was a thoroughly descent appetizer. For my main course I got the Sea Bass Tempura which they removed the chile sauce from(not a spicey fan at all) and man did it hit the spot. The seabass mixed with the beans and pico de gallo really hit the spot. My problem is the serving size was about 8 little finger food size tacos, and it cost me $ 21.50! The final bill was over $ 40 bux(and thats without a drink, just water). If they priced accordingly to portions I think this would be a solid 4 star place as the service was pretty fast, and waiter was friendly enough. I could imagine this joint getting crowded on weekends, and enjoy the diner style seating, a nice change of pace for the usual SoHo Posh restaurant feel. Come for the novelty, but make sure you go to the ATM machine first :).

I swung by a Unilocal event before my dinner at Taka Taka, and since it was around the corner I figured why not give the spot with the sushi on a conveyor belt another try? When we arrived, the place had a few booths open and our waiter appeared fairly quickly. The notion of Taka Taka is to try a fusion of sushi and Mexican food, whilst 20 different types of sushi rolls move past you on a conveyor belt next to the table. When you’re hungry, you will generally grab the first half-way decent roll(4 pieces=1 roll, from $ 4.50 to $ 7.50) to scamper past. Note: If you are high, do not come here, you will grab 7 rolls and probably run out of cash faster than at a New York City Supermarket(Morton Williams, sigh). I sampled a few of the tuna/salmon variations and I thought they were mediocre, especially for the cost. For my main course I ordered the Tuna Carnitas($ 20). These were actually pretty delicious, although the serving size was not all that impressive(6 pieces). All in all, I ate 2 rolls(8 pieces of sushi) and Tuna Carnitas(6 pieces) and left fairly content, albeit $ 43.00 lighter in the wallet. I would consider coming back here again if somebody liked the gimmick. But I certainly would not make this a regular stop for my sushi needs.

Overpriced. But… the mix of Mexican and Japanese is a winner. The small restaurant with a less than elegant conveyor belt for sushi is very good. I like that the sushi comes in groups of four pieces because really you want to taste it, but I think $ 7.00 is $ 3.00 too high. The shrimp tacos are a great $ 10 item… the problem is they list for $ 20! It’s clearly a $ 10 item. The #10 roll with mango was a bust but the #21 I believe with eel and Tuna is a winner(but not for 7.50 for 4 pieces). Service was less than good but there was only one waiter for the whole place . So go, but only with a groupon.

Interesting food concept but overall is just OK. Smells really good when you walk in, the service is excellent, and the drinks are unique and tasty. Order the Guacamole Tuna Tataki and Japanese tacos(we ordered the Shrimp Tempura and Rib Eye Teppanyaki. Skip the sushi; it’s not very good or very flavorful. I wouldn’t make it a point to go back here but if I was in the area I’d stop in again.

Was lured in by the Mexican sushi and Japanese tacos slogan. Extremely disappointed by the taste of the sushi. Poor quality and flavor. The sushi was warm and loosely wrapped. The service was awful. I had to ask for water. And then I had to ask for a napkin. The waiter brought me the different sauces and wasabi AFTER I finished my meal. Definitely won’t be going back.

What a creative idea of mixing two types of ethnic foods together but doesn’t have that wow factor especially for overpriced sub par food. I got a good deal from living social which consisted of a pitcher of red or white sangria, one appetizer, one special roll or two rolls from the conveyor belt, Japanese tacos, and one dessert to share for $ 50. I ordered the Beef Tataki which was filling but wasn’t as tender and juicy as I thought it would be. For the main roll I ordered the el chavo which was lobster and tempura vegetables with avocado. It was a very unique sushi roll but the flavors didn’t come together as I imagined it. It honestly was just weird. I did enjoy the rib eye tacos because I was already full at this moment because it really was a decent amount of food already. They aren’t traditional tacos like taco bell tacos but they use tortilla and cut them to look like sushi rolls.(Not worth $ 20 ish bucks if paying full price) I wish Taka Taka had more bold flavors in their dishes that better portrayed what they were trying to accomplish because it just felt like a confused restaurant. Service was ok. I probably would come back here again if they do a similar deal again.

Interesting concept, but super pricey for a Mexican-Japanese fusion. We got the Guacamole tuna tataki, while it was good, I think mixing in the tuna and standard guac ingredients really plays down the tuna. The conveyor belt items were just alright. We stopped after the first plate and decided to try the yakitori sticks. Those were the best of the meal. I’ve tried it and didn’t love it, so I won’t be back.

Who thought of this Japanese Mexican fusion idea? They are genius! I love sushi and I can’t live without hot sauce so this is a great combination for me. My husband and I came here for dinner and we got one of those cute booth. There is a maki roll conveyor belt going around the seats to deliver fresh maki rolls with fusion flavors. Each color plate corresponds to a different price. We tried the avocado, snow crab and eel with cream cheese roll. There are 4 pieces in a roll so the price is not cheap. I love the combination though. Their dipping sauce in addition to your typical soy sauce is also well thought out. There is hot jalapeño pickles, chipotle sauce and a jalapeño sauce. We also had the Shrimp Tempura with Chile Piquin roll and it is very delicious. We were so ambitious we got another roll of mango and avocado with shrimp. We were pretty satisfied by then. But of course, we don’t just stop at being satisfied, do we? We followed the rolls with another Rib Eye Tacos. It is $ 20 a plate so it is not your typical taco price. It is more like a wrap cut into many sections. The rib eye is so tender and juicy and I don’t know what sauce they use but it is amazing! I did that in the chipotle sauce with the jalapeño pickles. Super yum! Of course, we also had to try the Garces Mexican style sushi roll. It has sliced jalapeño rolled over Manchego cheese, shrimp and different sauces. It is pretty good and filling. By then, we couldn’t stomach anything else anymore. I really enjoy the food and like how attentive our waitress April is. I will come back to try different rolls for sure!
