We ordered the soup pork and shrimp dumplings. The shrimp was lacking flavor and tasted bland. We also ordered the shrimp and broccoli but the walnuts were kind of burnt. They should have added more mayonnaise. Other dishes we ordered were nothing amazing plus quite oily.

Personally, this is the worst restaurant ever, I wanna give it hard 0 really. I’m originally from Asia and I also like Chinese food and I would say that all the cuisine use the same sauce in this place and I can’t believe that beef noodles is sweet… all of my friends are feel uncomfortable with that. I will never get there again!

Worst service ever… they don’t refill our water or tea, leave our fresh dishes on the edge of the table for us to find a spot, and bad attitudes. Food was mediocre and just not up to par. Prices are reasonable, but there are much better places to eat. The only good dish is their soup dumplings, nothing else.

Recommended Dishes: Shrimp & Broccoli = Although this isn’t the best version of the iconic Chinese dish, this was a-okay to eat… I wish they had slathered the shrimp with more mayonnaise… they definitely skimped out on it. Steamed Fish w/Orange Sauce = Super healthy and delicious! I Do Not Recommend: Crab = It took too much time to eat and it didn’t taste as fresh as I would have liked it to be. I didn’t like how a mandatory 20% tip was orally ordered from us. The receipt did not have any tip suggestions, yet the woman who worked here said the minimum tip was 20%.

I am going to be brutally honest about my experience here. When I first went inside the restaurant I was feeling good about the atmosphere of the restaurant. I sat down and started to read the menu and ordered the bell pepper pepper steak with a side of chicken fried rice. I actually liked the food but that’s not the reason why I’m giving this a 2 star. I’m giving 2 stars because of the way the staff were carrying themselves, to me the waiters and waitresses were rude and one thing I didn’t mention was that I ordered a Strawberry Milkshake and the waitress told me they were going to see if they have any more ingredients to make said milkshake. I waited and she just left and took other people’s orders. My food came in and I was still waiting for my milkshake, then I asked another waiter for the milkshake and he promised me that they were making the milkshake and eventually I never got it. Going back to the waitress being so rude, she started blowing her nose and picking her nose in front of us which made me completely lose my appetite. At the very end of the of the meal she THEN tells me that they couldn’t make the milkshake because they didn’t have anymore ingredients, to which then I was not happy at all because if they couldn’t give me a milkshake at least tell me so I can order some other drink, and then it came to pay for the food, the total was pretty cheap for what I ordered. In all honesty they definitely need to change their demeanor and where they choose to blow and pick their nose because, I’m 90~99% positive, no one wants to see that and yes I know that sometimes the job can get tedious and there will be customers that will make you upset because of the tip they leave, the negative mood they’re in, or maybe they had a really complicated order and the stress levels of getting the food out was very hight but please don’t take out your bad mood on your customers. TL;DR: food was good and the price was good but the staff were very rude and just disgusting.

Followed the dumpling chef from Shanghai Café Deluxe over to this restaurant and have been eating here since. The soup dumplings have good flavor but the meat filling has gone through some shrinkage over the years. But for $ 5 and 8 per order what more can your tummy ask for.(eat them while they’re hot bc the skin gets hard after they’ve sat for a bit) My top fave dishes are: Shredded cabbage and pork fried rice — great flavor and texture. Walnut Shrimp — very fresh and not too much mayo sauce(ask for the sauce on the side) Braised pork belly with shanghai bok choy served with steamed buns — very tender juicy meat draped in an sweet and savory sauce. Tiny fried buns — beware of 2nd degree burns as these buns are juice bombs but after you get over that hurdle the pillowy crispy bottom buns are definitely worth it. I would not recommend the chow mein bc for that price you don’t get much and most of the dishes are served with generic dark brown gravy. If you want chow mein I’d definitely go to 69 Delight on Pell St. and order the double lobster chow mein cantonese style for $ 25 — you won’t regret it. Overall the place tries to keep up with business as its’ neighbor Shanghai Café Deluxe is always packed but if you can’t stand the wait or the crowded tables slide over to Shanghai Heping Restaurant and give them a try.

Some dishes are delicious and some are just disgusting. Their soup dumpling is really so so and I wasn’t really expecting something out of this world. That wonton with spicy sauce is really good thou. I guess they do take reservation on a Saturday night around 7PM however you better order a lot because their waiters are so rude and zero patient. If you don’t know what you want, make sure you do or you are going to be rushed when ordering. As for the service, I won’t expect much from this place. All they want is for you to order, eat and get out. If you stay around chatting or do stupid stuff like asking for a new plate or for napkins or even asking for water, you are being an annoyance for the waiter. Anyway, we will start with the good food. Wonton as mention before will be good. That pork casserole will do too as well as their noodle is not bad. As for the bad stuff, their chef sucks. That fried shrimp is about the worst I had. Take my advise and do stay away from anything fried or chef special.

Soup dumplings sans soup! Kinda dry! Rice cakes with chicken was good, nothing to write home about. The jelly fish and tendon appies were good, kinda just a little boring. Service was okay. Not on my list to come back, unfortunately.

Come for the soup dumplings, stay for the lo mein. It’s true what they say: the soup dumplings here are as delicious, if not more so, than the ones you’ll wait an hour for at Joe’s Shanghai. Piping hot and super fresh, they’re just right. What they don’t tell you is that everything else at this spiffy Chinatown haunt is just as good, especially the noodle dishes. Their beef lo mein is perhaps the best I’ve ever had, in fact. Thick, seemingly hand made noodles, salty sauce, thick slices of beef and lots of veggies, it’s heaven in a plastic takeout container. I like to add some of the black vinegar that comes with the dumplings for a little acidic kick, but it’s definitely not necessary. They don’t do delivery, but if you order for pick up they’ll have your food ready within minutes.

The soup dumpling were really good, and a great price for $ 6. The crispy boneless duck had delicious crispy skin like fried chicken — only $ 16. There was no running water in the restroom or sink. I couldn’t wash my hands, but a sweet Chinese woman in the kitchen gave me a little cup of water to rinse hands. The waiter wasn’t really friendly, but that’s typical of chinese restaurants. They accept CC which is convenient.

Great spot for food in Chinatown. It was not really as greasy as some other places and the service was fast and polite. The restaurant is clean and has an «A» rating. Might be our new spot…

Great tasting food for the price. The only problem I had was the sort of rude service my group and I received from the waitress. While asking a question, she got irritated and pretty much ignored us the whole time we were eating. Friends recommend the pork buns, fried dumplings, stir fried rice, and the fried noodle platter. Just improve the service and it’ll deserve 5 stars.

Yum yum in my tum tum. I’ve been here a few times now and it has become my regular place for my friends and I to dine in chinatown. You can tell that they really try with their décor(they put up decorations for various holidays) and for a restaurant in chinatown, their service is not half bad. Oh yeah, the food is not half bad itself as well. I’ve tried a few things from their menu and here are my recommendations: Sheng Jian Bao(Fried Pork Dumplings): Order it. You won’t regret it. It’s slightly crispy on the outside but still very juicy in the inside. I always get multiple orders of this when I come. Soup Dumplings: Not the best in the neighborhood but not bad. They also give 8 soup dumplings in comparison to 6 like the other places Pork Rice Cake: Another one of my favorites. The rice cakes were flavored and the vegetables clinged onto the rice cakes for a yummy combination. Beef Tendon: Order this as an appetizer if you like spicy food. It has a nice«Ma la» spicy twang to it while you eat. Sesame rice ball: I was told that they make it in house and it shows. The outside was chewy and doesn’t stick to your teeth and the black sesame oozed out from the balls. Would I come back here again? Of course! There are so many options for Shanghainese food in chinatown and somehow shanghai heping has become my to-go place. It’s probably the combination of yummy food and good service.

Very underwhelmed by the whole experience. The selection was good. I ordered the soup dumplings, fried dumplings and dong po rou. True to its name they were made in a Shanghai style. The service wasn’t rushed which is good. However I didn’t feel like it was that great either. Overall it was not bad but I think I might have hyped it up in my head based on the other reviews.

Did this restaurant rebrand itself? I swear it used to be called something else. Anyway, I was craving soup dumplings, and in a jiffy, I came here because I didn’t want to descend into the thick of SoCa(or South of Canal). The soup dumplings are… not atrocious, but so horribly mediocre that I my craving was not whet but merely amplified. The skin was thick and chewy, and the soup/meat filling was bland and lacking in salt. They also misheard our order and instead of replacing the kung pao chicken with the General Tso’s chicken, gave us BOTH. The General Tso’s chicken was crispy and sweet and sour and everything it should be but the kung pao chicken was weirdly sopping in sauce.

There are so many options for Chinese food in NYC Chinatown. My friends wanted dim sum that night so we decided to give Shanghai Heping a try. And it turned out to be a great choice because we left with our tummies full and happy ~~ I love their crab meat soup dumplings. They are awesome, I’d never had anything quite like it. I like the texture of the filling, when they mixed in bits of crab meat with the minced pork. The classic soup dumplings were delicious as well. By this point you probably already figured out that I had A LOT of soup dumplings that night. I couldn’t help it. The vinegar and ginger dipping sauce just made everything even better. We also had the seafood steamed dumplings, which were like har gao(shrimp dim sum). The pot stickers were also pretty good, thought the highlight would still be those soup dumplings. My friend enjoyed the minced pork + fungus(??) noodle soup, which she recommended. It is a light and healthy dish with shanghai noodles, vegetables, some pork bits in a light soup. Not too heavy for a good dinner. The pricing is super reasonable. For all the food we had, it came to about 10 a person and we left the place completely stuffed. I also like their layout, it doesn’t feel cramped inside like some of the other restaurants in the area. We had a nice all-around dining experience and had fun catching up. I would definitely be back for more!

Okay so this place is no Joe Shanghai but the soup dumplings are still very good and a better value. You also won’t need to wait for a table like Joe Shanghai. The soup dumpling is $ 5 for 8 dumplings which is a superb deal considering I eat 4 and am already quite stuffed. The fried pork buns are also a good value! I think maybe 8 buns for $ 5.50. Both the soup dumplings and the pork buns have a lot of sauce inside so be careful as you’re eating! My dad forgot and sauce splattered everywhere and burned his tongue. During this visit we never got our fried pork buns because they burned them and instead asked us to order something else. So we got the Shanghai style fried rice which has pork, chicken, shrimp veggies and onions. One of my fav dishes. Appreciated that they informed us about the pork buns instead of serving us burnt food. They also charged us for the fried pork buns instead of the fried rice which was nice since it wasn’t our fault we changed our order.

I got crab soup dumplings here($ 6) for 8 pieces and the beef tendon($ 6.25)(so good but super spicy– chewy but that’s how I like it). We just wanted to grab a quick bite for dinner– no line and they take card! Cheap authentic food– fast service!

The steam pork dumplings come with 8 dumplings while a lot of shanghai dumpling places come with 6. That itself was a plus for me, and the quality of the dumpling was amazing. The dumplings were all piping hot, and the mean tender and juicy. The steam pork crab dumpling was even better. You can see and taste the crab. That too was hot, tender, and juicy. Other dishes that were ordered was the nian gao, fish, spicy beef tendon and a few more were also pretty good. Although I thought the spicy beef tendon was a bit on the small side, I didn’t expect a bigger portion for the price they charged for it. But besides the price, the spiciness and texture of the beef tendon was on par. Everything ordered was finished, nothing leftover because the food was great. Service was fast and the staff there friendly. The cleanliness of the restaurant was another plus as well.

I have nothing against average, and that is exactly what Shanghai Heping is. When it comes to price point and quality of food, you are no going to go out of your way to eat here. When you look through the glass front and observe all those empty seats, there is a reason. The reason is that typical Shanghainese fare is bland and inconsistent from the variety of noodles dishes to the soup dumplings. The food is not inedible, but whether it is for a better vibe or just better food, there will be a list of three or four you would go to first for Shanghainese before even considering Heping. Shanghai Asian Manor is a bit more expensive, but you get the best quality and value. Shanghai Café and Joe’s Shanghai is pricey as well but definitely popular amongst tourists and young’uns. When you are just indecisive or out of options, Heping is a viable option. When you are content with mediocrity, this is for you. Then again, ask yourself why mediocrity would be acceptable?
