Good food, not great… good service, not great. Easy to get a table, cozy on a cold night and friendly staff.

Tasty and fast on a weeknight. Nobody speaks English except the bartender but they get it done. You can’t beat the taste of the deglazed sauces.

Ceasar salad was so peppery that all of us kept on coughing and could not even finish half of the dish. Pastas were hearty but nothing special. The cod was swimming in half an inch of sauce. Seating arrangement was terrible. Will not go back.

When I’m in NYC, I always try to get to midtown to eat at San Martin. One of my favorite spots. Incredible food. They treat an olé country boy right. First Tuesday night of the month is live jazz. Never been disappointed with the bands.

Ordered the daily special tortilini with fresh clams, shrimp, and sausage with garlic sauce. Excellent and best tortilini I have ever eaten. Good service, pleasant waiters. First time here and will come back again if ever in NY.

Horrible and will never go back. Food was good but service was horrific. 5 tables with people and 4 staff members … I had to go inside to pay the bill because no one came out to check on us after serving food. We ordered bar drinks but they never came. We felt as if we were an inconvenience to the staff. Not even a warm greeting when we came in or an apology when I had to come in and ask for the bill. With all the places in NYC to eat … this place will move to the bottom of my list.

We were lucky enough to be staying right next to San Martin’s but walking from New Jersey would have been well worth it! The people were so kind and accommodating and waited on our every need! They didn’t allow a glass of water to be anything but filled to the rim and we’re happy to answer any and all of our questions! Would recommend this restaurant to anyone! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Very attentive Comfortable booths Not the greatest wine selection Very tasty food Recommend the polenta(great red sauce with plenty of cooked fresh veggies). Also enjoyed the Spaghetti Bolognese; Fresh made pasta and well spiced meat Had a side of Broccoli and it was perfectly cooked with a light olive oil and garlic. When in this neighborhood, stay away from the hotel restaurants and come here instead

Just had a trip to NYC and ate at San Martin. The chicken parm was SOOO good, I am still dreaming about the perfect sauce and amazing mozzarella. If you are in midtown looking for amazing Italian you have to come to this great restaurant. Only suggestion would be to update the booths and décor.

Cozy but outdated place, service not so good and as for the food. Oh man… It was pretty bad! Me and my dad had severe tummy ache with an hr after we ate… Be aware to check you tab if you ever make to this place, their math isn’t so great plus they add 15% gratuity to the actual check without telling you, instead they stamp it. It was only 3 of us no need to do that.

Very pleasant midtown restaurant. The noise level is not too high so we were able to converse fairly easily until a large party came. Prices are not exorbitant. I had the mesclun salad with nice fresh greens. You add your own oil and vinegar. I would prefer a vinaigrette. The $ 26 short ribs on the specials menu seemed perfect for a cold evening. I love short ribs. However they were just roasted, without any sauce. I am not a stickler for sauces, but this is the first time I have had short ribs that were so plain and disappointing. Potatoes au gratin were too rich since the fatty short ribs were also rich. Polenta or rice would have been a better accompaniment. I doubt I will return since there are so many options in the area.

This place is past its prime. We should have known better when the most recent awards hung on the wall are circa 1999. Plastic menus. Overpriced and uninspired entrees. Tasteless appetizers and Costco level desserts all make this a destination to avoid. Service was very friendly if not slow.

My second visit, this time I’m dining in. Very quiet & cozy place. Service is fantastic. I had fresh greens salad with balsamic vinaigrette dress and the trout with mussels and pasta with a palomino sauce. Topped off with a chocolate fudge cake and an Irish coffee. Seriously, on of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time.

WOW! What great food! And how reasonable for NYC! I was very impressed since we stumbled into this restaurant by chance. We left full and happy. Portion sizes were just enough. I had chicken parm and it was excellent from the first bite to the last. My friend got mussels. We left for under $ 30 combined. How can you beat that? Great service too.

First the ambiance, not bad. Definitely an italian hole in the wall, despite being in midtown. Nothing bad, nothing spectacular. Second, the service. The service was fairly so-so, at best. Probably because I was dining alone, but I should still expect decent service. Third — The Value. Bad. $ 8 for a salad of greens, which came from a bag, were tossed with a middle of the road vinagrette sauce? I know it is Midtown, but that was a bit much. Finally, the food. Not great. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan. The breading had no crisp to it at all. There was a layer of water on the bottom of the plate, which made the chicken lose any crisp it might have had. The sauce lacked any real definition at all. No real flavor to it. It felt like a fast food Chicken Parm, but I have actually had better at a chain. I won’t be back in this, or any other visit to New York. Too many good food options to waste on a mediocre one.

Solid food — solid service — solid value. I have dined here at least half a dozen times over the past few years and have yet to have a bad meal or experience with service. I’m not a local but try to come here whenever I am in town. I do not have a big expense account so I try to keep the meal costs reasonable when I am traveling on business. As you can tell from my other reviews, I am a good-value-for-the-dollar type of guy. San Martin Restaurant fits the bill perfectly for me and my colleagues. It’s not the fanciest or even the«best» Italian restaurant in town but it is not Olive Garden either. I can have an appetizer, dinner entrée, and a glass of wine for between $ 40 to $ 55 which is actually a feat in Manhattan. I have enjoyed the filet medallions, pasta bolognese, pasta carbonara, salmon steak, and scampi. Unlike the places down the street where I always feel that the servers are badgering and upselling me, this place is friendly, warm, and unpretentious. I leave full and satisfied while knowing that I did not just light money on fire for no reason. They have a lot of pictures of celebrities on their wall(many of whom are deceased) but I have yet to see Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Robert Downey Jr., or even Justin Bieber holding court on the premises. Perhaps I am coming in on the wrong days… if you are a trendy«foodie» looking for a once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience eating authentic Italian tofu parm prepared by the last Top Chef winner or want the waiter to tell you that your $ 55 glass of wine is from the Italian vintner featured in last month’s Wine Spectator, then this place may disappoint you. Bottom line, folks: If you are looking for a very good meal at reasonable prices with none of the hipster douchebag attitude, then the humble but authentic San Martin Restaurant may be a very good go-to place for you. Happy dining!
