Recommended by my concierge at the hotel. Good atmosphere. I enjoyed sitting upstairs with the wood floors and nice tables. They had a couple Irish beers on tap. Pretty disappointing food. I ordered the fish and chips. Not sure that the two measly pieces of fish had seen water recently and the fries were not long from the freezer. I could get that plate anywhere in the county and pay half for it. The staff was fortunately attentive and timely.

This is my favorite Pub hands down! Been coming here for about a year. A friend who’s been coming here for 10 years took me here and I never looked back. You’ll never see a rude bartender or server in here. Even on stressful nights! Love the true Irish feel. John the Owner is great. Clean place, great and well priced drinks and the best part? BESTPUBFOOD I HAVEEVEREATEN. Just go. Try it.

Hey what can I say, I took a little break from one of my favorite bars in New York; but I came back for the holidays and with it all the great Nostalgia of a New York Classic Irish Bar and all the great times I’ve had here. It’s the American Dream, John D. started as a bartender over 17 years ago and now he’s the successful charismatic owner of the bar and someone I am proud to call my friend. That’s New York Baby!!. Keep the dream alive and come join the good people at the Playwright for some drinks, good sports, pretty bartenders, and JP who is a good bartender who serves you a cold one with a honest smile and good character. I there is always some drink special that will hold you over. Cheers

Just another typical pub with plenty of seating and a good burger. Good spot on the block if you’re meeting up with friends to catch up. Music isn’t too loud where you have to shout and no ridiculous wait for a table. They have an upstairs section which had plenty of seating. I liked that our table had a mini tv for those who want to watch something besides what’s on their large screens. I ordered the playwright burger and it was HUGE. Guacamole and sour cream slathered on top. Good burger. Fries were perfect.

Sat at the bar and had Bangers and Mash. The barkeep was friendly as were many of the other patrons. Please had a cool, oldish charm; very narrow space with a surprising amount of seating that didn’t feel crowded. The meal was just what the 3-stars implies: A-OK. Not amazing but a solid, good meal. Could have used a little more seasoning in the mash. The bangers were cooked well and had a good, rich flavor.

We ducked in here to escape the cold and get some Irish coffee after looking at the windows at Macy’s. The Irish coffee for $ 7 lured us in. We got the Bailey’s coffee and the Mudslide. I liked the mudslide better, but both hit the spot. It was warm in toasty in the bar climate wise. The bartender was in work mood, professional, but not overly friendly. We sat at the bar, and i guess a server brought us our drinks. huh? She was friendly, but not always at the bar so were confused who to ask for stuff as the original bartender just kept walking past us. The bill came and we were surprised it was $ 24 for 2 Irish coffee’s. However, we didn’t read the sign carefully… The Jameson Irish Coffee on the chalkboard had a price of $ 7 below it, surrounding it were the other flavors with no price. Very misleading. I felt duped, but I should have known better. $ 12 for an Irish coffee? At least they were good! My only regret is that we didn’t try the fries, the people next to us got them as we were leaving, boy did they look and smell divine.

Pros: Excellent music and delicious Irish coffee! Beautiful holiday décor. Cons: If your staff doesn’t want to be working on a holiday, please stay closed. The vibe was very much that my business at the bar was wildly inconvenient for the staff. Edit: A new gentleman bartender has come on, much better service.

What a disappointment. I have always found Irish Pubs to be a reliable, reasonably priced, comfortable place to eat and drink. There is a reason pub food is equivocated with comfort food. My experience at the playwright has shaken the foundation of that belief At the bar the disaster begins: Hot wings — breaded, soggy served with wilted celery and an alleged blue cheese dip. Fish and chips– we thought they gave us a ½ order; served with a mystery sauce that was frightening to look at and traumatic to consider eating. When we asked the bartender for a replacement we were told that’s how it’s made. It was made clear resistance was futile. They should inform the public that the curry chicken is served with a microwaved side of bland limp french fries. Then the most disturbing event, the goose Island beer, served from the tap of a Irish pub was flat and sour. Other then the above lunch was fine.

its a fine irish bar… nothing wrong with in that regard, but there are just so so so many better offerings around midtown… is a decent starter… and you will have a good night here for sure… maybe just dont station up for the whole night?!

This place sucks. They just took away all the bar stools because a bunch of Mets fans are coming in an hour. $ 18 for two crappy beers. Pass.

Shay is the best Bartendress there is! What a sweet woman! I have absolutely no problem walking into any establishment solo, and especially this one, because I know I am going to be greeted by Shay’s bubbly personality. Shay is one of several reasons why I continue coming back here. The Playwright is one of those local Irish bar/restaurants that you can sit at the bar and know that you’ll receive good service, pretty decent bar food, decent drinks specials and a chance to chat it up with the regulars or meet one of the many tourists that generally stop in before heading back to their hotel around the Herald Square area. As for food it is pretty good. On this one particular visit out of many, I had an opportunity to hang out with one of my awesomely cool Unilocal buddies, who chose to have the Playwrights lunch special Veggie Panini, so I followed suit and ordered the same. The panini consisted of pesto, grilled vegetables of squash, carrots, onions, mushrooms which we opted out of, and mozzarella which we asked for extra of, all served on grilled flat bread and accompanied by a cup of Lentil soup. This meal was awesome! I never eat when I’m at The Playwright, but so happy that I followed Unilocal buds lead, as it added another reason to my really liking this spot. I am not a vegetarian, but I love my vegetables so this was a great nutritious way to get a satisfying full belly. Good choice Unilocal buddy!!! This bar/restaurant is pretty large. There are tons of flat screens for sporting events, seating towards the front and back as well as upstairs, attentive service, decent food, decent drink specials, warm atmosphere, clean bathrooms, what more can you ask for in a pub? There are tons of bars and restaurants in the area but, if you’re looking for an Irish bar with all of these things then this is one you must try.

I regularly host video game parties at Playwright Pub, and this place is a gem. 1. They have tons of screens that are easily configurable to whatever you want to watch, including live internet broadcasts(eg ) — we do this to watch League of Legends and Fighting Game tournaments! We’ve even brought consoles out and plugged them into the larger games for mini tournaments of our own. 2. Staff is patient, helpful, and even enthusiastic about learning about the game and sharing our passion with us while we’re there! 3. The food and drink selection is delicious! Portions are generous, 3 – 4 people can easily share a plate of their nachos, and I recommend the Playwright burger to everyone. I’ve been hosting parties there for the better part of a year and am so thankful that the bar has been so accommodating to us for so long. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to host a viewing party of any kind there, they’re welcoming to all kinds of interest groups!

My friend invited me for lunch — $ 13 lunch special — the fish is so good compete with French Restaurant — and service good too — free wine — what?! in NYC? what a bargain. Great place for lunch for group — casual and so Irish — love it — will come again anytime!

I originally came to The Playwright to duck out of pedestrian traffic and hide out until rush hour was over. It was there, so I went in. Luckily, I love Irish pubs. The hostess was very welcoming and willing to accommodate my seating preferences. The bartender that was working on my first visit was an absolute delight. She was attentive, upbeat, and had a thorough knowledge of the food and drink menu. I ended up having a few glasses of Chardonnay and the nachos, which were generous in portion and abundant with toppings. It’s rare for me to try a Chardonnay I don’t like, so no complaints there! The prices are more than fair, especially for an establishment in such a tourist-heavy area. I enjoyed my visit enough to return the very next day. I continued to drink Chardonnay, but this time I ordered the Buffalo wings and the Angus sliders. Both were above-average in terms of what I expect when it comes to bar food, with a flavorful wing sauce that exceeded what most places offer. The bartenders on my second visit were equally as kind and prompt with service as the one on my first visit! It makes such a difference to receive service with a smile and a positive attitude. They also have senses of humor. I’ll bet this bar gets crowded later on in the week, but the atmosphere of the bar was chill, especially for midtown. The lighting is progressively dimmed as the evening goes on. The seats at the bar are very comfortable. The bathrooms are clean. There is an upstairs lounge, but I haven’t checked it out yet. I’m happy to have discovered this gem of a pub in a section of town that I’m not crazy about to begin with, and I’ll definitely be back!

I went here during a conference with a few co-workers. I ordered the Hawaiian burger which came with Canadian ham, mozzarella, sweet and sour sauce and grilled pineapple. I ordered it without a bun and a baked potato instead of chips or fries. It was good! The service was quick and they were able to provide us with separate checks without any problem. Recommend for a lunch or after-work spot. This is definitely casual.

Nice waitress but blah food. Burger was good because of the sauces and salt, but nothing extraordinary. Good selection of beers. Very large place so if you’re looking to relax and unwind after work without things getting to loud and hectic, then this is your spot!

Ambiente tipico de um Pub. Hamburguer Gaelic é perfeito. Cervejas Draft geladas. A noite o som é um pouco alto e o banheiro precisa de limpeza mais frequente, por esses deslizes levou 4 estrelas.

Average Irish pub with average clusters of people gathering after work for a drink. Place doesn’t have anything special to offer but I wasn’t looking for anything special. Was just chilling here waiting for the restaurant that we had reserved for dinner to open up. I’ve been to this pub before on at least one occasion a couple years back and hadn’t visited just recently. Their drinks are strong and the price is fair. It’s a jeans and plaid shirt kind of place — don’t expect to have a date here or anything. Pre-gaming, however, looks like a good spot. I do wonder if they have buybacks.

I used to come here often but when my office moved out of the area now it’s more by chance if I happen to be around. I recently stopped by this past week & the place seems all the same. Decent size place, plenty of seating at the bar & towards the back as well as the lounge area upstairs. They play a good variety of music which is usually pretty loud. Prices I always found them to be decent over all, of course better during happy hour. We sat at the bar & ordered some drinks I tried some Yeungling beer on draft, great tasting beer nice & cold. My friend had a Jack & Coke, good as well these were our choices for the night. As the night went on after a few drinks we needed a little something to pick on we went with an order of fries & the calamari. Good fries can’t go wrong. The Calamari was not bad only thing is that it was over fried a bit. The only thing I really noticed to be different now as supposed to before is the social media aspect of it those big screens encourage u to write reviews, post pics etc etc not bad I mean certainly not like people don’t do any of this & it seems that if u do post on social media it will be displayed on the screens that’s fun to see. Service at the bar was nice, overall this place is not bad to hang out & get a few drinks.
