This place is great. A true mom and pop. Where Lombardi’s and Grimaldi’s and all the hispter-esqe pizza joints went wrong. Phil’s keeps it as is, if you walked in with a leisure suit on it would not surprise me. The cast of characters who frequent the pizzeria is also spectacular. It’s got sitcom comedy written all over it. The pizza is NYC pizza. If you are looking for the best ever your not going to get it. If you want to spend less then 10 bucks for a couple slices and a soda this spot is where to go. Cash only because it should be. I’m currently typing this sitting on my lunch break soaking in the ambiance of this wonder.

Best pizza! cash only unlimited hours but it’s so worth it. Way better than Joe’s or Bleecker Street

Probably one of the worst pizzas shops in NYC. If their pizza doesn’t taste like a cardboard, its burned. Never had the same pizza flavor twice. Always inconsistent but one thing they know for sure: how to make a pizza taste like a cardboard. Sorry guys. Over 40 years in business but still dont know how to make a good pizza:(

Cheap pizza tastes like its price. You’ll do much better walking over to Joe’s a short distance away. Also, unfriendly service.

Haven’t worked in this neighborhood in almost 4 years, but I do miss the slices at Phil’s and haven’t found any that are quite as good. This is as authentic and delicious as it gets! No frills.

I can’t believe I’ve never reviewed Phil’s. Been going there for years, used to live and work in the area, so it was a regular stop for me. It probably qualifies as a hidden gem, but for locals, it’s no secret. Phil’s has been around since the early 70’s, I believe, and when you walk in there, it feels like it. It wouldn’t be surprising if Johnnie Travolta or Radio Raheem walked in for a slice and a coke circa their heydays. Phil’s is old school to the bone. He and his wife man the battle stations for the most part, but occasionally their son is there, too. The familial love/tension is palpable, and it reminds me of growing up with my Italian family. This is a no frills, no B.S. slice shop. To me, it is quintessential NY thin crust pizza. What’s more, you don’t have to deal with ridiculous lines, exorbitant prices, temperamental pizzaiolos, long waits outside behind velvet ropes, or throngs of people mobbing the place. Every Monday-Friday(closed on weekends), Phil’s is open and ready to serve. I no longer live or work in the area, but if/when I find myself there during the week, there is a good chance I’m going to hit up Phil’s. You should, too.

The pizza here is passable. Nothing great, pretty typical greasy New York pizza. I had one slice of the Sicilian($ 3), which was actually rather good, then a regular cheese slice($ 2.75), which I thought was kind of average as far as New York slices go. All in all not bad, but I much prefer Bleecker street pizza 5 minutes up the road from here.

We literally stumbled upon this place after the annual Halloween parade just to grab a quick bite to eat. It was the first pizza place we saw while walking back to the car and was crowded so we thought we’d give it a shot. It looked like a mom and pop shop with the pop cranking out the pizza and the mom handling the money register and orders — like a boss. We ordered a plain slice and one with pepperoni topping($ extra) and lemonade. It was a simple pizza that really hit the spot. The melted cheese had a delicious consistency and the tomato sauce had more of a sweetness to it with a hidden tanginess. If you’re in the area I recommend trying a slice.

This is my pizza haunt during my lunch hours– this place is the definition of old school! It’s a tiny little pizzeria that seats all of about 15 people total, between 3 small tables and in the areas around the counter. It’s family owned and you’ll see the same duo behind at the helm every day. The price is right even if a tiny bit higher than what I’m used to(I still actually come here if I feel like spending money on lunch…), the pizza is pretty scrumptious and they have some deep dish option(which I’ve yet to try) which is pretty new to me.

Work around the area and I have been going to Joes mostly for pizza but since I discovered Phil’s, I’ve changed allegiances. Phil’s pizza reminds me of a time when pizzas back in brooklyn used to cost $ 1.25 with a drink. If you’re around the area, definitely drop by for a slice of true New York pizza.

So damn good! True NY pizza. In fact, it tastes VERY similar to pizza I had in Naples, Italy. Go there.

I’ve soured on Phil’s a little bit after a recent off-putting experience. Sure, the price is nice here, and the pizza is good, but I have a hard time seeing myself giving much more money to 9⁄11 Truthers. I stopped in Phil’s a few nights ago after work and a customer randomly brought up how he had recently heard that 9⁄11 was an «inside job» and how the WTC had to be rigged up with explosives or it wouldn’t have collapsed like it did. He asked if anyone had heard about that, and instead of refuting it, another customer and the people behind the counter were like«Well yeah, everyone knows that.» And then it devolved into weird conspiracy theory time, but they talked about it in a way that made it seem normal. If you truly believed that the president was responsible for 9/11, how could you just go on cutting pizzas? Shouldn’t you be marching in the streets, or at least seem angry, instead of showing the same level of mild upset-ness as you would if your favorite team lost a game in the regular season?

This little gem, hidden in the heart of the West Village is pizza at its best. Stopped by for a few minutes the other day and had a nice time talking to the owner and understanding his shop. He’s been around for over 40 years and without a doubt knows how to make a great pizza. Go with a classic cheese slice! Vintage and always fresh I recommend, if you’re in the area, or not in the area, come to Phil’s Pizza :)

Phil’s pizza was a perfect stop for us after buying chocolate from Jacques Torres right down the street. The pizza was good, but I’m a fan of the really thin crust and this was a bit thicker. I think this pizza’s a real treat for most, but I’m still searching for thinner crust. Another down side of Phil’s is no bathroom. You have to go down the street to the macdonalds.

Pizza was so good it made me nostalgic and I got all emotional. First delicious bite of my extra cheese slice made me sniffle and have a fuzzy flashback. Phil’s looks and feels like a scene from my childhood circa 1984 when my grandmother bought me my first slice of pizza and then I wanted pizza everyday. My slice was hot enough to burn the insides of my cheeks(awesome) and saucy and gooey with mozzarella leaving a stringy cheese trail dangling in the air when I bit into it(more awesome.) I had to shake the owner Tony’s hand when I was done. Real pizza made by real Italian American owners and not the help. Phil’s does pizza the way it should be done.

I’m on board with the other Unilocalers that reviewed Phil’s, thank goodness for an old school style pizzeria. A stop into Phil’s will take anyone back to their childhood if they grew up in New York circa 1970s-1980s. And I loved the photo montage they had up of the pizza shop throughout the years; big ups to Phil for the 1914 photo of Varrick St as well as the photo of himself in all his early ‘80s glory wearing cut-off running shorts. I really do wish all pizzerias still looked like Phils. On to the goods, I had a grandma slice and a can of soda for $ 4.25. The slice was pretty big and it was tasty. I will be back to try the regular slice soon.

I love this place. It’s a real pizza joint with a fair($ 2.50) price for a plain slice, fixins in jelly jars with holes punched out of the lids, and quick pleasant service. Crust is thin and has just the right amount of chewy to crispy. I’m a loyal fan, cause they do it right. It also makes me happy to know they’ve been in that spot for 40 years. Pretty awesome.

A real NYC pizzeria, a dying breed in these hipster times. Phil knows how to make a pizza and the delivery guy is the cat’s meow.

«you want the last slice bro?» «huh?» “I said, you want the last slice?” «…you’re joking right?» «no, we’re closing for vacation… you want the last slice or not?» «yeah, fuck it, count me in.» «good choice my man. MA, WECANCLOSENOW.» while a softer Unilocaler(anyone from outside of the NYC metro area) would’ve been turned off by this and written a prissy, whiny review: «OHMYGAWDTHEYWERESORUDE»…I was overjoyed to find this remnant, a holdout, of authentic New York pizza. you know, the ones with the dimly-lit-menu that hasn’t changed since 1983(except the prices). it was not the best pizza I’ve had, but your quintessential New York slice: crisp, not too thin, a little charcoal on the bottom, and the perfect sauce-to-cheese ratio. I was happily munching it while walking towards Pier 40 with the sun shining on me. none of that hippie pizza stuff like«tofu/organic pineapple» or «Nutella/jellybean/mango»…you got plain, sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, peppers, and the rest of the usual suspects. a plain slice is $ 2.50 also, the quasi-argument the guy got into with his mother was pretty much exactly like how I talk to my mom. I felt right at home. you other kids with Italian mothers know EXACTLY what I mean. my bro Phil H will be glad to know his name adorns this fine establishment.

I’ve had Phil’s a few times in the past, and for the most part wasn’t too impressed. That said, a group of us ordered delivery from them since they had the best deal and my feelings towards them started to change! For one, they MUST have been pulling out a fresh pie when I called, and decided to just send that one over. It was here(my office about 5 blocks away) in seriously 10 minutes. The slices definitely tasted better than I remembered, so I greedily wolfed down 3 of them. Yep, that happened. All in all, though good, the pizza is still just like this review. Not great, but 3-Stars A-Ok.
