NOLONGERKOSHER, Ozu now serves shrimp, thereby lessening the number of customers.

This place is what it advertises: Healthy, macrobiotic food. But I was pretty disappointed. My friend ordered a special(ramen) and it was wonderful, but I got the coconut curry with udon and it was the least appetizing food I’ve ever had served to me in NYC. The«udon» was basically fettuccine — super flat and not chewy at all. The curry sauce was nice, but tasted like a soup I’d buy at trader joes — nothing special. The presentation was laughably bad, with the pasta, curry, and three small pieces of vegetables set out all separate from each other on the plate. The best part of my meal was an avocado roll I split with my friend, but unfortunately it cost over twice what it should have.

Service was terrible even though there was no one else in the restaurant. We asked for extra plates twice and they never brought them. We ended up using napkins from the table next to us. Food was just ok, pretty bland. Not somewhere I’m dying to come back to since NYC is full of delicious food. The tempura we had was a little doughy and this was made worse by the flavorless dipping sauce it came with. Croquettes suffered from the same problem, crispy but lacking flavor. The creamy dipping sauce also needed some oomph in the flavor department. They need to step up their game seasoning-wise and offer more original selections. I wanted to like this place but was pretty disappointed.

I ordered the coconut curry tofu and it was delicious! Very flavorful, warm and filling. The tofu was not deep fried, which was also a plus. We also started with an order of the steamed seitan dumplings, which came with a delicious type of soy sauce mixture and steamed kale. Overall it was a good experience, but I had to give it 4 stars because the draft in the restaurant was significant and we were chilly the entire time.

I had their October special, which is cash only. It’s a broiled wild Chilean seabass fillet served with a choice of sauce(Sesame Ginger, Teriyaki, or Miso sauce). It comes either with a salad or root vegetables(steamed carrots, yams, and kabocha) and brown rice. Now, I feel like I have to redo all my other Unilocal ratings because I would give 6 stars to this dish. The seabass was very good. The miso sauce is salty but the fish was tender. The root vegetables are sweet and soft. It’s a simple dish, but the ingredients are well cooked. It’s one of those days where I feel blessed for having a heavenly meal. :D I was tempted by the salmon roll but the waiter told me that would be too much food. And he was right, I was full after having the lunch special. At the table, there is a note saying that if you post a picture of your meal on Facebook, or a review on Unilocal and show it to the restaurant, you can get a free dessert.

This restaurant stands out primarily for its supremely healthy twist on otherwise staple Japanese entrees. Menu items, which are rather comprehensive, detail the healthy blend of vegetables used, which you would not typically see served up at most restaurants. This is one of those places you must go to to experience for yourself. If you’re looking for a place to dine healthily — this should be the default little hole in the wall place you should be going to. Quiet environment and sparse seating — which makes for a venue great for intimate chats and long talks.

Love the salmon dumpling special they recently had. I have been coming here for years and it’s one of my favorite restaurants for healthy delicious eating.

So much variety for healthier options. I loved the options that were simple and clean. although some might find it bland. Relaxing environment. On the pricier side.

I dined here once with friends a couple years ago and we enjoyed a really good meal. I recently dined again with a friend and we also enjoyed our meal. The service is friendly, the ambiance is nice, and the food is good. I especially love the adorable wheeled-benches and tables up front. Most recently, I had the vegetarian sampler platter, with hummus, baba ganouj, tabouleh, and a couple other tomato/veggie pates. It was tasty, but way over priced at $ 26(it was worth maybe $ 16 – 18). In general, it seemed a bit overpriced, and it was a bit awkward only having one bathroom(one stall) for the entire restaurant, right in the middle of the dining room, so there was often a line right through the main walking area and bar.

I’ve been coming here for years and I’m never disappointed. This is a comfortable and low key spot to get super healthy macrobiotic Japanese food. The food is hearty and simple with good portions, though sometimes bland depending on what you order. I always go for the salmon dinner box, which comes with soup and three appetizers. I don’t recommend getting dessert here though. Most of the desserts are made with some kind of almond cream that I really don’t care for.

I don’t know what has happened to this place but things have really changed — and not for the better! I’ve been eating at Ozu since it opened in 1988 and can’t say enough about how good it used to be. I hadn’t been in several months but my recent experience was anything but. I ordered what I have gotten for many years and was told they would have to charge me for a substitution of greens. The salmon was good but was about half the portion it used to be. When the check came, the waiter had charged us for the brown rice which was supposed to be included with the meal and then argued with me when I pointed this out on the menu! And the place was dirty with sticky tables. Unfortunately that was the last time I will ever go there. SO disappointed.

We went on a Friday night and it was literally empty, which sometimes worries me, but if you have a food intolerance this is your spot. When I was in The City with my gluten free friend we found more than enough options for both of us. In fact we found so many options we decided to eat family style, which I highly recommend. I also recommend everything we ordered: Cold Peanut Soba Noodles, Thai Noodles, Fried Veggie Dumplings, and the Avocado Cucumber Roll.

Was in the neighborhood and thought I would try something new on the UWS. They offer GF choices and lots of vegan items including their macrobiotic option. If not familiar, this could be bland on the taste buds. If you’re like me with the sweet tooth, they offer GF all natural desserts with no refined sugar. The only thing is almost all desserts are with soy products. I tried the pecan slice and is sweetened with apple juice and dates filling. Would have been perfect with a vegan ice cream but hey by itself was good enough.

What a fantastic place. This was a new place for me that I tried and in all honesty, I thought I wouldn’t like it because of the kind of place they are. They aren’t meat nor are they dairy. What they are is Vegetarian but a different kind. Their menu is based off Macrobiotic Living which is deigned to lead a better and healthier lifestyle. There’s a science behind it(Google it if you’re interested) Anyway, most of the stuff I didn’t know what it was so thankfully the person I was with did and explained it all to me. When the food comes out you are given nothing but chopsticks which sadly, I never figured out how to use. I went over asking for silverware explaining why and they were super courteous about it. The food was filling, tasty and not to sweet or spicy. This place isn’t for everybody and as far as I know the only place in NYC so if you want to go, I highly recommend.

I love this place so much. It’s healthy to the max because everything is steamed or lightly sautéed and minimal to no salt or oil is used. The food is also delicious of course. The only thing is the price. It’s pretty high for a lunch special, but you do get a lot of food.

Had dinner here on this week. Menu is listed as Gluten Free Friendly. Half of the menu items are marked GF, so you can ask for them to be prepared gluten free. This is a complete joke. What they mean by prepared gluten free is prepared plain(unseasoned). They don’t have any seasonings and/or sauces(other than salt, pepper, or garlic) that they use on dishes they prepare gluten free. So you basically getting a completely plain meal, which is something you can get at any restaurant. It is frustrating and dishonest of restaurants to advertise as being GF when they are really not. Its a horrible marketing ploy. If a restaurant is going to market themselves as preparing GF items, then they should be able to provide flavorful food, not just make all their dishes without seasonings.
