There are few places you can go in NYC to check out photography in an intimate setting, browse photography books and even buy an iconic photo for your wall. That place is the Morrison Hotel Gallery. Forced upstairs from its Prince Street-level location after the building was sold, the gallery has maintained its quiet elegance, and while upstairs, is welcoming of all. Whether you are a collector, a one-time buyer or a browser, you are welcome here. The gallery, named for the iconic Doors album, which was shot by co-owner Henry Diltz(yes, you can buy a signed copy of the photo), is best known for its extensive collection of rock & roll photography. It represents the photographers that have chronicled the rise of popular music since the 1950s. It also has Hollywood and sports photography. But, at its heart, it is all about the music. Whether the photographer is Graham Nash(yes! that Graham Nash!) or Pattie Boyd(who Eric Clapton wrote ‘Layla’ for) or Joel Brodsky(who took the iconic photos of Jim Morrison) or the subject is Woodstock(Henry Diltz was the official photographer), Lalapalooza, Laurel Canyon in the ‘70s, a specific album cover, a concert or an artist, you are sure to find what you’re looking for here. The photos are very reasonable, and they’re often available in multiple sizes and both in open or limited editions. Hit the buzzer for 116 Prince & go upstairs to get lost in the art of photography for a few minutes or an hour. Browse the books, which will likely spur memories. Ask for help, because what is on their walls is just a wee sampling of what they have & who they represent. These photographers were witnesses to history, and it is so cool to see it from their perspective. The stories behind the photos are priceless, so be sure to ask someone from the gallery about how the shots were captured!
