PROS: — Fried Chicken & Kimchi Ciabbata Roll — $ 7(SM) — best sandwich out of the 2 I tried. It’s very filling and a tad spicy. It’s a little messy eating this. — Pigs on Toast -$ 8 Delicious but messy eating this. the sunny side egg just popped when I bit into it. Another problem was they burnt my toast =(. If the toast wasn’t burnt it’d have been perfect THEOKAY: — Beer Battered Fish — $ 7.25(SM) — it was alright. Fish was soft and fell apart easily. Not as filling as Fried Chicken & Kimchi — Roasted Kale & Corn(side) — ehh it was ok. Very cheesy via cotija cheese. — French Fries — ehhh. It was kinda soggy and it wasn’t crispy/crunchy the way I like it. CONS: — they take a long time to make your order 20 — 30min. I would suggest you order online and pick it up instead. Shoutout to Allie for introducing me to Mook’s and informing me that they deliver via Eat24. I opted to take a brief stroll from our office over to this cozy little hideaway on the north side of 23rd St. to scope out their vaunted fried chicken and kimchi sandwich. At a mere $ 7, it’s a steal. So affordable, in fact, that I talked myself into feeling deserving of a side of potato wedges. I’d cut out coffee in favor of homemade green smoothies all week long, after all. I’m sure my wait for food wasn’t terribly long. No more than ten minutes, by my guess. But it sure felt a lot longer as I hunched in on myself and rubbed my arms to try and stay warm against the blast of the extreme air conditioning. Be warned — if you’re visiting on a warm summery day, bring a parka. Once I escaped back out into the life-giving sunlight and above-60 degree ambient air with my prize, all was forgiven. I ate the hell out of my meal. Ever had a Wendy’s spicy fried chicken sandwich? Imagine that, but with the spicy on the outside of the chicken… in the form of crunchy, mildly vinegary cabbage. And chicken that actually looks like a cutlet that someone’s properly battered and hand-sliced. I mean –legit– food. And those potato wedges? A full styrofoam cup lined with a paper napkin of the crisp, starchy things — and a take-out tub of ketchup to boot. They’ve thought of everything here. I’m shocked that it took an out-of-towner to educate me on the existence of Mook’s, but now that it’s in my lunch repertoire, I’ll definitely be back to try other menu items.

My friend just introduced me to this sandwich shop and if I lived or worked nearby, you know I’d be there VERYOFTEN. It’s a great place for tasty and flavorful sandwiches. Keep in mind it’s not a big place so there’s limited seating – a few tables and some stools on the side. I ordered the Kimchi and Chix sandwich. It’s a fried chicken filet with a layer of kimchi on top. The kimchi has a bit of a kick, but I enjoyed that. Also, I’m not the biggest fan of kimchi because it’s sour but this kimchi didn’t have the same sour taste that I’m used to. Definitely a great sandwich to have. My friend ordered the beer battered fish sandwich and I had a bite. Imagine just a fried fish filet(akin to the kind you get when you order fish and chips) in a sandwich. Pretty good and pretty fried. I still prefer the Kimchi and Chix sandwich, but still a good choice. Can’t wait to try out all the other options! Keep in mind there are specials everyday, but they do run out. When I went they had a fried bolognese sandwich – sold out.

Not to be confused with Massive Open Online Courses, this is Mook’s. Upon pickup the guy at the counter was so overwhelmed just by me walking in the door that I was sure they had no record of it, but fortunately they did. It’s a shame you cannot GET a half-size for $ 5(the smalls are $ 7+), you can only ADD a «half-size» for $ 5(i.e., upgrade from a regular to a large for $ 12 rather than $ 7)…at least not on Seamless, where the PBLT is also discontinued? Totally forgot to redeem the free iced tea with a Unilocal checkin special; there’s also a student discount apparently. Went with the much-lauded Fried Chicken and Kimchi(Small) — chicken was satisfying… as for the ‘kimchi’ — I’m not Korean, but I’m fairly certain this is just some heavily sauced cabbage. Good portion for the price, and I’m a huge sandwich person, but really don’t see a reason to head back even with their way too complex(and uncommon) Flocktag Rewards program. Fried Chicken and Kimchi(Small) 1 + 10.50 Delete Make it: Sandwich Add Extra: Fried Potato Wedges($ 3.50 Extra)

Yummy in my tummy! The place itself is like a hole in the wall. I was pleasantly surprised with their gourmet sandwiches. Food: I had the chix kimchi sandwich and my friend had the pblt(pork belly) sandwich. Both were equally delicious in their own right. The chix Kimchi was crunchy and had a nice kick. The pblt was super tender and had a substantial amount of fat, but let’s face it… fat is the best part(which I will continue to try to work off later). I’m a huge fan of fries and this place knows what it’s doing. It had the right amount of crunch and flavored with Parmesean cheese and parsley… mmmmm The ice tea is unsweetened, so of course I put 3000 packets of sugar in it and it was much better: p Customer service was cool Gives discounts to students– always a plus! Plus the sandwiches themselves are usually around 7 – 8.I order a small and i walked out pretty full/fat. Con: They had a lot of sold out items that I wudve liked to order, but there’s always next time! Fun fact: It’s called Mooks bc it’s the owners nickname… I asked Mook himself hehe

I’ve been wanting to try this little sandwich shop for a while. It’s a narrow space with limited seating, so best to come on the early side before the lunch rush if you want to dine in. They also take a fair amount of time to make each sandwich, so it may not be the quickest meal. The menu has a lot of delicious-sounding sandwiches. I got the miso braised beef small sandwich. Size wise, a small is actually a decent sandwich size. The large sandwich is quite huge and too much food unless you’re starving. The miso braised beef was juicy but very messy, dripping with sauce and coconut milk slaw. The ingredients were nice but the beef was way too salty for my taste. I wouldn’t order this again when there’s so many other nice options. I also tried a little of the fried chicken and kimchi sandwich and it was really good. Based on the chalkboard menu in the back, they have a selection of ice cream as well. PS — Free iced tea for checking in on Unilocal

When I first came here I was shocked. I ordered the beer battered fish sandwich and it was very good. For around $ 7 this sandwich sure packed a lot of flavor. The fish fillet was nice and thick, the batter was crisp and the coleslaw and pickle complemented the sandwich very well. I’m surprised there aren’t any more people coming in and out of this place. Overall the prices are very fair for the portions they serve. Around $ 7 for small sandwiches(which aren’t very small) and around $ 10 for large sandwiches. Definitely check this place out when you’re around Park Ave.

Cute sandwich spot in Gramercy near SVA. Love their décor(pirate-ish themed wallpaper). They have a bunch of great sounding sandwiches. Judging by their signage, they’re known for their fried chicken, so I had to go with that. They offer two sizes. I asked the guy at the counter how big they were, and I think he severely underestimated the bread because the large was a gigantic sandwich. The bread was pretty wide, and each half was basically a square, the size of a small burger bun. But anyway, the fried chicken sandwich was gooood. They don’t call it a banh mi, but I could see it as a fried chicken banh mi. But instead of traditional pickled vegetables, they use kimchi. The Panko breaded chicken was crispy and moist. I would eat one of those chicken cutlets by itself. I also tried the miso braised beef short rib sandwich, but that was really salty. All in all, for lunch it’s a nice spot for dining in if you can snag a table. A little pricey for the large, but it’s a TON of food. Also got a free iced tea for checking in on Unilocal

I am not a sandwich person. There’s too many things you can put in them and I can’t decide. When I’m hungry and looking for something to eat, a sandwich will probably be the last thing that comes to my mind. UNTILNOW. I’m hooked on Mook’s. I love the unique combination of ingredients that they use in their sandwiches — it creates flavors that I’ve never experienced before. Favorites things: Beer Battered Fish — the fish is always piping hot and crispy, comes with tomato, onion, cabbage, and chipotle spice. Miso Braised Beef — this one is spicy and so flavorful. It’s short rib and coconut milk coleslaw. If that doesn’t sound amazing, something is wrong with you. Fried potatoe wedges — was expecting these to be normal wedges, but i’m learning that nothing here is just normal. They are cooked well, and the seasoning takes it over the top. Even their ice coffee is good — instead of normal ice cubes, they come with coffee ice cubes so that it won’t be watered down after 10 minutes. Service is good as well but they could work on their speed. Wait time is often 10 – 15 minutes even when it’s not busy, but they’ve gotten better at it. The place can be awkwardly quiet sometimes so some music would be appreciated. Definitely get the 10% discount if you’re a student because the sandwiches can be pricey. Other than that, this place is innovative and I will definitely continue to come here. This place is great for those who are craving a good hearty sandwich but also for sandwich-haters like myself. Thank you, Mook!

My favorite thing to order here is the P.B.L.T. It really hits the spot and tastes amazing for the price! Their Grilled Veggie Tofu sandwich was SOO flavorful! The texture of the tofu was perfect too; it was nice and tender without being too mushy :) I’ve also had the Fired Chicken and Kimchi sandwich, although to be honest, I wasn’t too impressed with it. It was good, yes, but of the three sandwiches I’ve had so far, it’s my least favorite(although compared to the other two sandwiches I’ve had, this isn’t a bad thing by any means lol). I want to try the Beer Battered Fish Sandwich next! The cashier said it was by far his favorite sandwich that they serve.

P.B.L.T. — In love with this sandwich! It was just pure deliciousness! No other words needed to describe it. Iced Tea — A tad bit bland but it’s free so I’m not complaining. Experience — Students get 10% off with student ID. — Check in and get a free iced tea. — Make sure to check the board in the front for their special. — Not crowded. — Just a chill place to sit down and eat. — The only thing I don’t like is that the boards are not together. Sometimes you walk in and totally forget about the board in the front. — Otherwise, this place is just pure awesomeness.

Was not at the location, ordered online. Online transaction was easy and was delivered in estimated time. I ordered a miso braised beef sandwich and roasted kale and corn. The sandwich was really good! You can definitely taste the Korean tang in the sandwich– so tasty! Tons of sauce and lots of meat. It was pretty large even though I ordered a small. Perfect to break up for two meals. The roasted kale and corn was the ‘side’ and a very large portion. Very good and had onions with spicy sauce.

I love their Roasted Kale Salad; it is friggen delicious. However, on the ~10 times I have ordered it, it takes 20 – 30 minutes to make for to-go. The salad is roasted kale, pickled onions and mushooms, quinoa and the dressing tastes fish sauce based. For an extra $ 2 you can get chicken on it. It totals out for $ 13 for a small but amazing $ 13 dollar salad. I give it the 3 stars because of the time and cost, which both exceed what I usually have to work with at lunch. If you can go beyond those two things… try the kimchi + fried chicken sandwich, it is delicious!

Get in here immediately!!! This is the best restaurant in the area! Mook’s elevate simples sandwiches to ANOTHERLEVEL. When I went to Mook’s and decided to go simple and get the Ham and Cheese sandwich. I didn’t expect much but when I took the first bite out of the sandwich… I teared about from how amazing it was. Every part of the sandwich worked in harmony, like Fred and Ginger. I can’t explain how amazing this place is :). Just go and experience it for yourself :)

Best freakin’ discovery in Manhattan in a very long time! Mook’s, you’re fantastic. During a 2 week training stint in the city, I was inexplicably excited at all my lunch options. Trusty old Unilocal didn’t steer me wrong the entire time, but it absolutely hit the money when Mook’s was a top result. «Huh! 4 ½ stars? I’ve got to check this out.» The place was so ridiculously new when I first visited that even the cashier mentioned it was her first day and didn’t get to try all the menu items yet. Still, I asked her opinion on what to order and everyone seemed to love the Beer Battered Fish sandwich. Psh, I’ll take it. This sandwich was so damn good I stared at it between bites, mesmerized at its tenderness and flavor. After taking my first bite, I’m pretty sure the heavens opened up and cherubs flew out saying, «This. This, dear Daphne, is what a beer battered fish sandwich was meant to be.» And then flew away strumming harps. Who knows, I wasn’t paying attention to anything else that was happening, I was so preoccupied with eating this piece of impressive perfection. Despite advertising that there’s a jalapeño aspect to it, it’s not overly spicy. I can’t handle spice and would have noticed otherwise, but the flavor of the pepper was there in the background without too much of the heat. Also, despite being a coleslaw h8r, the cabbage/chipotle combo that topped the fish couldn’t have been better. Totally balanced with flavor, texture, acidity, etc. I’m pretty sure this sandwich could have won on an episode of Iron Chef. I’ve been back a second time for this new favorite of mine, and it was still just as good. Just keep in mind that between the fried fish and sauces, this sandwich can get a bit greasy. The sandwiches come in different sizes, but a small is sure to satisfy a hungry lunch goer. The combination of incredible food, friendly staff, and speedy service is enough reason to give Mook’s 5 stars. NOTE: Don’t forget to get the Unilocal check-in deal of a free unsweetened iced tea! I’m pretty sure it’s normally $ 3, so be sure to snag one.

The first fusion sandwich shop I’ve actually enjoyed. Half of Smorgasburg is sandwich shops that are making small Asian and Latin twists to an American favorite. I can finally say I’ve finally purchased a sandwich that fits this bill that I didn’t regret paying for. Mook’s fried chicken kimchi sandwich is so tasty, incorporates an appropriate amount of Asian influences, and I would order it on another occasion. We grabbed our sandwiches to stay and our wait was the only downside of our visit. It took about 15 minutes for them to prepare our meal, although everything was hot and neatly presented. The first bite was everything: juicy, meaty, spicy, sour, crunchy, crispy, substantial, delicious. All these words were filling my head, and I savored every single bite to the end. My coworker got the potato wedges to make his lunch a combo. The fries were so delicious, meaty, well-seasoned, and not too oily. However, I don’t think I’d buy them on their own, as $ 5 for that portion size is just not worth it. Make sure to check in for a free iced tea! The fruity and fragrant drink made for a great pairing with the food.

Cozy and pleasant nook in the neighborhood. It’s a good walk from my office, but it was well worth it! I had the small PBLT(pork belly, lettuce, tomatillo) and a side of potato wedges. $ 7 for a small sandwich is a great great deal. Plus, I got a free iced tea(unsweetend! yes!) with my check-in so that was a pleasant surprise. $ 13 if you want the large, but that’s probably good for 2 to share or for one big hungry dude: P PBLT — may I just say the bread is fantastic! perfectly toasted so that it wasn’t overly crispy nor overly soggy by the sauce and pickled veggies. the small sandwich gets you 2 decently sized slabs of PB! POTATOWEDGES — crispy on the outside, piping hot on the inside. well seasoned and the spicy mayo dipping sauce was a perfect complement. Looking forward to many more lunches there … must try the fried chicken & kimchi sandwich, beer battered fish sandwich, as well as their sides! YUM!

I’ve been trying to diversify my lunch options and I am so thrilled that I tried Mook’s yesterday. Though unassuming from the outside, the sandwiches are tasty and sizable. I was in the mood for something a little tangy so I ordered the Fried Chicken and Kimchi sandwich. The bread was light, crusty and well baked. The panko-crusted chicken was moist and not terribly greasy(not that I’m against some extra fat). That sauce was fantastic — a little on the side of spicy. I’ll 100% honest that the sauce made the scallion salad and lettuce coulis pretty indistinguishable. That said, they provided a nice crunch. It was a fairly large meal, but I didn’t feel like I was knocked out for the rest of the afternoon. What a wonderful establishment!

Extremely unique sandwich place if you’re looking for a good slab of meat in between bread. You will really enjoy this place if you also have a tongue for spices. My boyfriend and I tried the beer battered fish sandwich and the kimchi fried chicken sandwich. Both were excellent — so tasty, it’ll have you craving for more. Ingredients are fresh and the meat is nice and crunchy on the outside with a soft center. So yummy and bursting with flavor. As for their service — quick and friendly. Atmosphere is also nice and clean, they clean the tables immediately upon a party’s departure and hand sanny is always available. I love the environment too — decorated with mirrors, chalkboard, and map wallpaper, it’s very nice for a small group of maybe 4 at most. Also, I’ve heard they have burgers… I will probably be back for burgahs! Only one star off because the sandwiches are kinda expensive — $ 12 for a sandwich that is flavorful, but does not offer extremely unique ingredients(chicken, kimchi, fish, veggies are all relatively cheap). But honestly, an awesome sandwich shop!

Visited this place during lunch hours today expecting a crowd. Well, it was quite empty which is not a bad thing if you know anything about how crowded lunch places get during lunch. The wait was like 10 min which made me wonder how much longer will they take when its crowded. The Asian dude behind the counter was very polite. He honoured the free ice tea with Unilocal check in offer. The kimchi on the sandwich is more like cabbage dipped in red hot sauce and mayonnaise, which wasn’t a bad thing. The fried chicken was so crispy on the outside, juicy inside and tasty. Well done guys! Potato wedges didn’t live up to the expectations I had. What I like here: — decent sandwich — friendly service — not crowded during lunch hours(at least not yet) What I don’t like: — small place
