I’m giving this a proud, completely non-hesitant three stars. Proud, I say, even though I cry at night thinking about the joys of and how much I miss El Castillito Taqueria.(Honestly, I just got swept up in a five minute reverie just thinking about my favorite San Francisco taquerias. Truly tragic.) I ain’t going to lie to you – these burritos aren’t great. They use white rice. ‘nough said. Buuut… these burritos aren’t insulting. Think of them like the type of burritos you may have made at home when you were in eighth grade, had no idea how to cook, no parents at home, and a fridge full of leftovers. Totally decent, right? Not great, but decent. And under 5 bucks for decency and a good cause? In Morningside Heights, the mini-mecca of overpriced bad food? I’m so tired of «Mexican» restaurants on this island that charge and arm and a leg for indecipherable slops of food masquerading as «mexican.» I actually got in a conversation here once with someone who told me that my problem was that I should have ordered a CHEESE quesadilla instead of JUST a quesadilla. I had to hold back tears. So Local Flavor, in sum: Leftover style burritos made with white rice and without pretensions. Win some lose some, right?

LFBS is quick and cheap. Burrito is not great, not bad. Not authentic, nor gourmet. Just a big burrito. Sometimes it’s nice to know that you’re helping out the community simply by eating lunch.(FYI, profits go to BCI, a soup kitchen, shelter and advocacy org for poor and homeless in NYC.)

eat here if you are more interested in supporting a good cause than in eating a burrito. I had my first burrito here since moving back from California and it practically made me cry with frustration and disgust. This is not a tasty burrito, my friends. the rice in a good burrito is seasoned. this is like minute rice. it is true that they are not messing around with the hot sauce. I really wish they had honored my request to put only a little bit on, instead of squirting such a vast quantity that my mouth burned for hours. I’m for supporting local charities, which is why Local Flavor gets an extra star. but if you’ve ever had a real burrito made by someone from a burrito-loving culture, this place will make you want to poke your eyes out.

Hot damn. I’d heard rumor of this burrito venture and since I like to support local charities and I find Broadway Community Inc. to be a fabulous charity, when I saw Joshua G.‘s review spelling out the situation for me, I had to go. I’ve only had the Steak and Bean & Cheese burritos, but they were very good. Watch out for the hot sauce, because they are not playing around. Three stars for the burritos and an added star because it supports a good cause.

I just had lunch at this great little burrito shop. It’s a great way to have a tasty & cheap lunch and give back to the community. It’s located in the Broadway Presbyterian Church and only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am-3pm. They serve very good and inexpensive burritos. Steak = $ 6 Chicken = $ 5 Veggie = $ 4 Bean & Cheese = $ 3 All profits go to Broadway Community Inc., a soup kitchen, shelter and advocacy organization for homeless and other members of the community. If you live or work on the UWS near Broadway and 114th street… CHECKITOUT!!! Here are some articles about it:
