I’ve been going here for the past 10 years with my entire family. Anderson is perhaps one of the best stylists in New York, my 3 teenage sons won’t let another barber come close to touching their hair. Everyone is very nice and pleasant, and I genuinely consider all the stylists experienced, dedicated, and very knowledgeable.

I’ve been going to Harold Melvin’s salon for about four or five years, now — ever since my stylist, Renee(Renee’s Hair Designs), to whom I’ve been going for nearly 10 years, moved there. I have always been extremely happy with the service that I receive, and I regularly receive compliments on my hair. Renee is professional and patient, and fully understands how sensitive women(and men) are about their hair. She takes the time to make recommendations while hearing exactly what the client wants and needs. She understands that hair-care is not just about a great style but also about taking care of you hair — keeping it healthy. I highly recommend her services.

I’ve been going to Harold Melvin’s intermittently since the 1970’s. Through the years I’ve had several different stylist. Some left and went other places. I find Mr. Melvin’s shop to be decent, clean, and the prices are reasonable. They stylist are professional. At this time the stylist I use is Dell. I find her work to be good. In my opinion, her strength is in hair coloring. She is a great colorist. Mr. Harold Melvin runs a good, decent, clean shop. Look up and you’ll see them right there on 72nd. St.

OK. It took me a while to write this review because I was extremely heated after my experience here and couldn’t bear to talk about it for a while. I must say, in Virginia it took me years and many failures and wrong turns to find a black salon(or at least one that had some stylists that catered to black hair) that was professional in service, experience and atmosphere. Sadly, I never really did until right before I moved. So in NYC I had to start all over again, and I FAILED at Harold Melvin’s. I choose this place from the Unilocal reviews because they weren’t too terrible and I was at the end of my exhausting search of reputable black salons that didn’t cost me $ 300 minimum for a full sew in(not including hair). I called up HM and I spoke with a woman named Dell who said she had been doing sew ins for years and could do mine for $ 175. I was like, great. NO. Not great. As soon as i arrived in the salon there were a couple of tell tale signs that this was a baaaaaad idea and I should have GTFO. 1.) The place was very poorly lit with gray walls and it looked like 1992 in there 2.) All the staff was 40 and up it seemed. 3.) This Dell woman was like 65. Now, I’m not hating on senior citizens, but I can’t see a woman of her age giving me an up-to-date style. 4.) Her station was extremely cluttered to the point where I couldn’t see myself in the mirror when I sat down. WHY didn’t I leave??? I’m still asking myself that. Shame, shame on me. So after telling her my hair history and explaining what I wanted I let her get to work. Long story short — ITWASANEPICDISASTER. She piled the weave in a weird maze that left it very high at the top. The«side part» was very messy and strange. But the cutting is what finally made me realize the huge mistake I made. She started cutting my hair like one would cut fabric. Straight across and blunt. I immediately was like, «thank you, but I will get this cut somewhere else,» and I got the hell out of there. The ironic thing is that I tried so hard not to spent $ 300 on a full sew in, but in the end I spent a total of $ 425 on her botched job, the hair itself and an amazing cut at Mario Diab to make me look somewhat normal. I can’t speak to their other services but please, do not, DONOT, go here if you want a full weave. I learned my lesson. 0 stars for Dell.

Set to have the perfect New Year’s Eve except for the fact that I needed a hair cut. I was torn between Jerome or a generic hair cut place further down. I figured I could take a chance on a wash and set, and cut with Jerome since he was only a few blocks away. Luck was on my side that day! Jerome is very knowledgable about black hair. Even though i told him I was there for a quick set, he took the time to examine my hair and recommend things I could do to improve it’s health. My hair turned out amazing; it had body, shine, everything I wanted. The salon itself is obviously old but it didn’t feel gross to me. There were other salon stations that were empty due to the holiday, although Jerome said it could get pretty busy at times. I highly recommend you go to Jerome’s station, you won’t be disappointed! I will definitely give him a call when it’s time for my relaxer.

A friend recommend this place to me under a specific stylist — Melissa. Unfortunately, the recommendation did not live up to my reality. I found Melissa to be punctual and efficient in her work but beyond this, I am hard pressed to say anything more positive about her service as she was so focused on being efficient that she failed to provide me good service. I’d had my hair in braids for 4 years so coming in for a service(a texturizer) was a big deal. She seemed insensitive to this, rushing me through, seemingly more interested in keeping to schedule vs ensuring I was comfortable with all that was happening. While I appreciate her diligent management of time, I would have equally appreciated being treated as a customer vs just another body in her chair. When she went to trim(a service I requested), she immediately became annoyed as I hesitated on the amount she felt was«needed» to trim(the amount was more of a cut vs a trim!!). I would think that a professional would understand my hesitation considering it was a first meeting, a new service in 4 years and a big cut. But more, I’d expect a business person would appreciate the importance of repeat visits. In the end, I trusted my gut, as she didn’t seem at all interested in taking care of me. I decided to «cut the service short» and not proceed further. I paid her for the texturizer, even tipped(I couldn’t shed my good manners!), put back on my hat and left. A few days later, I found another salon/stylist who immediately noted that the texturizer had not been evenly distributed(OMG!!), who gave me a good wash, condition, trim and do and who made me super comfortable in her chair. The new stylist worked efficiently such that I was in and out quickly but yet didn’t feel rushed. I wish I trusted my gut earlier in the service or better yet, I wish I had first sat down with Melissa so I would have known she was not for me.

My stylist Riqui has been doing my locs for over 3 years. I usually get my hair done by her in Brooklyn but now she is here full time I will definitely take the trip uptown. Everyone is so friendly and Mr. Melvin is so funny. Check out Riqui and her Riqui loc system there at the salon.

I’ve been getting my hair done here since I was in Middle School and I’m now 24. Harold Melvin Beauty Salon is a lovely black owned salon located on the Upper West Side. The location is right off of Broadway. The location is great there are always things to do around here. The salon is full service. There are different stylists here that specialize in many things. However, all of them have a full grasp on the different hair procedures. Now, I’m not that adventurous so I usually just do the normal wash & blowout. However, I’ve seen some amazing hair done here. Weaves, braids, expert coloring. The staff here is super friendly and everyone gets to know you, once you become a regular. Can be a bit pricey depending on what you’re getting done. All in all just a lovely salon.
