I read the reviews before calling for a consultation and have to say I was surprised at some negative comments because I had my hair done by Renee when she was in her old location. The change is good for her because she needed more space but I’ve never had a problem getting my hair done. After some discussions I decided to get tree braids today and i am completely satisfied with Renee’s work. I’ve had a lot of personal issues and Renee has always been patient and totally professional, which I can’t say for some other salons I’ve had to endure. She answered my questions, tried to accommodate my schedule and was very supportive. She even offered alternatives that might have been more in my limited price range. Weaves, braiding takes time and it’s best to try to schedule early, which is what i did. She even told me how to care for my new style, what products to use and to call if I had any problems. I’m sorry but based on my past experiences this is not the norm. Many salons only care about closing the deal, getting paid and don’t care about your issues. To consider re-visiting any salon I take into consideration whether they can perform the service I’m looking for(not just say that they can), whether I feel pressured or rushed(which I don’t like) of course the cost and the personality of the stylist. I’ve had to sit through sessions with rude and uncaring stylists who don’t care whether I am happy or not as long as they get paid and that is not the case with Renee. I don’t know what other people may have experienced but for me, Renee did a top notch job that didn’t break the bank(even for the unemployed) and I intend to continue seeing her as my hair grows out and gains strength.

I have been going to Renee regularly for ten years. Not only is she a lovely, warm individual, but her work is impeccable. I have had a sew in weave for most of the past ten years, and people always assume that it’s my own hair.(well it is– I paid for it!). She is the most reasonably priced stylist that I’m aware of. Most people I know pay at least twice as much as I pay for a weave– for less stellar results. The Harold Melvin salon is no– frills but it is clean, and the neighborhood is convenient. I am an actress on broadway and it is my business to look put together. I am in great hands with Renee. As long as she is doing hair, she will be my stylist of choice.

I have been going to Renee for a little more than a year now and my hair has never been more healthy. I used to be the one to either do my own relaxers or go to the quickie dominican salons, but my hair ended up breaking more than retaining length. Now my hair is as long as its ever been. Growing and maintaining several INCHES in a year. Renee is a gem; very nice and personable and knows black hair. She has a gentle hand(for all you fellow tender heads out there), many years of experience and reasonable competitive pricing compared to other black stylists. Plus, I am in and out in a reasonable time. She now has a spot in one of the city’s most legendary black stylist’s salon(Harold Melvin) and I always leave her chair smiling!

I’ve always been skeptical about salons because my hair has fallen out on many different occasions due to the fact that salons didn’t educate me on what to use, or do before or after a treatment. That’s why I got upset when I read Alana’s review because I have been a client of Renee’s for about 10 yrs now and I’m sure I would have witness some of these behaviors but have not. They are alway’s accommodating, giving, professional and most importantly knowledgeable. I’ve never smelled ammonia, but of course if your getting a perm you would smell a little. I have BAD asthma, so if it was bad I would never be able to handle it. You alway’s feel like your in good hands when your at Renee’s. Trust me!

This place is just straight GHETTO do not go here! First, I made an appointment on Tuesday for Services on Saturday. I called ahead because I was running late. I was told to come 45 minutes later. So first the address which is listed on Unilocal is no longer correct the salon has moved. When I arrived there were 2 screaming children, no receptionist or receptionist area. Hair was on the floor which no one was too concerned about sweeping up. The entire place smelled of amonia. It was VILE!!! They were not able to accomodate because they had 2 other people ahead of me even though I made an appointment and came 45 minutes later. I am not sure what the other reviewers are accustomed to when going to a salon but I cannot even say this was a salon it was a DIVE! There are other salons in the city one of which I booked an appointment that are professional, clean and courteous. I would not even give this place one star but I had to select something.

Me being from California I was always skeptical about where I should get my hair done in New York. So one of my good friends suggested Renee as my stylist. As picky as I am I was 100% satisfied from the moment I walked in this salon… This salon definitely has a great welcoming vibe as well as talented women… I started off with a mo-hawk and now my hair has grown evenly and healthy… I highly recommend this location for women of color looking to restore damaged hair… check out her website as well… This salon definitely has 5 star quality and consultations are always an option! …

This salon is wonderful! When I first went to this salon my 8yr old daughters hair was all messed up and within 3 months its has grown SO much and most importantly it’s healthy, Renee has rejuvenated my daughters hair. Afi does my hair and all I can say is that she pulls a miracle on 71st street. Afi’s weaving skills are amazing especially with my very short hair. Great salon atmosphere you wont regret it just pay this DYNAMICDUO a visit
