First time here and for the most part, everything was delicious. I didn’t like the kimchee or the sesame oil salmon. Ambiance was great and the place was conveniently located near Times Square and we will definitely be back for the bbq beef and pork which were superb.

Delicious. Everything was great. First experience at a Japanese barbeque where you cook your own food and I was very pleased. And I’m very picky.

Came here before a Broadway Show with my girlfriend. After looking over the menu for a while we decided on one of the combo platters of various meats. If you haven’t read anything about this place before, now you will know that you cook your own meat and veggies here. There is a medium sized grill in the center of the table that has a temperature/flame control and a mesh grill platter(our server even offered to change it out since we were cooking so much). We loved the various cuts of beef and pork. The veggies — we could skip. Overall — This was a fair experience but some things irked me. The veggies were somewhat slimy, inedible. The Meat was cut super thin, by design, but some of the fattier pieces just curl up when you grill them quickly. The marinade is also sort of sweet — all of the marinades seem similar. The sauces on the table, we tasted them but I worried I would get sick. They looked murky, dirty and just plain scary. I would return here but of course, control my own destiny with cooking my meat myself and steering clear of anything other than cooked meat.

This is a very fun place to have lunch or dinner with friends or even a date. They basically bring you the food and you cook it yourself on a small grill in the middle of your table. It’s pretty cool and fun. The food is also very delicious. We tried a few different kinds of steak and the chicken. We also had noodles and but of rice. Their Sake is very good and strong. It creeps up on you. We had a few bottles and walked out of there a bit tipsy. The staff was also very nice and professional. Good times.

I love the food! I enjoy spending time eating food fresh off the grill whether it’s by myself, with friends or with family. My favorite thing to at gyu-kaku is catching up with friends while enjoying their good food and their great happy hour drinks. The set courses they have are a great deal for bigger parties but I like to be picky and order ALC. There are a few items I always get when I go to Gyu-Kaku, try it and you’ll know why. For starters and sides, I’d like an order of shishito peppers, avocado salad, shiitake mushroom rice bibimbap. Now, the beef! Kobe Style Kalbi Short Ribs, Bistro Hanger Steak, Toro Beef and Beef Tongue please! I like to make it extra delicious with some scallion shio sauce! I don’t care much for the other meats but I always get my zucchini and mushroom medley vegetables. The desserts are really good too and keep the Geisha Girls coming. The service isn’t the greatest so it varies from time to time. The five star rating is just for the solid food they have to offer during happy hour, lunch everyday 1130−3PM& dinner everyday 3−6PM. They also offer a later happy hour time from 930−11PM but only Mondays through Thursdays. The staff don’t change the grills often enough and sometimes the drinks are a little inconsistence. At times, the server would be gone for so long. I’d forget who my server is!

Ahhhhhhh GYU! Laaaaaav this place! I’ve been to the location in Times Square. It’s a simple concept and is great for date night or just a big gathering. The menu is great and the pricing lets you get a lot for just a little. Watch out for happy hour, almost everything is half off. OHHHHKAYYY! The skirt steak and Kobe steak is amazing. Very well seasoned. Okay so if you have never been here I’ll explain how this works: You choose what marinated meats/veggies you want. The servers bring it and light the small grill that is located in the middle of your table. You them cook your own food at whatever rate you want. The meats cook very fast. I usually pair the meats with fried rice. Do not get the noodles, they aren’t worth it. Also make the meats as you go so they’re all hot and fresh when you mix em in rice. I’m fat right? Whatever, you’ll thank me later. A great first date place. The drinks are strong as well. There are a couple locations around NYC, but I think the Times Square location is the best.

Service improved a lot, I was impressed! The staff were super attentive and checked in frequently– they even changed out our grill several times. Guys, the course sets are really an amazing deal. We usually get the Fuji Course for 2($ 65 at happy hour!) — 3 types of appetizers, 3(I think?) types of meats, 1 seafood option(get the Miso Cod!), 1 veggie, 1 rice option and s’mores for dessert! You will leave stuffed.

Been here a few times and I have to say their deals are worth it when you come with a group. Definitely come during happy hour, the prices are even better. Depending how hungry you are, the food may not be enough because they are all small plates. But you cook the food yourself and with the combo deals, you get to try a little bit of everything or you can just do a la carte.

One of the best BBQ spots I’ve ever been to in NY. Meats are awesome but veggies are a bit overpriced. Overall, 5 stars!

My girlfriend had gone to the gyukaku in Mass and since she signed up and got a welcome offer to this place, she recommended us to try out the midtown location when we were out with my buddy. Gyu kaku did not disappoint. For happy hour, we got a couple beers, a bunch of meat, including the beef tongue, skirt steak, and pork belly, a vegetable platter and a mushroom platter, two orders of the sukiyaki bibimbap, the garlic fried rice, the volcano tuna app, the tuna tataki app, some lettuce for wrapping, kimchi, and some sauces, sesame salt and garlic something. The sesame and salt sauce wasn’t necessary since the spicy sauce there was already delicious, but the sauce really did make things more enjoyable. The lettuce wrap follows similar logic. The garlic sauce though, was a disappointment. Of the food stuff we ordered, the meat was all delicious and the rices were all great, but the portions were a bit small. We had to order another two things of rice and a couple more apps just to get there. The mushroom platter was delicious and had enoki mushroom in it, which made my day. The apps and the other veggie platter I could’ve done without, but meh, we wanted to try some new stuff. As far as the service here, the wait staff took forever just to get us our lettuce, when we ran out mid meal, during which the meat got cold. The uncooked meats also took forever to come out of the kitchen. I don’t quite get that, which is part of the reason I docked a point. The other was the price. Even during happy hour, the prices came out comparable to a dinner elsewhere simply because the portions were so small. My girlfriend thought we’d get a good meal at a good price during happy hour, but our total for the 3 of us came out to $ 110 before tip. Overall, food was good. Service(or kitchen response time really) was lackluster. Would definitely not come back outside of happy hour(which luckily is almost all the time). Due to the price though, I might just go elsewhere.

Heard about here from others who raved so thought to check it out after seeing«Matilda» @ the Shubert Theatre down the street. Unassuming place from exterior you’d miss it for sure if you were t looking for it! It’s dark in the outside. Made open table reZzie but still had to wait 15-minutes to be seated for our 5:30pm seating. Inside has a cool, pleasing vibe and wasn’t loud considering how crowded it was for Happy Hour, which we just made Last Call! Yes!!! Drinks and food as well as for BBQ were special happy hour prices until 6pm! Got there 5:50pm and swiftly decided which cocktails and brews to line up b4 grilling up! We liked the thin-sliced shabu better than the short rib Kalbi and I have to wonder why anyone would order wAgyu or Kobe here for those prices when u can have it prepared better expertly at a higher end place. Stick to the basics and use the staple sauces to dip and swish. The tofu chigae was so-so spicy but flat. The tuna tataki was ok nothing special. And the pork buns also were serviceable but too much spicy mayo sauce oozing out. Staff were on the ball replenishing water and changing and oiling up grills in between cooking sessions. But alas they were out of two dessert items which we soooo wanted: molten chocolate lava with ice cream and the mochi ice cream! And the corn we ordered for grilling also wasn’t available but we didn’t know it until near the end when the server noted that we didn’t receive it because he forgot to tell us they ran out. :( Bad news and definitely a ding in our review for these lapses. Even the ginger shochu cocktail could have been stronger. Nevertheless it’s clean, convivial and enjoyAble and you won’t smell like a BBQ when you leave!

My goal in life: to visit every Guy-Kaku location during happy hour! So far, this is my 2nd location. Livelier than the midtown location(see my previous post), and this one is not as «visually asethetic» as the aforementioned(still the same layout and design). Now the food: After the grill took forever to heat up(not sure why), each dish brought out she gave us a recommended grill time which as helpful since neither of us cook lol For our party of two, we ordered the popular«Fuji» course. We stuck with the recommendations from the waitress(thank you baby girl), and we were beyond satisfied with our meats(pause moment). –Tuna Tutaki, Chili shrimp dumpling, Gyu-kaku salad, Sukiyaki Bimbimp(SERIOUSLYTHEBESTRICEOFALLTIME), assorted veggies, two different steaks(can’t remember which one I chose), garlic shrimp, pork belly, toro beef, and s’mores for dessert. –Drink-strawberry mojito(don’t judge me). Very strong! In reality the 5 stars is devoted to the concept of the place: grilling your meats adds to the experience, the food is actually seasoned well, and happy hour deals are pretty solid. The portions could be improved(I leave just satisfied but not overly full). Still worth every cent.

What’s more to say? Quality food and drink and extremely reasonable prices. They have happy hour 365 and drinks are 5 $ at bar always. It’s also a unique experience to cook your own food, it really enhances the meal. The smell of the meats, veggies and seafood cooking right before your eyes makes your mouth water. They have a lot to chose from or pre packed sets for groups. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Decent food, decent value during happy hour. I stopped by as part of a group of 6 on a weekday for a happy hour meal. We ordered the meat lover’s course for our group, along with a few other sides. It’s a decent selection of meats and is probably the right amount of food for six, although it’s not particularly cheap; I can’t imagine ordering this amount of food and paying the listed prices for them. The service isn’t particularly great or helpful, but you’re able to get what you need eventually. It’s a decent place to have a larger group meal if you can dine during happy hour, but otherwise it’s probably a little pricey for a DIY meal.

Japanese bbq. YUM. I’ve been to this location twice and once to their other location and the food was on point every single time. Try to go when they have their lunch special or during happy hour because you can get more bang for your buck. I don’t think there’s anything I’ve tried on their menu that I don’t like. My favorites are probably anything listed in their steak section. The pork belly is also really good. They might have a wait depending on when you go but it’s usually not too long. You can also call ahead and reserve a table if you have a large party.

Very great place to have for lunch. Not very pricy. But at the same time, food is wonderful. Beef are great. Will definitely visit again if having another chance. **** environment is great as well. Just need a ventilation I think. The smoke is kinda a negative. But overall great!!!

I caught the Happy hour on Thanksgiving night before my friends and I did some black friday shopping. The wait was a bit long even though it didn’t seem packed. I’m not sure what we ordered but service was pretty good about changing grills. The guy did forget to refill on our sauces but i’m sure he was running around.

The rib eye was my absolute favorite meat to order. So tender and when combined with the spicy soy sauce(which had a nice garlicky taste to it), it was pure perfection! The appetizers are also a must! When you come for happy hour, which you SHOULD, they are only 5 bucks an app. I thoroughly enjoyed the kimcheese fries and the calamari! Yummy goodness! We also ordered the cod fish and a marinated skirt steak, but they really did not compare to the rib eye. Oh and the steamed spinach with garlic is certainly a must! It holds vegetables to a whole new standard! Yummy yummy in my tummy.

I am soooo glad that I went to this restaurant in the Times Square area — even though I can’t pronounce the name! My girlfriend and I had dinner there the other evening and I have to say that I honestly could not find any negatives about it. We were seated promptly as the restaurant was not crowded when we arrived. Our waitress immediately came over and explained the process to us as this was our first time there. At your table is a grill that they turn on and you cook your own food — which was kinda cool. We started with drinks — since it was still happy hour(it lasts from the time they open until 6pm everyday), the drinks were $ 5. I had the Geisha Girl(peach schnapps, Malibu, Vodka, Cranberry and Orange juice), my girlfriend had the Coco Mo which was a piña colada and sprite drink — both were so good we had two! We ordered off the Fuji Course(for 2 people) which was reduced by $ 5 for happy hour. I have to say that you get a lot of courses with this meal, although each course doesn’t give you a lot of food so you have room to continue to eat. The fun part was cooking everything: from steaks, to chicken to veggies — it comes out just the way you like it. Throughout our eating experience, the waitress kept coming out to change our grill and take away any empty plates. I have to say the service there was very good. After our meal, even though we didn’t order it, our waitress brought us marshmallows to roast with graham crackers and chocolate. I haven’t had a S’more since I was a girl scout and it brought back some great memories! Overall it was a very pleasant experience, both the company and the food — I would definitely like to go again.

Came here for the happy hour $ 65 bbq for 2. It included a buck of apps, several meats, assorted veg, bimbimbap rice and smores. I was soooo full. For apps, we had the salmon, avocado salad, spicy tuna volcano, miso soup. Meats, we had chateaubriand, premium, pork belly, shrimp. Everything was delish. Service was friendly and efficient.
