I have been coming to Kodama for 20 years and it is the best Sushi in midtown! Do not miss it!!!

This place is incredible. I’ve been coming here since I moved to the city about 4 months ago, and the sushi is amazing. The people are super friendly, and the service is great. Highly recommend! Specially before of after watching a Broadway show! It makes the whole experience complete!

Beautiful sushi presentation with fresh delicious fish! Such a treasure so close to the craziness of mid-town. We had Kinky Boots and it was delicious!

Kodama = my favorite sushi place, within distance of Times Square. Great sushi/sashimi, special rolls w/Broadway themes, sake/beer, cocktails, incredibly good service, family-friendly and low-key, casual with upscale experience. Try black rice sushi if you want something new, too.

Ordered vegetable curry, mets roll, and crunchy black spicy tuna roll. The curry is more spicy than sweet despite being Japanese style though I liked it a lot. Not a bad place to have some Japanese food in midtown if you want to sit down. The area is dim and has a bit of a romantic air. Worth a visit, return visits YMMV

Had dinner here this evening… asked the concierge at our hotel for a good sushi spot close by and he directed us to Kodama. Great service, good food, good value. Our waitress was amazing(wish we got her name). I recommend.

I ordered Gyu Don and there were A LOT onions and very little meat which is disappointing and very unusual.

I felt like this was a pretty average sushi joint. The service was a little aggressive(asked us if we were ready to order 3 times within 5 minutes) but at least the food came out quickly! I got the eel avocado and the black dragon roll. I found the eel avocado too be too salty(I think they added too much eel sauce). The black dragon roll was delicious but was the exact same portion size as the eel avocado even though it cost 2.5x as much. I think this place is only worth it if you stick to the hand rolls.

I was walking around the hotel area looking for somewhere that I could get some rice to eat. I think I may have gone in thru the back door on 8th Avenue. They have a sushi bar and an extensive menu. A number of dishes came on a sizzling platter. I decided to try the katsu curry which was good. Just a warning the platter is very hot and the temperature of the food is hot!!! Definitely took care of my rice fix.

Let me begin to say I have never been treated so rudely or have been offended so much in my life. My best friend and I were in town for the weekend and figured to try Sushi from New York to see how it is compared to our Chicago sushi. We were intrigued by the black rice, which was ok. I have had much better sushi elsewhere and the service was poor. The waitress barely came by to check on us, when we were finished we asked for the check and I asked for another glass of water before we head out to walk some more. We paid the check in effective cash and I would pass on the tip to the waitress when she would come back with my water. Another woman came by to pick up the tab and she tuned straight back around and bee-lined to me saying«You still owe the tip, tip was not included.» I responded by saying«I know I have the money right here.» While showing her the cash in my hand. She walks away and comes back«You HAVE to leave at least 15%» and points out the percentage price at the bottom of the receipt I was shocked by the balls she had to tell me how much I had to leave when it wasn’t even deserved. Never in my entire life have I been told something like that nor forced to leave the tip. I took out the rest of her dollar short tip put it on the table and left, even without my water. Just a little tip to this restaurant that wasn’t listed on my bill, you never tell a customer they owe you a tip. That is the absolute rudest and uncalled for thing to do. Future patrons you’re better off eating chicken kebabs from the gentleman across the street, he will also treat you much kinder.

This sushi place was right across from our show(Kinky Boots) and it looked like a great choice for sushi. I wasn’t sure what time it closed until 10 mins after we order the food, the server quickly rushed the bill over for us to pay. A tad disappointed in the service as they should have told us they were closing the kitchen prior to us putting in an $ 80 meal. The salmon bento box was cooked perfectly(hence the 3 stars given) and my sashimi plate was good, not the best, but good. I order a large hot sake and a sapporo on draft in which both drinks arrived late. Overall, I wouldn’t go back because there’s just so many other restaurants to try and mainly the service was below par.

Watch out. If the waitstaff decides you“seem that you are from out-of-town” they will forcibly & nonhighlightedly add a 17% gratuity without you asking. Horrible form and disrespectful… illegal?

I really liked this place. First of all finding it felt like an adventure all in itself. It’s inside an organic sushi store, hidden away nice and quietly. Service was 5⁄5. My boyfriend and I walked in and were greeted cheerfully by a very nice gentleman, who might have been the owner? He came by our table a couple of times bringing us our tea, asking if the food is okay, and telling us to wait a minute before pouring ourself green tea from the tea pot for the optimal taste. Our server was a very cute girl who also made sure we had everything.(She forgot to bring out my bowl of rice, but after asking her she quickly apologized and brought it out, with a smile on her face, looking apologetic) The food was fantastic and I had a really good time here. The music was also very nice and not too loud; just perfect. Love this, it’s a hidden gem.

This is really a cool place for midtown. Came yesterday with my best friend. Service was not at its best(forgot the water…) but they were so nice and I really enjoyed watching Jason the sushi master making the sushi. As I am very passionate about jap food I always sit at the bar. The sushis were vet good. The 7 fish and flying fish rob was my favorite. Jason was very friendly even if he was very busy. Just be careful… the tip can be included in the bill. Wasn’t aware so I tiped. They remove my tip. But I never like when a restaurant chose how much I should tip. customers should decode how much they should tips. Anyway it was a very nice place to hang out so 4 out of 5 stars is pretty good!

This place is the epitome of a three star establishment. The food itself is fine. Nothing amazing but also not bad by any means. If you want consistent, serviceable Japanese food, this is a good choice. The bento box special I ordered for dinner was okay. The chicken teriyaki was tender and the California roll included with the box was okay. Given that it was a California roll, I’d say it isn’t the best indicator about fish freshness, etc. But the rolls here aren’t particularly subtle by any means and will do just fine if you’re not expecting something out of Nobu or Sushi of Gari. The décor is old and the climate control is a bit wacky(it’s warm in some areas and freezing by the A/C vents. I mean frigid cold). There’s a small vestibule that connects to their«black sushi» takeout area. As I said, there’s nothing amazing or terrible here. You pretty much get what you pay for(even if it’s a bit more expensive than the quality you’re getting) and if you’re looking for a simple Japanese meal ahead of a show and can’t go anywhere else, you’ll be fine here.

I visit this place a lot, mainly because I live close by and the food is good. The staff is friendly and service is good. Usually I get the black rice rolls or the sashimi, while its not the best in Hell’s Kitchen it is good and convenient to the Theater District and Hell’s Kitchen. This place also offers discounts with show tickets

Was craving sushi and this place is walking distance from Time Square so my family decided to try it. This place was the one of the few places open that offered bento boxes so we came here. The bento boxes are really filling. It took two of us to finish it. Also the pricing was bad either for how much we had. The service was always aware and very accommodating! Kudos to them! The only reason why this is 2 stars is that the food was okay. Nothing special really :(

How is this place even still in business? The good(or OK): * Black rice seems interesting at first, but it’s actually a gimmick. But it’s fun the first time! The bad: * Sushi was made with regular(non seasoned) rice compacted way too firmly. Reminded me of supermarket sushi. * Edamame was unevenly seasoned. One bite was like eating a salt lick. Another bite was entirely bland. The ugly: * Bowl of udon was disgusting and tasted like supermarket udon. The bowl was precariously balanced on the bento box and would sway back and forth, threatening to topple over and splash me with scalding liquid. * Tempura sauce was bland, like watered down dish water. * I sat at the sushi bar, facing the desiccated, dried out sushi fish. Just looking at it made me want to vomit. Go somewhere else. Let the tourists have this place.
