There used to be an Esprit in SF. In fact, Esprit used to be *made* in SF — waaaaaaaay before sweatshops were trendy. There are still remnants of Esprit in SF — but there are no more stores which is sort of a bummer for me. Esprit makes some of the only women’s pants with a 32″ inseam out the door. It’s become very trendy to do the 34″ inseam because really if you’re female and happen to be born under 5’9 well, toofuckingbad. Have you met your local tailor? You might want to make him your new best friend. Except that *most* women are under 5’9. I’m 5’6(ok, i’m rounding up a lil bit) and I like pants that hit the pavement. Not an inseam that crests a half inch above the bottom of my shoe — I’m talking *at* pavement. I want an inseam that starts to fray after a few years. Not immediately. But maybe after a year or two one thread comes loose. And then another. And then one more. Until finally, you start to notice that there’s some wear and tear and the bottom of my pants is collecting a bit of residue everywhere I go. Like a bit of the world travels with me after I leave a place. And every place after that cakes onto the place I went before it… Esprit fits. No tailoring. No hemming. No nothing. They just fit. And every time I go into an Esprit store I’m reminded of the joys of pants you can pull the tags off of and just wear that day. I love my SF tailor but there’s a unique joy to off-the-rack gear that you can wear the next day with your favorite shoes. Nothin else like it…

The two stars is pretty much because of the fashions and the price. The staff was helpful and polite, so this is nothing against them. The stuff runs a little on the bland/shapeless side. It’s 15% more than what I would want to spend, and that’s just enough to make me say«meh» and walk away. I wish stores would get better lighting. This is my universal gripe that will never be satisfied because then these stores would like a department store. But dammit, I’d be able to see.

I’ll agree with most of the women here that they are completely overpriced. And I agree, most of their clothes are rather bland. But I am still a fan. I’ve been a fan since the 80’s, so I’m sorta an Esprit shopper for life. While I was shopping here I purchased lots of great tops. Most of which I picked up in their clearance/sale section. I picked up a few regular priced items, but I shopped smart. I shopped for pieces I couldn’t find elsewhere in colors I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else. I still love their clothes and I get complimented on my Esprit tops all the time, so go figure!

Every time I see an Esprit, I get so happy because they don’t have one in my hometown anymore. I used to go to the outlet in SF all the time during my middle school and high school days, and when they closed it I was so upset I went back almost every day until the end just to take the free hangers. I was pleasantly surprised that the employee who worked there suggested that I try a different size in a sweater because of the fit(a smaller size at that). I didn’t get the sweater but opted for a purse instead. I was a little annoyed though because they kept trying to get me to sign up for the free Esprit card, but since I’m not a local and there is no Esprit near me, there is really no point. The clothes seem okay but of course not top quality. Their sweaters are a little on the itchy side but still, a decent place to shop.

Bland bland bland!!! But durable. To their credit, I REALLYNEEDED a black colored belt – the kind that cinched the waist and went over clothing – and they had it. It was a fashion emergency and I was running late! The belt was $ 40 but when I was ready to pony up, the cash register revealed it was on clearance for $ 4.00. SCORE!

Wait, when did H&M decide to triple their prices? My bad — It’s an Espirit. …The brand still exists? — - - To their credit, Espirit’s quality is slightly better than H&M’s. That said, I’d prefer to spend more/less — I’m not a fan of mid-range pricing. 2 levels of nicely lit, nicely spaced & nicely organized merchandise. Clothes, bags & accessories. — - - The space formerly housed a Barnes & Noble. Because the city clearly needs more clothing stores & fewer book stores. /sarcasm
