One of the few purveyors of strong waters that’s open late, Christopher Street Wine & Spirits fulfills a vital and necessary function in the life of a young West Village denizen. Or it’s complicit in hepatic malfunctioning. Either way, it’s important. I just wish the product wasn’t so sketchy. The foils on wine are frequently brittle and the corks are dry. Opening a bottle of wine from this place is generally a stressful experience because I’m so concerned that the cork will break or that the wine has been exposed to oxygen. Even when«quaffing» the first glass, I have to talk myself into believing that everything is fine. Sort of frustrating if you’ve just dropped $ 30+ on a bottle. Also, I once asked if they carried a particular bottle and, quite reasonably, they said they didn’t, but that they could order it for me. Returned a week later and not only had they not ordered it, the guy I spoke to didn’t even remember me. Nice.

It was past 10pm and the two liquor stores I frequent were closed. How LAZY. I freaked out because I’ve been obsessing all day about margaritas and wanted to make them as close as possible to the ones at MAS Farmhouse where I had a ball drinking whatever I could handle and BOOM– Unilocal brought me here… and the cashier was so nice as to warn me to not drink Patron but get the Cuervo Gold brand since I was mixing it, anyway. That’s gold.

Although on a standard Tuesday night in the dead of winter Christopher Street can easily pass as a Mardi Gras celebration, this liquor store has managed to stay sane despite the location. As a former Christopher Street resident, I have made far too many trips to all the local liquor stores and this one truly stands out from the crowd. The employees are friendly, the prices are super reasonable, and you can even find a bit of sanity among the turmoil outside.
