The Barrel House

Very good food, service and décor! Only thing we were not satisfied with was the bread on the table as it was blah and the shrimp scampi lacked flavor but my barrel house burger and the crab cake and arugula salad rocked! We will definitely be back!

Our family stopped in on our way to Virginia after visiting relatives in Sussex. It is a cozy restaurant with an excellent menu. I had the portobello stack — which was delicious! My husband and son both had burgers — which were perfectly done, served with excellent fries. And, my other son had the fish tacos served with mango salsa. We had great service. Perfect lunch on a dreary and cold day. While we didn’t try a cocktail, I will definitely be back to test one of the tasty sounding drinks!

The décor is great, love the look. There was a show happening at the theater down the street so the restaurant and bar was very crowded, which wasn’t a horrible thing but it seemed like service suffered a bit because of it. Took a while to get drinks and food. I was very excited to see burrata on the menu, however what i received was not true burrata. It was missing the soft mozzarella exterior and I only got the creamy inside. Don’t get me wrong everything was seasoned great and tasted good it just was not was I was expecting when I read burrata. My husband got the calamari which was very good and the barrel burger which was also very good. I got the cuban for dinner which I would not recommend. All I tasted was mustard, the pork was not tender and had no flavor. Overall I think I would give it another try since they have only been open a couple months and may still need time to iron out the kinks. One suggestion I would give would be a better beer selection.

I went with friends that night and everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the Ahi Tuna burger (a big fan of tuna burgers and very happy to see one on the menu) and it was great. Prepared and served as expected and very satisfying. I went with a Corona so I can’t speak on the drink menu but next time I’ll definitely give one their creative drinks a shot. I am also very impressed by the décor, with exposed brick walls coupled with wood paneling you’d expect to be in the City. All around it was a very enjoyable experience and I can’t wait to visit this place in the summer when they have the front doors open to the sidewalk.

Really great dinner and entertainment tonight. We had burgers but they were excellent. Staff is great and I can tell they really care! Very refreshing for newton.

I had the very best Shrimp Scampi I have ever had.
I love the atmosphere and I wish the new owners good luck. I will definitely be back.

Bit my tongue here and it really hurts. But other than that, really good food and good looking place. I could eat the Thanksgiving Sandwich every day and my Barrel Burger was cooked perfectly.

Delicious!!! Came here after a concert and got a few apps. Simple and delicious, fresh and tasty!!! We will be back for dinner.

Great food, nice atmosphere, good service. The price is not too crazy, comparable to any restaurant in a larger city.

My wife and I stumbled across The Barrel House looking for a place to eat before a concert at The Newton Theatre and we are sure glad that we did! From the atmosphere to the service to the food and drinks everything was top notch!
P. S. Their house made fresh mozzarella is absolutely amazing!

Enjoyed my meal. Had one of the specials tonight, Chilean Sea Bass with a pineapple mango salsa over white rice. Very tasty. House salad was very good too, fresh and crisp. The sea bass was a little firmer than I prefer, but overall very good. Friendly atmosphere. New owners getting things going in a former restaurant space. Lots of potential here. Needs a little polish, but considering they’ve only been open for a week, pretty damn good. If they can keep it going they should do well… One minor negative, drink price was a little steep. $ 10 for a citron and sprite.
