I don’t understand all these 1 star reviews. Been going here a long time and have never had a bad experience. The family that owns/works there are super friendly and the food is great. Best hibachi in the area. And it comes with the real Japanese mustard sauce, not that weird yum yum sauce places have switched too. The rice that comes with it is incredibly tasty, one of the best anywhere. Yakisoba taste like it does in Japan, which is hard to find. Give this place a try!

Great sushi. I’ve gotten the same rolls from Soya for almost 10 years. They are consistent and quality. Fresh fish in all orders. The owner, Sam, is friendly and a huge reason I keep coming back. Lunch time it’s easy to get quick service. Their lunch box is popular and filling too. Great for coming from Ferguson HQ for lunch. Highly recommended.

Midiocre food at best with a premium price. I got a chicken dish I forgot what it was called, but for 17.95 it consisted of a friend chicken breast, some carrot garnish, and a side bowl of rice. Was with a party of four and everyone had the same opinion — the total came to over $ 100 for the same we would have spent $ 60 somewhere else.

This place was the worst. I ordered a roll and 6 pieces of nigiri. Literally there was less than a half cup of rice in all of that. The rice balls for the nigiri were so small that the fish hung way over on each side. Normally if I were to order that much from a sushi restaurant I would be satisfied but I had to go and order more food from else where after. I will never be going to the Soya again. Don’t waste your time and money. The Soya in Hampton is 800 times better!!! The only reason I am giving the place 2 stars is that the server was nice.

We have been going to Soya for many years and I was staggered when I read the reviews on this site. I have NEVER had a bad meal there in easily 10 years and we go fairly regularly. The service has always been excellent and very gracious. There is sometimes a wait for the sushi, but as it is made to order, that is to be expected. I have found them to be getting more expensive, but I have never never had any reason o question the quality.

Hibachi was ok but they don’t cook in front of you. For the price, the quality of meats were sub standard. I wouldn’t go back.

So disappointed. I like to support locally owned and family-owned restaurants. The sushi is good but the service has been progressively bad. We even tried the Hibachi and it was quite boring. I was embarrassed that I had brought friends for their first Hibachi experience and there was absolutely no flair. I even tried eating there on a Groupon, but the service was still poor and the experience wasn’t as good as the competition. Regretfully, I won’t support this restaurant. There are plenty more excellent sushi restaurants in the area. :((I’m assuming I’m not the only one as each time I’ve gone, it is less and less busy).

Wife and I came in for Saturday dinner. Place was empty, sat down wherever we wanted. There was a guy playing guitar which was nice. We ordered a Las Vegas roll and a Hiroshima roll. They were just SO good. Sammy makes such amazing sushi. Love this place, but not a cheap dinner.

My family and I recently at at Soya and had a unpleasant experience. The service was slow and unfriendly despite the restaurant being almost entirely empty. When the food arrived, it was over cooked and barely edible. We just decided it was a bad experience and to never return. Well today my husband became very ill. He was violently throwing up and it tasted like the food from the evening before. Their prices are sky high also! They have fish tanks for viewing in the dining room, an the fish are starving and sickly. Whatever you do, eat somewhere else!

First the hours are pretty much stranded for a sushi place in Newport News. Now the special roll menu has no priced on it. The salad had a very sweet dressing to it, also mostly cabbage almost no lettuce. The miso soup had a very bland flavor. We ordered 4 rolls; Love you ’07, Cloud Salmon, Oaska and Halloween. After going to many other sushi places in the area I would say that this is very cheap quality and has a bad presentation. When we receive the bill after being told the soup and salad for free they charged us and they were $ 3 and $ 4 each. We didn’t even finish all the rolls, barely had two pieces of each to try them. The sushi was so bad a dog return it away. I wish I could give it a no star.

We will not be back! Tried to use Groupon yesterday 10÷13÷12 and it was closed on a Saturday with NO hours on the door or explanation except to say they are closed on Mondays! It had BLANK for Saturday. Are you kidding me? And outside the door it says no public restroom — I don’t mean if that means NO restroom at all but if so that is gross! We drove all the way from Norfolk for a birthday lunch and have been excited about this Groupon — I have asked Groupon for a refund and I will not do business with Soya in NN period!

I had a groupon to this place and was very excited to have sushi. I cannot believe how horrible the food was. I ordered edamame and found it fair at best. The worst part of the meal was when my sushi rolls arrived. I was unsure if the ahi tuna roll I had ordered actually had ahi in it. It was deep fried and the only thing you could taste was seaweed. My las vegas roll tasted exactly like the other. Disgusting!

Sammy is the Man!!! He creates unbelievable tasty sauces for each sushi roll. Definitely a true sushi chef! Every dish is unique, and isn’t scared to experiment with textures and flavors. The fish is always fresh, and he has an awesome crew. You have to sit at the bar, at least once. I am from Southern California and I make it a point to visit Soya at least once a year. Do not confuse this for the Soya on coliseum dr. in Hampton, they don’t come close. I brought my girlfriend with me once, and she doesn’t want sushi anywhere else. I am definitely spoiled and have yet to find a Sushi Bar that comes close to Soya. If you are just looking for a Hibachi Grill, that is ok too; but this is a SUSHI lovers dream! YOUWILLNEVERWANTTOGOANYWHEREELSE!(I think he sprinkles crack on his dishes) HAHAHA! Ok, THATWAS A JOKE!
