Just tried a Jason roll and Sashimi tacos(bite sized pieces of heaven atop a slice of fried set potato – ohmagosh!) Another solo sushi excursion gone right :) plus a yummy cucumberish martini to finish it off.

Went there for lunch the other day. We got the Bento box. It was delicious! The service was also great. I will definitely be going back again!

A coworker and I decided to go to Hayashi for lunch because it’s within walking distance from our office in City Center. The restaurant’s upscale feel made me question the authenticity and quality of sushi(based on previous experience), but you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, right? Upon entering, a hostess asks if you want to eat on the sushi or hibachi side. We opted for the sushi side of the restaurant, and I was happy to find that they had a number of lunch options varying from specialty roll specials to bento boxes. I ordered the salmon teriyaki bento box which came with soup, salad, rice, vegetable and shrimp tempura, and a California roll Not bad for only $ 10. I definitely want to come back and try something other than the California roll. Maybe the hibachi too, but IDK.

Hayashi Sushi is located in Newport News City Center. It has a cool upscale metropolitan feel. Maria our hostess was simply outstanding. Her customer service skills were appreciated. As for the food, I loved the sushi. Fresh and reasonably priced. Overall, Hayashi is a great establishment for a fun dinner with friends and family.

A lovely eatery, clean, well appointed décor, good service, great prices for hibachi, but the hibachi is nothing special. I enjoyed the chicken broth soup more than the hibachi. Next time I will try something else from the menu.

Had my daughter’s birthday dinner here on 10÷10÷15, and it was so nice. The staff were friendly & accommodating. It was super packed with birthday parties & homecoming weekend, and our party had to wait for our reserved table. We received a 10% discount & I really appreciated that. Everyone enjoyed themselves. The whole restaurant sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to my daughter, Lianna. She loves hibachi! The table chef was awesome as well, and I actually remembered him from a few years ago when my husband took me to Hayashi for my birthday Excellent staff! Yummy food! Lianna’s Birthday Dinner was super cute & fun! Thank you Hayashi City Center Staff!

Great place for sushi and other entrees! I love the crispy duck and the teriyaki choices are an excellent value. The scallops and shrimp are fantastic! Things can get pricey on the sushi menu but it’s so fresh!

I’ve been to Hayashi several times now, and I only go for the sushi. The sushi is fresh, the service is outstanding, and the hot saki naturally makes the experience that much better. Hayashi has a great atmosphere and great service. Whenever I go, I always get the sushi special — 3 specialty rolls for $ 35. It sounds pricey — but the quality of the sushi is worth it. I can’t go to Hayashi without ordering the Strawberry Roll and the Mango Roll. I often have an internal battle as to whether or not get 2 or even 3 Strawberry Rolls. They are that amazing. This dinner was no different! Love everything about Hayashi and would highly recommend to sushi lovers.

After reading the reviews I decided to give this location a go and have what I was hope no to be a nice family dinner. The wife and I both order the double up entrée and were very disappointed. The food came out ice cold in the middle of the steak and shrimp and the vegetables were also cold to the touch. The only items that came out hot were the bowls of rice that we ordered. Really the only reason I am even rating this a 3 star is one because the waitress was very nice and took very good care of us and i know for a fact that as soon as our items were up on the counter she had it on the table writhing a minute or so. The other reason I am going with the 3 star is because everyone has an off day and I don’t want to really test them apart for something I could have easily sent back. I decided to take it home and heat it up for lunch tomorrow. Hope this helps them get a bit better in the line of ensuring their items don’t come out cold.

I went in with high expectations and walked out moderately satisfied. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered the volcano and firecracker rolls. They were OK but I did eat them all. Too many toppings but I guess that is my fault for ordering them. I think the hibachi side of the restaurant would be more fun and a better experience. I would go again and order something different. The service was a little lacking as well.

We’ve been coming here often on for quite some time. We have always loved the meals here and had good service. However the last few times the service has gone way downhill, as well as the food. We ordered the bento boxes today. First of all restaurants usually are willing to do substitutions, however in this case no substitutions were allowed even if we paid extra money. Next we didn’t receive any wasabi for our sushi. Lastly, we received no refills of our green tea and then discovered that we paid $ 2.50 each for the green tea which is always been complementary in the past. All in all a very disappointing experience.

Food is good. Service? Terrible If you want to be treated with decent service don’t go here. We sat at the hibachi table and ordered sushi as well. It took 30 minutes for someone to come out and start cooking. And they forgot to bring out our sushi the server said«well would you like me to cancel the order?» Unbelievable. At that point the only thing keeping us from leaving is the hibachi chef. He was really nice and the food was great The chirashi is good. Would recommend for a quick lunch. A bit pricey even for lunch though.

I think that this is the best hibachi grill on the peninsula. The décor and ambience is amazing. The service was quick. The food was good. Our chef was super kid friendly and fun. I highly recommend coming here.

Very good ambiance with a good balance of décor. Wait staff was attentive although our waiter was new and not real informed. He was courteous enough to get the chef over for clarification which won us points. We had warm saki and martini’s which were mixed well. Good selection of appetizers although we would have loved to seen a grilled vs. fried calamari selection. Sushi was fresh with distinct flavors. Grilled scallops were fresh and are recommended. Being from Baltimore and basing our reviews on many higher quality sushi restaurants, we would surely recommend this restaurant for a great night out.

Hayashi was able to accommodate a very big group with nonresergationsnon a Sunday at Lunchtime. The restaurant was very spacious. The hostess set up the table and then the habachi chef came out to put on his show. I have been to a good number of restaurants with similar themes and Carlos had a personality that really helped enhance the dining experience. Often chefs just dosome tricks but really don’t work with the crowd. Some members of our party had children and he kept them engaged and entertained. He also surprised us with three slices of cheese cake which the waitress served along with a Gong. Yes, a Gong was placed in the dining area and we all got to hit it while making a birthday wish. Prices average about $ 20 a person before tip and tax. The food was well cooked and the chef went out of his way to make sure each person’s food was made to order.

Graham and I are continuing our quest to find great restaurants in Virginia. I had a doctor’s appointment on Friday, and one of the magazines they had been Coastal Virginia Magazine’s ‘Best of…’ issue. We were planning to have a sushi date that weekend, so I decided to try one of the places on the list. And that’s how we ended up at Hayashi Sushi & Grill. Hayashi impressed me when we walked in with their modern décor, extensive menu and friendly staff. We were sat promptly and our server was friendly and attentive. We ordered our drinks and asked for appetizer recommendations. She raved about the crab hamrumaki. She said it was«similar to the crab Rangoon that you get at cheap chinese restaurants, but a thousand times better.» It was not good. It was perfectly crispy, and the citrus glaze was delicious, but thing you could taste was the onion. Give me the crab Rangoon at the«cheap» restaurants any day of the week. We ordered four sushi rolls, and spent enough that we got complimentary salad & soup. I went with the house salad(I’m a sucker for ginger dressing) and Graham had the miso soup. Both were delicious. I loved that they served the dressing in a separate pot for me to pour on my own. I was able to happily drown my salad in dressing. =) We typically order four rolls when we have sushi. I pick two, he picks two. I always order a rainbow roll, and the other rolls we ordered were the Area 51(salmon avocado roll with wasabi tobiko, special sauce on top; battered & fried), the Volcano(shrimp tempura, chili, masago/ikura, spicy mayo, wasabi tobiko) and the Hot Night(shrimp tempura/spicy tuna, crunch, eel sauce & smelt roe). The rainbow roll was delicious. It had a good amount of cucumber, so it had an excellent crunch to it. The other rolls were a disappointment. None of them had very much flavor. I’m guessing the sauces they were drenched in masked the flavors of the fish. But my biggest problem with the rolls were how small they were. If you consider the price of the rolls and the size of the rolls, it made them some of the most expensive we’ve ever had. I mean, I’ve gotten bigger, fancier rolls at the grocery store. My other problem with the rolls was the way they were advertised. At the top of the sushi menu it said that they were all $ 13 each, or 3 for $ 35. When the check came, they were all $ 13 each. We asked our server and she said that none of the rolls we ordered qualified. Um… there was nothing on the menu that differentiated the rolls that were a special price from the rest of them. It was a whopping total of $ 4, so obviously not a big deal, but it was still really annoying. So, overall I wasn’t super pleased with our dinner here. Kero Sushi in Yorktown is still going to be my go-to. There are a few more places I need to check out before I name just one restaurant my «favorite sushi in Hampton Roads».

What a beautiful little place in City Center Oyster Point. I walked in rocking a wife beater after doing some Unilocal work at The Mariners’ Museum and doing a run at Noland Trail so I certainly felt underdressed for the restaurant. The hostess who also served as my waitress was very accommodating although she made it clear in a very cute way after I asked that I would be a bit out of place because of my running attire. To stay away from all the other patrons I took a seat at the sushi bar. Being at a «city» establishment the prices certainly reflected it. Scour through the menu thoroughly and you’ll find some decent meals for a good price. I settled on a bowl of edamame($ 3) and the nightly special, white tuna in olive oil. Eight pieces was $ 16. It was a very delicious choice. Of course, I had to ask for white rice and a spoon. :-) Although my meal didn’t come with soup or salad the waitress offered it to me with no additional charge. Overall, an impressive place. As I was leaving I noticed the hibachi section. Definitely something worth checking out in the future along with a trip to the new movie theater. I took a couple strolls around City Center and did a walk around the fountain. It was a great night for it. Very impressed with what they’ve done with this area.

I went here for dinner one night when I was in town for business and was staying at the hotel down the road. I was able to walk here so I figured I would give it a try since it was something different. I guess walking in I would have never known it was a hibachi place, but I went there for sushi only and decided to sit outside. The patio was a small, but nice to sit at when it is not busy. I enjoyed it more than sitting inside since it was louder in there anyways. Ther service was quick and friendly so i also couldnt complain. I ordered the chefs special sushi platter or something of that sort. It was $ 19-$ 20 and you get different types of fish depending on what the chef thought was fresh that day. I enjoyed it at being near the water the fish was indeed fresh. You also get soup and salad for the price as well and overall was a great deal! If I got a chance to go back I definitely would and maybe would try the hibachi this time. Such a nice hidden place to go to for a meal!
