I recently moved here and was nervous that I was not going to find a good sushi restaurant. I was so happy I found this place! Everything is so fresh and the staff was friendly. The sushi chef even gave us a few free sushi rolls. I will be coming back frequently.

Came for my birthday dinner and it was great! We had a party of 7, and had originally been seated on the floor/mats in the back, however had to move to tables. The server lady was quick and easy to make the switch. I ordered the teriyaki chicken with tempura combo, after debating on sushi/sashimi boxes. The chicken teriyaki was really good, at first I thought it wouldn’t be enough food, however with the tempura and rice it evened out. The chicken was nice and tender, teriyaki sauce not too overpowering. The tempura was nice and crunchy, though some of the pieces were quite big. I liked that they gave the tempura sauce in an actual bowl, with more than enough for the pieces, instead of the little dippy saucers that most places do. I tasted some of the sushi and sashimi from my mom’s plate, and it was fresh! the spicy rolls were very good, and nicely spicy. Will be back for sure

Not only did we have to wait for almost 1−½ hours for 5 rolls but the sushi wasn’t even that good. There are definitely better sushi places in Newport News.

This is my go to sushi joint when I’m in the mood for upscale sushi. The spicy tuna is as good as it gets. The service is good, it takes a bit to get your food, but I consider that normal given the quality of the sushi. Do yourself a favor and order an appetizer of the spicy tuna or some edamame. The only downside to this place are the chairs, they are horribly uncomfortable. After an hour of sitting in those chairs my back and rear are usually pretty sore.

Wow, I thought I had good sushi, and then my husband and I went to lunch at Sushi Yama one day, and our world was turned upside down. They have by far the best and freshest sushi I have ever eaten. We ended up loving this place so much, we became regulars. And I don’t mean like one a month regulars, but once or twice a week regulars. Tammy, is one of the main servers and she is absolutely great. I cannot tell you how many times we received something that was«on the house.» It makes you feel great being at a place like that where rule and corporations aren’t dictating what the person who is actually interacting with the customers is doing. Tammy is so sweet and personal. She remembered us every time we came in and everything we talked about previously. She is the gem of Sushi Yama. The sushi chef is awesome too. He is so nice, we just never learned his name. Everything we ever tried here was great. We unfortunately don’t live in the area anymore, but when we talk about it, Sushi Yama is always brought up and that we would fly there just to have a dinner there. All there servings are more than generous. Also, don’t let the location deceive you. We almost didn’t go here because it was next to and African hair studio and behind an IHOP. I am so glad we didn’t let us steer us away. BESTSUSHIEVER!!!

My roommate had been to Sushi Yama once a couple of years ago and had talked about it ever since. We tried to go several times but something always came up, so tonight we finally made it there and I am so glad we did! Don’t let the simple décor fool you, this is the best place to get sushi in town and the service is amazing as well. I will be recommending this place to all my sushi loving friends and my boyfriend and I will have a new favorite date night spot from now on.

We’ve only been here for dinner maybe 3 – 4 times. Best tuna(maguro) anywhere in a 30 mile radius. It is a bit pricey, but unlike most other places, it’s fresh tuna, not frozen fake tuna. It’s my favorite place for sure on the penninsula.

Had a great lunch here with the hubs. He had their lunch special with salmon. Definitely a lot of food and assortment for the price. I got the bulgogi roll and it was good. All in all, it’s a quaint spot with friendly, caring staff!

We frequent here at least once a month. Best sushi in town! I won’t go anywhere else! It’s a mom and pop establishment, so don’t expect much as far as décor. We love the tuna! Sometimes it’s sooooo fresh. .you don’t find this everywhere. They are not that cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Came here with co workers and it was definitely a small restaurant but they made up for it with their food. I ordered the miso soup and teriyaki chicken box. They didn’t have an extensive menu for rolls like most restaurants and I believe it’s because they don’t offer those for lunch. While we waited were given some rolls on the house. The miso soup was tasty and the teriyaki chicken was delicious! It came with fried rice, salad, California rolls, and some fried dumplings. Everything was amazing and the service was great. The prices were reasonable and if it wasn’t for the fact that I don’t live in that area I’d become a regular. Don’t let the size fool you they make up for it with delicious entrees.

Great food, excellent hospitality. The beef Teriyaki was so good. We will definitely be regulars. This is the first restaurant that I can remember all that gives you extra food and wants your experience to be a good one.

I have been here a few times over the years and they are fast, friendly and consistent. This last time I came by myself and I sat at the bar. I had miso soup and a spicy tuna roll. It was so yummy. They have a small dining area which is cozy for a couple, a small group of family, or friends. I definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for authentic sushi or Japanese food.

Trying to get a picture uploaded of a Sashimi lunch I had this week. Frickin’ awesome. My opinion NEVER changes over the hundreds, if not over 1,000, times I have been there for lunch and dinner I will figure the picture upload soon. Technically challenged, Marty W

I eat a lot of sushi. I’ve eaten sushi in Japan, and really sushi in America will never, ever taste quite the same as Japanese sushi. It’s not a bad thing! They both have different aims. Japanese sushi tends to be more subtle in flavor, with less sauce(no sauce usually, and maybe a smidge of FRESH wasabi) and smaller portions. I like that, but when I eat at an American sushi place I also appreciate the deep-fried super volcano rolls too! There’s a mayo-soaked place in my heart for deep-fried anything! That being said, Sushi Yama has a bit of both. You get the really hilarious super-sauced rolls with crunchy topping and cream cheese that you eat while giggling, and you also get the absolute BEST sashimi you can possibly get in this area. Just delicious, buttery, fresh fish, sliced perfectly. I also like their nabeyaki udon, it’s sort of a running joke with me because Tami the waitress keeps offering it to me lol :)

I’ve been here a few times the sushi always tastes fresh and is very delicious. Depending on what you get it will add up but no worries it is worth every penny. I would dare to say best sushi in Newport News.
