I had really high hopes for this place, but they were shot down immediately when I got my total for the two of us. Our lunch was over $ 30 and the food was horrible. The bbq chicken sandwich was bland, the bbq sauce was weird, like a flavorless tomato broth. The potato salad was lacking in serious flavor and I don’t even want to discuss the macaroni salad. It was dry macaroni with spring onion and a few diced cucumbers. The baked beans were okay. Maybe canned, with ketchup and mustard mixed in? The turkey croissant was mediocre. Definitely not worth the price. Everything was dry and bland. I will not be coming back. Also, the limeade was good, but you get no refills. The cups don’t hold enough limeade to get you through your dry meal… Go to Paulie’s drive in or to wild wolf for a better meal.

Blue Ridge Pig looks exactly like what a barbeque shack should look like. The copious amounts of porcine decorations confirm that this is indeed a barbeque restaurant and yellowed newspaper clippings from yesteryear establish the pit master’s bona-fides. The weathered building suggests that this is a permanent institution, that this is old style barbeque cooked the same way that it has always been, the way it should always be done. The menu is simple, I didn’t see any options for barbeque sauce and the list of sides is short. And for good reason: the meat is good. It is the reason you’d come to a barbeque restaurant, right? Apparently everyone else thinks so too — I ate outside because the dining rooms were overflowing. I found the pulled pork exceptionally smoky and moist. The serving sizes were large, the price appealing(especially with the plate combo). You have an option to get slaw on the meat — I enjoy this, but it may offend your regional barbeque sensibilities. Oh, and the beans were good too. But let’s not get distracted — you should come here for the pork.

I’ve come here for about 15 years. I tend not to wander from the pulled pork because it has been consistently excellent all that time. The beans are also top-notch. Strawberry is a kind and generous host, giving my girlfriend an enormous leg bone free of charge to make soup with on our most recent visit. This place is a true gem.

We stopped up the road for the real deal but they were sold out. Beggars can’t be choosy so we drove on and stopped here. Early afternoon on a Thursday, the only thing available was the beef sandwich and the tenderloin. Service was helpful and fast but for the price, I will never be hungry enough to return. Tasteless, bland, dry, — not what you want with BBQ or the sides. Old business card décor, cobwebs, and a gross santa covered in dead flies also a big turn off. Sorry.

We came here couple of years ago and loved the place! We were finally in the area again and being huge BBQ fans were excited to come back to the blue ridge pig. I always try to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt since I know a lot of negative reviews are based on the people cooking or serving that day. With that being said, wow were our meals different than I remember! I really can’t explain what the bbq pork and chicken tasted like. I’m one of the least picky people you can imagine and it was all I could stomach to eat half of the sandwich. My wife ate a few bites of hers and had to throw it away. The coleslaw wasn’t anything that I remember and I could only take a couple bites of it. I’ve only ever found a few places that made good potato salad so I wasn’t surprised by the way that tasted but man, what an unexpected disappointment! I gave them 3 stars because it’s still a really neat little place and I love little rustic places like that. I’m not a big reviewer but the only reason I’m writing a review is because I really hope that they get back to the way I remember. Hopefully they were just having an off day and will be better next time we try it!

If I could give this place a zero I would. Anyone who says this bbq is good clearly has never had good bbq and is lacking taste buds. I got the chicken bbq sandwich, potato salad, and cole slaw. The chicken was incredibly dry and the sauce had no real taste to it. The potato salad was the ONLY decent thing but was super oily. As for the slaw, the only word I have to describe it is mustard. It tastes like cabbage soaked in mustard. My boyfriend got the pork bbq sandwich, potato salad, and the baked beans. All of which he said was disgusting, I didn’t bother tasting it. All of that together was a total of $ 25 and it was the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. More than ¾ of the food was completely wasted.

CASHONLY!!! Ya’ll hear me? If you’re like us, you usually only carry plastic, so if you drive all the way to this out-of-the-way place and don’t have enough cash on you, you’ll have to make a sizable donation to the Swear Jar after driving around Nellysford to find an ATM. Hopefully, I’ve saved some of you that hassle. We ordered: 2 smoked turkey croissants, 1 ham croissant, 1 pint of baked beans, ½ pint of macaroni salad, and a large(yet tiny) sweet tea. $ 39. Did I mention they accept CASHONLY? They charge extra for ‘the works’ on their sandwiches, which as of this writing is an extra .45 cents per tomato/lettuce/mayo/etc. Cheese is an extra .55 cents. Those add-ons do add up, and we found out the hard way that it would have been cheaper to order by the ‘plate’ rather than rack up the extra sides(beans, macaroni salad) by ordering them separately. We ordered take-out over the phone & didn’t get the prices ahead of time, so we didn’t realize this until it was too late, which was kind of a shock when we arrived twice for the bill. We arrived twice since we had to hunt down that ATM. I posted an updated menu in the photo section. Now, for the food: the ham was very salty, but moist & tasty. I liked it on the croissant, which was a nice touch. The turkey was unfortunately dry & tasteless, but the dill sauce really adds a nice touch & many people rave about it. We were very disappointed with the baked beans, they seem to just be Van de Kamps with smoked meat & vinegar added, which didn’t work as well as it sounds. They should have been packed with flavor, but were very bland – although the meat was great. It just needed a kick of flavor, tomato or BBQ sauce would be a welcome touch. Macaroni salad: lacked flavor, also. Sweet tea: $ 2 for a large, but it was only about 10 oz. It was good. Would we go back? We are locals that had gone here once years ago, and forgot why we haven’t gone here more often. Now we remember. But I would like to try their ‘pig salad’ which I assume is ham salad; and would also like to try their BBQ chicken. The croissants were enjoyable. All in all, we are native southerners who know great BBQ, and are still on the Great VABBQ Quest. If anyone has any suggestions for us, pls message me? Thanks. I’m posting a picture of their updated menu, as of this writing 06/03/2015. And did I mention? CASHONLY!

The Blue Ridge Pig is a «rustic, yet sophisticated»(The Washington Post) barbecue place located in a small shack in Nellysford, VA. It’s next to Basic Necessities, which is a nice shop. Anyways, B.R.P. has great barbecue on toasted kaiser rolls. The owner and chef, Strawberry, is very good at what he does, and it looks like he’s been doing it for a long time. I had a barbecue pork sandwich with cole slaw on the side. The sandwich was GREAT, but they put the cole slaw on the sandwich, which is a traditional things, even though I asked for it on the side. It was all good though. I would’ve given a 5-star rating, but they messed up the cole slaw. I’ll be sure to go back, no doubt!

Rustic roadside BBQ joint, just like I like ‘em. Ate outside at the picnic tables next to the smoker. Unfortunately the BBQ sandwich was so over sauced the bun couldn’t handle all the moisture and got goopy. The dill turkey croissant on the other hand, was awesome. A week later and I’m still craving one. I really enjoyed their vinegar potato salad too. Would skip the BBQ next time and go straight for the croissants!

First came to Blue ridge Pig in Mid-80s and it was pretty good ‘Q. However, after 30 years my tastes have matured and other BBQ joints have come on the scene with some great bbq. In addition, many of us are now doing our own home-made rubs and sauces and slow-cooking our own for some magnificent cue. Which leads me to my two stars: while others have improved their ‘Q by milestones, the Blue Ridge Pig is stuck in the past… not a good thing for bbq gourmands.

Been to the Blue Ridge Pig and was not disappointed! Everything was D-E-LICIOUS! I’ve tried numerous places in the DC/MD/VA region who claim they know what they’re doing behind a smoke stack but it almost inevitably leads to disappointment. But then again they are northerners so… Even went to the Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ festival in Tysons Corner, only one was worthy to be called BBQ and that was the«Smokin Jarhead». An independent who outshined/outsmoked every other competitor there. Sorry got off topic. The Blue Ridge Pig always delivers and the flavor is among the best I’ve eaten. I’ve had my share of smoke licked meats throughout the Great South and some were really good but the Blue Ridge Pig stands out and offers the full experience from the ambience, to the smoke house out back, to the sides, to the jugs of sweet tea, and the plethora of cuts! We hope to see you soon this fall Strawberry! Semper Fi!

Delicious smoked meats. The barbecue is good but it is the kind that is tomato based. If you are like me, you prefer the vinegar based Carolina style. Loved their barbecued chicken. Their baked beans are the best I have ever had, full of yummy smoked meat. best for take out since seating is limited. Very down to earth, friendly service.

This place puts the double«ick» in «rustic sophistication.» Everything tasted the same, and that’s not a good thing. if you do make the mistake of getting food here, do take out.

Vacationing at Wintergreen for the Memorial Day weekend. Craving some good barbecue and this place stood out on Unilocal as a local gem. No so much… small, quaint or cruddy? You be the judge, if you make the same mistake. Put it this way… we ate outside at the picnic tables, next to the carwash… rather that stay inside the dark and dirty looking interior. Pulled pork platters with beans and potato salad. Meat was basically tasteless and not seasoned at all. The sauce… what there was of it, didn’t add anything to the flavor. Potato salad, with green pickle juice on it, was interesting, but both my girlfriend and I ate less than half of it. The beans again were forgettable. Seriously…save your money… get your barbecue somewhere else and leave this place to the locals, who must be used to it.

Albert Einstein once said«Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried to barbecue anything.» This locally owned BBQ joint has lots of great character inside and outside as well as the food. Inside is very small, maybe three tables total with 2 decades of business cards on the walls everywhere along with piggy décor everywhere around. On the menu is BBQ beef, pork, chicken, ribs & country ham. Shoot, if you like they will even smoke a whole chicken, ham or turkey for you. The sides are pretty much limited to baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad or macaroni salad and occasionally a special side will be available. On this recent visit I had the barbecue chicken sandwich with baked beans and potato salad. I really like the BBQ chicken. It is made with a tomato sauce that reminds me of a Kansas City style sauce with a little vinegar. The baked beans do in fact smell of a wonderful smoke. In truth, I did not like the BBQ pork here. But I do admire the effort that goes into the food. Food C Staff B Décor A Location C(small parking lot) Health Inspection Grade A

I was out in the area doing some hiking and the place I was staying recommended Blue Ridge Pig for some barbecue, and the barbecue here was above average. I had the pulled pork barbecue plate. First, the sandwich was enormous. It was served on a kaiser roll which is a little unusual but turned out to be a good idea because it held up to the soft, juicy meat well. The meat flavor stood out with a touch of smoke and the sauce was understated with only a hint of vinegar. Not too much to say about the sides of potato salad and baked beans, which were on the bland side, but you don’t go to a barbecue joint for the potato salad. Next time I’m in the area, I will be stopping in.
