Desmond, Our conversation the other day conjured up some grand old memories of some fine wine dinners and tastings. As I mentioned I co-founded the Savannah Wine Club and hosted several meetings at our B&B on Broughton St. Russell Krautheim, then a somm at The First City Club and rep for American Wholesalers and I started the group which lasted a few years until my departure from Savannah. Well it was good meeting you and hope to be «neighbors» if I can rent or sub-let some space in the complex. Will bring the wife back when I have more time to review all the fine wine you have laid down. You may enjoy perusing our wine lists and dinners and some luminaries that attended. Was able to save most of the archive before AOL shut it down… Cheers, Yusuf(JP) Saleeby, MD 800.965.8482

Great place! Des, Betsy and Jesse are awesome people and I recommend them to everyone in Charleston for wine. I don’t drink much, but when I do I always ask for recommendations and i’m never not satisfied with my purchase.

Absolutely the best place to buy wine in Charleston. My husband and I only go here for our wine selection. Desmond always knows what we would enjoy. Great wine, great prices!

Desmond is very knowledgeable. The place just celebrated its sixth year so you know they’re doing something right. Very good wines at reasonable prices. Don’t miss their Friday afternoon wine tastings.

The owner Desmond is now my new wine connection. He is very knowledgable and helped me find a great bottle of Australian wine.

The best place to buy wine in Mt. Pleasant! Shop proprietor Des, knows his stuff. Having spent several years living in the midst of California wine country I can totally vouch for his amazing selection and knowledge. You don’t have to be an aficionado to hang out here. Des will teach you as much as you want to know about wine. He has a talent for finding out what wine works best for people and can always recommend several wines to fit your taste. Be sure to check out his Friday wine tastings from 5−7pm for a chance to taste and learn about some great wines. You might even get to meet a few winemaker’s and vineyard owners in the process. Salut!

I’ve been looking for some inspiration to get back into the Unilocal game. On a mission to pick up a bottle for a dinner date tomorrow night, I was looking for an alternative to Bottles and Total Wine and More. Thanks to Tommy V., Crushed came to the top of the list of options. The fact that they have Friday night tastings sealed the deal. When Des flagged us down on entry, the inspiration was on. He clearly sees us as new to the shop, and with the crowd that was packed into the place, we needed some guidance. This is a popular event. The vibe was excellent. I ran into friends tonight that I met for the first time. The bottom line is that Des is passionate about what he does. He carries great wines, stuff that is usually featured on restaurant wine lists, most likely not what you’d find in an average wine section. I told him what we liked and he picked a couple of bottles that were very reasonably priced. This place is very highly recommended. I’ve found my wine spot. Period. See you on Friday…

The GF and I have had a great time at the wine tastings we’ve attended over the past several weeks; always with a great, relaxed vibe. There’s even a small, but charming, patio in the back. We’re starting to get to know some of the regulars — and slowly working on becoming some ourselves! We’ve never felt the slightest bit of pressure to buy anything, but we’re always happy with our purchases when we are able to. One of the really neat things about Crushed is that the wines on display are arranged according to broad taste ranges, rather than specific varieties or regions. This is especially helpful for novice drinkers, who may only have a vague notion of what flavors they do or don’t prefer. For experienced drinkers, it encourages explorations of new wines that may have characteristics similar to your longtime favorites. While there may be a fee for special occasions, there hasn’t been a fee for any of the regular Friday tastings we’ve attended for several months now.

There’s no doubt about it, Crushed is the wine shop I call home. Des and Betsy are great. Des listens to what you like and gives great recommendations. His Friday tastings(5pm-7pm, $ 5) are the best in town. He pours very good wines, sometimes stupendous wines. He uses serious glasses and the distributors who pour are friendly and fun. He’s had several tastings with the winemakers pouring their own wines, which is always a cool experience. He sends out emails every week about the upcoming tasting(there’s a sign-up form on their website). He has wines you don’t find anywhere else and he gets new wines in regularly. The prices are sometimes a dollar or two more than other stores, but the service is the best. That said, he does have great wines around $ 8 to $ 12(I like the Domaine Lignères wines and the In Fine Rosé). Go to Crushed, you’ll find good wine!
