Love, love, love Sally and the team at Southern Exposure. They are as authentic and friendly as they are magnificently talented. To miss the opportunity to receive a new cut, skin care consultation, or any other amazing service from them while visiting lovely Mendocino should be a punishable offense.
I have been going back to Sally for over 15 years now. I live in SF, and was spending embarrassing quantities of cash at Vidal and the like. Sally is the one who nails the cuts perfectly, every time, at an utterly reasonable price and without the thumping electronica or insufferable attitude. Just relaxing music, honest conversation, and a view of rolling seas and coasting seagulls.
Gotta try the Eminence skin care products, too. Organic, luxurious, and… they work. Period. Worth the investment. It’s your face, after all. Let Sally advise you on what is just right for you and do some serious self-​care. I took the plunge and I absolutely love it.

We were visiting for a long weekend and I came across this salon on Unilocal.I had called a few places to schedule a facial but after seeing that this place carries Eminence (a line I really love and actually discovered in Texas), I was sold on getting something scheduled here. Sally was friendly and quick to accommodate my uncertain schedule. She greeted me when I got there, and quickly assessed my skin and needs. She explained each step she took, and we conversed about how she got into this business, how she came across Eminence (because she wanted to use a line that contained nothing she couldn’t eat herself), and why she loves Mendocino. She’s also a nutritionist and gave me some pointers on how to take care of my skin through my diet. If I’m ever back in Mendocino (which is likely because I absolutely loved the town), I will certainly return to get a facial with Sally!

I had a great experience with Sally. I got a bridal facial, hair consultations, and my bridal hair and make-​up. She listened to my needs and was patient as I change my mind a few times. She is great with sensitive skin for facials and make-​up. After her facial my skin never looked better. Thank you so much!

In nearly every area of wedding planning — flowers, food, cake, music, etc. — I was a calm and easygoing bride. In the arena of hair and makeup, I was as high-​maintenance as it comes. Embarrassingly indecisive and picky, I traveled to Mendocino from the Bay Area, not once, twice, but three times for hair and makeup trials, and throughout it all, Sally at Southern Exposure was amazing. She was patient and calm, and despite having tremendous more knowledge and skill than I, she listened to what I wanted and made adjustment after adjustment to bring the vague and evolving vision of perfection in my head to reality. On the morning of the wedding, Sally worked her magic and stunned me with the result. And to my absolute amazement, my hair and makeup remained perfect all day — twelve and a half hours! I also really appreciated that Sally uses 100% natural makeup. There is a beautiful ocean view from her salon and a wonderful vibe to go with it. I could not have been happier with the experience.

Sally did my hair and makeup for my wedding. She did a wonderful job. I was worried about my naturally curly hair frizzing in all the fog, but my hair looked amazing and lasted all day with no frizz. I asked her to make my makeup look natural (I hate the caked-​on look), and she did just that. She chose some awkward topics of conversation for a wedding day, but as far as her skills go, I cannot complain! A great place for hair & makeup!

We came up to Mendocino for my bday and I really wanted either a massage or a facial. I picked a facial because it seemed more bang for the buck because I would get a clean face and maybe some blackheads removed :)
What I experienced from Sally was beyond anything I ever thought! It felt like a massage in its entirety, as it was very relaxing and calming! Of course there was some pain to be had with blackheads been removed, but that was ok! She also trimmed my eye brows! I’ve never had that done before! They turned out great!
As much as sally focused on my facial she also spent a lot of time on neck/​shoulder massage, arms and hands, and feet and legs! It was like everything I wanted wrapped into one session!
As a bonus she washed and blow-​dryed my hair! Also the price seemed very fair and she spent a lot of time as well! Not to mention the extras like the eye brows, all the massaging, and the hair wash at the end! It was just under two hours and I enjoyed every minute! And it was also worth every penny!
If your coming to Mendocino or live here I highly recommend this place!

I went to see Sally at Southern Exposure on a recent very stormy weekend. My boyfriend and I had come up to Mendocino from the East Bay for a special Valentine’s getway, and he wanted to treat me to «every spa treatment I wanted.» I called all the spas, trying to cobble together my ideal spa menu from one place and another, until I reached Sally. She was totally flexible and willing to put together a customized treatment that was exactly what I wanted. She technically does not offer massage, but each treatment she does includes plenty of massage. I’ve had a lot of massages over the years, and Sally has the strongest hands I’ve ever encountered — in a good way! Her many years of experience is very clear in the way she intuitively works on exactly what you need and where you need it. She gave me an awesome facial, a back treatment that was the best I’ve ever had, and a scalp treatment tailored to my requests. I was snugly cocooned in her warm spa/​massage table while rain poured down outside. Sally clearly cares about taking care of people on their own terms and about really giving you your money’s worth. When you call her don’t be shy about asking for something special or different. She can do it all and you won’t be disappointed!

Made an appointment in advance and it was more worth it than I could ever express. The spa is really interesting and warm. I watched birds play in a bath while I got my hair done. Awesome.
Sally made my wedding experience just that much more wonderful and less stressful. The day before I got the Bride Facial which was sublime. The products were delicious and she has a really nice touch. I was anxious for hair and makeup the following day but by the end of my appt I totally trusted Sally.
The next day, the BIG day. I sat in her chair and was totally relaxed as her personality is calming yet fun at the same time. I watched her do miracles with my hair. I can’t do it justice by talking about it so I am posting a pic.
The makeup was natural yet breathtaking. She used a mineral line with no chemicals that felt light. She used tones and colors that I would have chosen. She also used a cream with Chinese herbs to help with my eczema/​redness. It is amazing. I had to buy some.
She knows what she’s doing, she has had this place for 30 years. I will definitely stop by again the next time I’m in Mendocino. Thank you thank you thank you :)

We were pretty much told that «it wasn’t the place for us, so leave» I get that it is an «alternative» spa place, but sheeesh!
We never totally established if the lady behind the desk who consulted the calender briefly before shewing us away actually worked there, she had foil and dye in her hair at the time, maybe she was just a client who really didn’t want to share her hairdresser?
