California Sushi & Teriyaki

Formerly the location of Pioneer Chicken, then a Chinese fast food place, California Sushi & Teriyaki serves fast Japanese food in the city of Lakewood. I was looking for lunch that was cool in temperature on a warm Saturday in April, so sushi was the first thing that popped into my mind. Yasai Japanese Grill is my usual go-​to fast sushi place, but I wanted to venture out and try something different. Not to mention have another business to review. Up comes California Sushi & Teriyaki to the plate.
Arriving inside, I was greeted by a nice lady taking orders. Perusing the menu items on display, I decided upon the super maki special.
Super maki special–
5 pieces crunch roll, 5 pieces California roll & 5 pieces spicy tuna roll. The rolls were about average size, rolled nicely as to not fall apart when dipped in soy sauce. Not bad, but nothing extraordinary.
Unfortunately, the nigiri & rolls come by themselves. Miso soup & edamame aren’t included. Which, to me, is a real bummer, because other places do offer bonus items to go with sushi.
Besides sushi, California Sushi & Teriyaki has, you guessed it, teriyaki. I checked out the teriyaki plates & bowls and they seemed like a good amount of food for the price. The restaurant also has udon soup that is supposed to be pretty good, from what I hear.
A fair amount of seating inside. Expect the same amount of seats as you’d find at a Popeye’s. Service was good. The woman working the register let me use the sole restroom in the kitchen.
Parking is in a private lot, shared by Salon Allure, an orthodontist, McDonald’s and other businesses.
For sushi, I don’t think California Sushi & Teriyaki would be my first bet. While the Super maki special served it’s purpose, not having soup, salad and/​or edamame to go with it left me disappointed. The teriyaki & udon, on the other hand, look like they might entice me to try another visit here. I live really closeby, and the chewy bite of udon noodles is something I’m mighty looking forward to. So, I’ll be back for sure.

ordered the tempura udon bowl. not the best tasting ive had. a wee bit overpriced. other places serve better tempura udon. their udon bowl taste a bit like the instant ones you get at the supermarket.

First and last time here. One word disgusting. The beef was chewy, the chicken was burnt. Flies roaming around, just no. No no no. Not worth the money.

They have a lot of healthy options for a good price. I love having this so close by. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I’m not a sushi fan but their California rolls, tuna rolls and veggie rolls are really good, the salads are huge and delicious and all of the bowls are amazing.

Food is consistent and pretty decent. Pricing is spot on. Usually get the 31 (breast meat) or 32 with a double scoop of macaroni salad (in true fat guy style). The sushi is passable, don’t come and expect to get super high quality for this price. It is pretty good though. Service is always good, the ladies always have a smile on their faces.

First off, thank you for being open regular hrs on christmas eve for us working people.
This was my first time here but not my last. The food and employee’s were both great. I will be back soon.

I’ve been to this place many times, & I would say it’s a decent place to get economy grade sushi. Unfortunately I just had a very bad experience there.
I ordered sushi with eel, and the eel was definitely not fresh and full of bones. I returned the food, they remade it with the exact same eel.
I had lost my appetite and began to leave and told the cashier the situation. She looked at me and said «sorry»…no offer to refund my money or to make something else, and I walked out.
I am now starting to feel the symptoms of food poisoning as I write this :-(
I gave them two stars for the many times I’ve been there without issue, but this experience will keep me out of there for good.

I came back after a long hiatus after a bad experience, to my welcomed surprise everything is looking good new staff and good food.
I loved seeing smiles on the staff. And a super clean restaurant.

Well i really wanted to like this place because it’s right around the corner from my house and i just love me some good teriyaki. So upon entering and reading the menu I noticed that the prices are pretty much the same as every other teri spot which is a good thing, i order chicken and beef combo and cal roll and total comes out to $ 15 bucks so im thinking hope this is good and here i am now eating food. Roll is ok nothing special kinda bland but then again I wasn’t expecting much so no big deal. But what i noticed was that the meat in the teri is all kinda chewy so basically cheap meat topped with somewhat funky kinda teriyaki sauce. So all in all so-​so food with a high price oh yeah forgot a soda so $ 2 more now my dinner cost me like $ 17 and some change kinda want a lil better quality for that price !!

Love this place the sushi is really great and the chicken and teriyaki bowls are just as great!

This place is delicious my family and I eat here for dinner about twice per month. The chicken teriyaki is great the sauce is good. I also love the sandwiches they have beef and chicken. The sushi is also very fresh and yummy too. I always order the Mexico City roll and my kids
Order the California rolls. If you get the bento boxes you get a little sample of everything: the teriyaki, ca rolls, and tempura. The bento boxes are a good idea if you can’t decide what you want.
Customer service is always fast and friendly. You can eat there or order to go. Family atmosphere!

Love this place I have been coming here for many years, can’t complain of anything huge portions and great price!

Food here is pretty tasty, I am impressed with the teriyaki since it is not just too sweet as some of the run of the mill teriyaki joints serve. I normally get the chicken teriyaki bowl for lunch that comes with a small salad and a miso soup. The chicken is freshly grilled and has a good amount of meat served with the bowl. Rice is well down and never too mushy or dried out. For the low price of $ 6.49 I’m thinking its a great deal. I will surely need to come back and try some of their other stuff since the place always has customers in it and looks like the food is pretty good. Prices are reasonable but I think the lunch specials are the best deal there.

Quick service, large platters, tasty food! I like the macaroni salad and crunch roll! The udon soup is quite tasty, too! For light eaters, the BBQ Salmon Salad is delicious.

I eat here all the time. The food and service is always good. My favorite things to eat here are a #58 (tempura California roll) & a #37 (bbq short ribs) with double macaroni :)

The fish is definitely NOT fresh, I wouldn’t recommend it. Besides that, the bowls & crunch roll are great.

Great food, great atmosphere. The girls are great. Nice portions. Everything tastes fresh.

This is a small place. Kind of almost hidden. I love the food selection. I like how I can order anything from sushi to short ribs. The food is absolutely delicious! Last time I was here I ordered the short ribs. It was so good. It comes with rice, macaroni salad, and salad. The serving was huge!
The only cons I have for this place is the size. It’s quite small. But every time I come here I always seem to find a table, so it’s not too bad. It’s seems a little dirty on the inside also to be honest. I used the restroom and it kind of made me want to barf a little.
With the cons though I probably will be back eventually since the food is really good.

I love this place me and my girlfriend are normal customers all their food is very tasty we have tried many items on their menu, tonight we got the avocado salad and salmon salad along with spring rolls their food is always fresh and taste great also their price cannot be beat!

This place is great! I’ve lived less than 10 minutes away from here my whole life and I finally decided to try it. My boyfriend and I couldn’t decide what to eat until we thought of teriyaki. So of course we Unilocaled it and California Sushi & Teriyaki popped up. At first we were a little unsure because we wanted to make sure that we were getting a good amount of food for a reasonable price. Well we did!
We each ordered a teriyaki bowl, one chicken and one beef, which come with a salad that has super yummy dressing and a miso soup.
We only paid about $ 12 total maybe a little more because of tax but it was worth it! The portions were a perfect size, the food was delicious and it hit the spot. It was also filling enough to not be hungry anymore but not deathly filling where it feels like a brick in your stomach.
They also have sushi rolls which we have yet to try.
At first I was a tad disappointed because the girl only wanted to give us 1 teriyaki sauce but its not even needed. The bowls are marinated with a perfect amount of sauce that if you add more it is overload! We came around 7:30pm and the wait was about 5 – 8 minutes. My only negative was the fact that the miso soup wasn’t filled up all the way, only about ¾.
