I had an expired Groupon for this place. I’m not big on trying out bars where I don’t know anyone, but this turned out to be an okay experience. I dragged by bestie with me and we had lunch here. The bartender was friendly enough. We ordered HUGE tenderloins with fries. Very good! Very generous.

Working in North Kansas City, my usual go-to for after work drinks has been Helen’s JAD near NKC Hospital. However, I think the Moxie has stolen my heart. The Moxie is everything that the JAD is: divey, cheap and of questionable taste. However, it is so much more. namely: CLEAN and with no lines! I’ve been here a few times now for Happy Hours(so early weekday evenings) which may be before the«regular» crowd arrives and gotta say I love that there is rarely a crowd. A few times, my group has been the only one there. The staff is always SUPER friendly to us and fun to chat with and while I’m not sure if there is happy hour pricing or not, the prices are really cheap! I’ve had a few of the appetizers and they are the typical greasy bar food goodness, but nothing crazy. The only downside is that the parking lot is tiny(is there more around back?) and the«smoking room» doesn’t do a very good job of keeping the smoke in.

Looking at the 4+ star reviews and clearly most of them are older. I can’t recommend going during the week, that’s for sure. Most of the clientele is very cliquesh, and heaven forbid you enter their realm. Happy hour is supposed to end at 10:00, but it apparently ends anytime BEFORE10:00(even 9:30!). The bartender was polite other than that. The women’s bathroom was disgusting, as some men had clearly used it and made quite a mess all over… and this was on a weeknight. Definitely ranks below ‘dive’ bar. As for being in central Kansas, ummmm, no. Of all the bars I’ve been to in Kansas, not one ranks this low on friendliness or cleanliness.

If this bar was transplanted to central Missouri or Kansas, it would fit in perfectly. It is definitely a quintessential Midwest bar complete with cheap beer and friendly, interesting clientele. We enjoyed the three pool tables near the back, and a DJ comes in on the weekends. 22oz premium beers are $ 4 til 10pm every night, which was a great deal but the cheap Long Island Tea pitchers were tart rather than tasty. The food is typical bar food with an emphasis on frying. The Buffalo Chicken Wrap was tasty, and unfortunately the BBQ is no longer an option. The owner said he will start offering pizzas this summer, which might be a nice addition. Overall, I likely wouldn’t come here on my own, but the cheap beers and interesting people watching made for an enjoyable evening.

Three reasons why you should go to Moxie Bar and Grill 1. Cheap drinks 2. Pool Tables 3. Excellent BBQ Need I say more? Well if you insist. I stumbled upon this place when I was planning my boyfriend’s surprise party. We decided to go out and take a look before committing to any particular location, and I couldn’t be happier that we did I admit I was little concerned when we arrived to an empty parking lot at 8pm on a Saturday night. Those concerns were soon laid to rest once we stepped inside. Moxie is a throw back to what a good neighborhood«dive» bar is supposed to be. Cheap drinks, which include 22oz glasses of beer for $ 4 and some of the best drink specials I’ve seen anywhere in the Metro, including Daily Happy hour specials. Friendly environment with very attentive staff Decent pool tables set apart from the rest of the bar providing a nice flow for those there to do more than just drink. If all of these things weren’t enough, we discovered Moxie’s has something most«dive» bars only dream of, — a really good food menu and some of the best BBQ in KC. I really cant say enough about the BBQ at Moxie, tender juicy meat brought to you w/a carousel of sauces to ensure you get just the flavor you want; delicious baked beans; good fries and the potato salad and coleslaw, seemingly unimpressive sides, were anything but. Friday and Saturday night women get three(3) free drinks between 10 – 12 when they pay a $ 2 cover. Located a mere 6 minutes from Downtown KC, right across the river on Hwy. 9. What is not to love about Moxie’s? Nothing!

Great little neighborhood bar. Its under a new owner so it has a new menu and drink specials. I come here often during the week as that is when you get the best service. The weekend nights get a litte bit out of control but if your in for people watching you won’t beat it here! The drink prices are super cheap and the new food menu is pretty good. If your looking for great bartenders and cheap drinks give Moxie a try.

The drinks just don’t get any cheaper folks. $ 1 Wells & $ 3 jagey-bombs. Plan to call a cab if you go out drinking here! The only negative I have is that the place is starting to look a little run down, just little things here & there, bathrooms, etc… it could use a facelift. But then maybe the drink prices would go up? LOL… I have been going here off & on for about 6 years now. I hear the crowd can get a little rough & rowdy late at night on the weekends — as in douchebags who wanna start fights — but it’s a fantastic place for happy hour or mid-day weekend drinkin! :-)

Came here with my buddies on a weeknight. I mostly agree with other reviews. Food was decent, service was quick. Cheap wells, but my buddy ordered whiskey and coke, and got a scotch and coke. Asked the bartender about it, and he said, «for a dollar who can complain». Indeed. Keep your expectations low, and this bar won’t disappoint. It ain’t power and light, but it doesn’t pretend to be.

Cheap, a dive, and open late. What more could a person ask for. Okay, a few of the patrons are a little«rough», but they are still okay. The location is okay, but what makes it great is it’s cheap and it’s a total and complete dive! Life is good when well drinks are a dollar, life is better when they«hand pour» and life is outstanding when you get off work at 11:00PM and you have a dive bar with cheap drinks still open! Rock on Moxie… and I look forward to seeing you all there!

Ok, so this review must be prefaced with a few important details: 1. I am a Chicago native who was working in KC when frequenting this bar, who has since returned to Chicago. 2. I am a fan of dives. 3. I’m not a beer guy. You know you’ve found yourself in a good place, when after your first day of work in a new city, you are taken to Moxie. Of course, it doesn’t hit you that you and all your co-workers called it «Moxie’s» for months, until you’re back in your home city and writing a review on Unilocal, but I digress. What can I say about Moxie? How about $ 1 double-well drinks during happy hour. Worried about prices escalating after happy hour? Well, they go up to $ 2…The lesson: Drinks here are cheap cheap cheap! There are pool tables, a decent juke box, and an out of place dance floor that serves to make everyone uncomfortable when 1am rolls around and the class of the Midwest are grinding away in front of everyone. The service is fast, friendly, and if you become a regular, they’ll definitely recognize you. Speaking of servers, my favorite Moxie moment was when I tried to order a Whiskey & Ginger(little did I know, NOWHERE in Kansas City has ginger ale): I asked for a Whiskey and Ginger, and the server says she doesn’t have ginger ale. Before I can switch it to coke, she offers up to make it anyway(mixing coke & sprite is an effective substitute). I told her that’d be great and she heads back to the bar. While walking away, she turns around says to me: «You know what honey, what kind of woman would I be if I couldn’t fake it?» My big knock on Moxie is that the kitchen was never open when I went. Not once. Didn’t matter what time of day/night it was, it was always closed. I know for a fact they serve food, I’m just sad I never got to try any.
