Ehhhhh. I love sushi, and Kumo is a good option when I want decent sushi really cheap. I’ve gotten takeout a few times from Kumo but I probably won’t be back after the most recent time. I called and ordered a shrimp and avocado roll, spicy california roll, and a salmon tempura roll with no tobiko and they said it would be ready in 15 minutes. When I got back to work I found that my salmon roll had tobiko, whatever. I can just pick the insides out. But then I found a hair plastered to one of the rolls. Gross. I ate the other two rolls, they were alright, but I think I’m going to spend the extra money at another sushi place in the future.

I love this place! They have great sushi for a good price and the hibachi is really fun too! They are very clean and have a lot of room. I tried a bunch of sushi places but this one still beats all of them! Love it!

Three words: half price sushi. The sushi is actually pretty good; amazing if you consider the price. The staff is very friendly!

Went for dinner here the other night with my husband and he was so irritated when we walked in at 9 when they close at 10 and the service rolled her eyes and looked at the clock. She rushed us and we were out by 9:27pm. We weren’t the only people there. Service not so great they constantly rush you.

I find it annoying that they have moved to «half price» on all their sushi rolls – why not just change the prices versus letting the consumer think they are getting a deal when in fact it’s just regular price? Anyhow, I have only had sushi/sashimi here and don’t have complaints aside from the above mentioned advertising tactic. No specific roll stands out as fantastic, nor does anything rise up as awful :)

I’ve had sushi here before, so this review is not based on one experience. This past trip left me and a friend with food poisoning. After 24 hours of «losing weight»(nicest way I could put that!) I called them and spoke to 2 different ladies. One called me back after she needed to speak with the manager. She told me that my friend and I needed to get checked out at a clinic to make sure it was due to their food. They offered no other help and was rude beyond belief. I will NEVER go here again and I highly suggest you do not either. Please spread the word.

Kumo is my sushi place of choice in the area, and their hibachi is excellent as well. I’ve never been disappointed by anything I’ve ordered there. Their sushi is consistently among the best in the area, and they do it for approximately half the cost of other businesses. All their regular sushi and sashimi is 50% off, all day every day. That makes it cheaper to eat sushi here than going down the street to all-you-can-eat Sushi Palace — and the sushi here is fabulous.(Personal favorite — Rainbow Roll). Staff is almost always attentive and prompt(I’d say 90% of the time we have excellent service, and the other 10% is average). They’re friendly and easy to work with if you have a special request/modification to your order. The hibachi chefs, too, are excellent, if that’s your thing. The price is about average for hibachi($ 20-$ 30 for your meal, depending on what kind of meal), but it is as delicious as their sushi, and the chefs always put on a good show. Their takeout also qualifies for the 50% deal, if you want to grab and go. Definitely worth a stop(or ten).

I cannot sing the praises of this place high enough. Simply put, Kumos has the best sushi and the cheapest prices. Their sushi is half(yes, HALF) the costs of other sushi places in the area yet manages to blow competition out of the water. The sushi is always fresh, and my favorite tempura rolls are made the best way here. Drinks are relatively cheap, and there is a wide variety of Japanese alcoholic beverages. I come here very often, and would highly recommend this place!

Just tried this place for the first time during Hamden’s Restaurant week and it was very delicious! The outdoor décor really needs some TLC, but the inside is surprisingly different! It’s updated and nice. We tried the gyozas, steak and chicken hibachi, salad, miso soup and ice cream tempura and it was all delicious! I would say that I like the vanilla better than the chocolate just as a heads up on the ice cream! The staff was very friendly and quick to serve us. All and all a great experience! NOTE: I didn’t taste the sushi so I don’t know how that is! It’s pretty decent at the New Haven location!

After reading the many high reviews of Kumo, I feel obligated to report on my own experience there this evening. Allow me to begin by saying that the service was very good; the waitress was attentive and thorough, and we never had to wait long for her to come around to check on us. That said, the rest of this experience was thoroughly disappointing. The fish was mediocre at best. The eel sauce was sugary. The pyramidal presentation of the roll we ordered was peculiar and resulted in an uneven distribution of the contents and topping. The roll was bland, with far more rice than anything else and topped with spicy tuna that wasn’t. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that all the sushi and rolls we ordered were 50% off, but that doesn’t change the fact that I won’t be going back.

I’m updating my review because Kumo has become my sushi place of choice as of late. I don’t know how long this will last(hopefully forever?), but all regular sushi rolls and sashimi are 50% off all day right now, and they have been for at least the last few months. This means that I can get all the sushi I want for a very reasonable price and gorge in the comfort and privacy of my own home. The sushi from Kumo is very good, and I like it a lot more than some of the other sushi in the area. The fish is fresh, there’s not too much rice in the rolls, and you get a lot for what you pay. I haven’t been in love with everything I’ve ever ordered, but I usually stick to tuna and salmon, and those are very good standbys. I also really like the tempura rolls, which count as regular rolls and are also 50% off. The staff is pretty nice whether you’re eating there or getting takeout. I have eaten there, and it’s a fine experience, but at the end of the day, I just like sinking into my couch in front of the TV with a coffee table covered in sushi.

Kumo is solid. They’re one of the many sushi restaurants in the area that’s adopted the«half price rolls every day» pricing plan, which is great for everyone because it brings in more customers and it lets you get more for your hard-earned dollar. Often when I see this sort of «special,» I get the feeling that the price adjustment is an indication of low-quality fish, and while this isn’t the BEST sushi I’ve ever had, it’s absolutely a good deal for the price. The fish is fresh, the rolls are made well, and, for the price, this is probably the best place in the area to get your sushi fix(at least in my experience). My only complaint is that miso soup does not come with every meal here, as it often does in other places. I love miso soup, and it’s annoying to have to pay extra for it, even if I am saving a bunch of money on my rolls. Bonus points because the half-price special also applies to take-out orders!

My Birthday Dinner Party! My husband and special friends had such. Good time at Kumo! A couple if wks ago I was here with the office and it was great. So I asked to celebrate my day here! The food is over the top EXCELLENT in quality and portion. The chef was talented, engaging, entertIning and professional. The staff was attentive and courteous. I can’t wait for someone else’s birthday! As a matter of fact, I probably won’t! Don’t wait! Go here and enjoy!

Fantastic sushi and lunch/dinner boxes for a great price. They recently(within the last month or two) made everything 50% off so the prices are even better. During lunch time regular rolls go from $ 2.00 to $ 4.00(ish). Special rolls are usually between $ 10 and $ 17. The atmosphere isn’t phenomenal, though they did just take out a wall of booths so they may be re-configuring the restaurant and that might change, but its perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. Service is always very quick, there is always parking, and the food has been nothing short of great every time I’ve gone. 5 stars for my favorite restaurant in Hamden.

Love. Kumo. Period. So amaze and the lunch special is to die. Enjoy coming here with my bf and his fam for fun and flirty sushi. The quality isn’t bad(not the best) but the price makes it awesome. I love getting the spicy tuna with avocado and tamago. Also… gotta have a Diet Cole duh

Was in the mood for sushi for lunch and needed a place that would be quick and easy, as well as inexpensive. Found it! We had a menu at work so we chose to order lunch specials from here. Now in the past at other places sushi lunch can take a while so I was a little worried, but when they said 15 minutes before the order was ready I couldn’t believe my ears. We had a relatively medium sized order, and when I went to pick up, the order was ready! I tried the two roll lunch special with the salad and although the salad was good the rolls were really good. For some reason their Boston roll was melt in your mouth deliciousness and I was in heaven. And for the price, the food can’t be beat. The location is right on skiff street in Hamden with plenty of parking. The inside décor is nice and clean, I didn’t spend a lot of time inside but would definitely be back to try sitting inside. Prices are pretty on par with other sushi places. The staff is friendly.

From the outside, there is nothing special about this place. And the inside is rather ordinary too. But the food is above average, and for lunch, the half-price sushi makes this a pretty good deal.(Though its prices are still a little high). For $ 13, I got a spicy white tuna roll and 6 pieces of sushi. Fish tasted fresh and was easy to chew. A very nice texture with a beautiful presentation over the rice. And a little bigger on the fish and smaller on the rice. Nicely done. Enjoyed this place and would consider coming back when in the area.

Note: this is just a rating of the hibachi experience, not their sushi, sashimi, etc. menu. I greatly enjoyed Kumo a lot. The show the chef puts on is fun, with the saki and fried vegetable the chef shoots toward your mouth. Also liked that the TVs(at least at the Hamden location, not sure about the New Haven location) were just in the front half of the restaurant, and not the back where groups sit for the hibachi chef experience, since it encourages conversation within your group and nearby groups. Also a plus that the food still tasted good when I reheated it up a few days later, since there are a lot of places I’ve eaten at where the food very quickly goes bad after you take it home.

The Kumo on Elm Street is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in New Haven. This Hamden location looks like a very different restaurant in terms of atmosphere, or lack thereof, but the food is just as good and the customer service is a bit better here. Hamden does not have much to offer in the way of dining options so this is my default restaurant choice when I’m in the area.
