Love coming here for a quick lunch break. Freshly made sushi on the spot and they offer a great selection of sushi. Lunch special of two rolls for $ 7.99 is something you can’t beat.

I love this sushi place and my husband and I would order out weekly when we were living in the Hamden area. The restaurant is pretty small — a little counter space and a few bar stools — so we mostly did take out. As for the rolls, I can’t comment on the fish /seafood since I’m allergic(bummer), but their teriyaki chicken rolls and sweet potato rolls are delicious. My husband(who is not allergic) enjoyed every roll he ordered, his favorites being the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls. Speaking of allergies, I made sure to mention to the chef that I had allergies each time I placed an order. One day, I happened to arrive a few minutes before my order was ready. He had just finished making my husband’s rolls and was to start on mine. Before doing so, he thoroughly cleaned his work station and knife. I appreciated the effort he made as I have seen sushi chefs in other restaurants just wipe off their knives and call it a day. Oh well, that’s what the Epi-pen is for I guess. If you’re craving sushi, definitely check this place out.

This is the closest sushi place to where I work, so it’s my go-to when it comes to sushi take-out for lunch. It’s not the best sushi, but it’s still very good. The fish is fresh, you can get all your standard rolls and pieces as well as some creative options, and prices are pretty reasonable. I’m a fan of ordering from the lunch specials, or just grabbing a roll or two. Sushi Maki makes some decent regular rolls, and I really like the Hamden Roll, which has shrimp, brie, apple, and avocado. The sushi chef/only guy I’ve ever seen there is very friendly, and whether I call ahead or order there, he gets the orders done pretty quickly. The place is very small, and the only seating is at a tiny counter, but I think most people do take-out. It’s a good place to grab a quick lunch.

very small place; i think it has 4 bar stools in it, which overlook the parking lot. but you dont go there for the ambiance. you go there for the good sushi, at agood price. i only do take out there. the people who own it are very nice, and are there all the time. they recognize you when you become a repeat customer. the price is very fair, esecially the lunch time prices. excellent grade sushi. dont be afraid of the low prices. its only because your not paying for a piece of bamboo on your table and some silly background decorations. space is limited.

This place is so cute! It’s just the sushi chef and his wife in this tiny little restaurant. They have a few seats, but there isn’t much ambience. It’s counter-service only and I think almost all their business is take out. The prices are average, but the sushi is definitely a few notches above what you could get at the supermarket. Almost everything is made to order while you wait, or you can save time by calling ahead. Sushi maki is a great addition to downtown Hamden. This isn’t the best sushi I’ve ever had, but it’s definitely a pretty solid lunch option.

I too was drawn in by the great Unilocal reviews. I have no idea why anyone would rate this place higher than one star. Even made to order everything we got tasted worse than prepackaged rolls from the grocery store. The rice was gummy the vegetables not fresh and the tobeko was just plain fishy I don’t know if it was old or just cheap. Anything tempura was soggy and of our $ 60 worth if rolls, noodles and shumai the lack of flavor was unreal. I agree with Elle save your money! Go somewhere else!

The great reviews this place gave gotten are bizarre to me. From the outside it doesn’t look like much, but having read the uniformly positive Unilocal reviews, I figured this must be some hidden gem. Not exactly. You know the pre-packaged maki and sushi you can get in hospitals and university cafeterias when you want something vaguely light and the alternatives are nasty ‘crispy chicken’ industrial salads? And they’re only just okay(at best), but only cost about 6 bucks? Well, I paid $ 16 for that kind of lunch. It was awful: sweaty sushi, weirdly overly-sweet tamago, rubbery maki. Though I obviously don’t *always* agree with other reviews found here, this is the first Unilocal experience that I can’t even imagine what is on the mind(or palates?) of reviewers. Beware, save your money and go elsewhere.

We stopped here on the way from Boston to NYC. It was amazing. I have been searching for sushi that tastes as good as some I had in Japan over ten years ago. This was as good, maybe better.

I currently live in Boston but I hail from Hamden and whenever I visit the homestead i MUST get the Ichibam roll from here. I have also gotten the spicy scallop roll and the vegetable roll ups and I love it all. The employees are very nice and the sushi is always delish. You must check this place out because finding good sushi in Hamden begins and ends at Sushi Maki.
