Diem Hen Restaurant

we came here last night for late night munchies and beer.
right when you walk in, you’re greeted by the din of a one man band karaōke and a slap in the face with cigarette smoke. yes, folks, they condone smoking in this establishment.
after we walked in, we stood in the front and waited for a server or a hostess to seat us. we looked around but only saw customers. it wasnt until a few minutes later that a server got up and sat us. she actually was dining with her guests. we were sat in the corner table by the restrooms under the speakers.
while having our beers and waiting for our food, we watched old vietnamese guys sing karaōke badly (and loudly) while smoking indoors. gross.
we ordered a whole lot of food. we started off with fried crispy pork intestines. crunchy on the outside and mushy on the inside. still pretty tasty. then we ordered the beef and ong choy salad. the meat was lightly grilled, which gave it a very nice fragerance, and it was mixed with lots of veggies. we also ordered salt and peppered spicy frog legs. this is the best frog legs ive ever had! sooo good! we also ordered escargot steamed with ginger. these guys were ok. kind of sandy, but had nice flavor to them. we ended our meal with rare shrimp with mints. these were good too.
overall, all their food was amazing. they could definitely survive by being a restaurant alone and not a quan nhau. great food, service from the servers suck but the owners/​managers were awesome, the noise level is ridiculous, and smoking indoors is definitely not legal. they could totally turn down their music by a few notches and it’d still be fine. the whole smoking indoors is extremely annoying. i guess they’re afraid they’ll lose their guests if they follow the law and dont allow smoking indoors.
if this was based on service and atmosphere alone, id give them a 1 star… however, their food is excellent and the owners/​managers are very welcoming. 4 stars.

The service is ok but foods is horrible. They serve us frozen clams and the coconut drink is not fresh either. They serve us can coconut drink. Probably would not come back here again.

Service is okay but their food is so so. I would say their food is bellow everage. we went there is because the lau Oc was packed and long line. Probably this was our first and last. Will not comeback again.
