Out of this world traditional sushi… If yer into crazy rolls with crunchy whatnots this is probably not the place for you. If you’re into some of the freshest fish and perfect rice, this is it. Dude and I had the omakase menu tonight and were high fiving one another over the bluefin, blowfish, and toro. Hands down the best sushi in bergen county.

Service was absolutely terrible. Waited an entire dinner and they still couldn’t manage to get us the beer we ordered. The reason? They couldn’t find a cup. The dishes were all sticky. They automatically tacked on 20% tip because it was a party of 6. They didn’t deserve any of it. Food was sub par as well. The sushi wasn’t fresh, portion was small. Soup and rice is supposed to come with entrees, but you have to ASK for it. This place used to be good back in the day, but it’s a waste of time now. I don’t wish that experience upon anyone.

Food was poor quality and menu lacked variety. We got both appetizers(calamari, edamame and more) and sushi(both veggie and eel/salmon). Calamari was overcooked and dripped oil. Edamame lacked flavor. Sushi was very basic like you would get at a quick sushi place. Service was actually courteous. Restaurant itself was stinky from fish frying making sitting there unpleasant. Never coming back.

The service here is not good, and the only reason I keep coming back is the sushi omakase and specials and generally very good for NJ. Tips– Get there early. Order right when you sit down and prepare to wait for a lit bit before your food arrives.

The chef who served me seemed like he really knew how to make good sushi. The sushi was fresh and was free of any tendons. Every one was very friendly, though service was a bit of a lag. One of the best and most authentic sushi places I’ve been to!

Absurd pricing. Unless you are serving fish that literally just came in from the sea, you cannot justify such miniscule portions at these prices. Fooled once. Not again.

We had a party of 4 for dinner tonight, we can’t say how the food was, we waited 10 minutes for our table, as they were fairly busy so this was totally acceptable however, we were led to the proximity of a table and the hostess kept walking past to some folks a table away and started visiting with them without saying a word to us. We sat at our table for 15 to 20 minutes without being acknowledged, no water, no other offerings. We got up and headed to the door, no one even looked at us. My wife and I are from Colorado visiting a couple who live down the road from this restaurant and we are extremely disappointed. That is no way to treat customers. We have been here since last Thursday spending a lot of money and being treated very well every place we have been. There is no reason to help this business and you can rest assured my friends who live down the road will not give them another chance and they will tell their friends to not bother going here either!

The quality of the sushi is as good as the high end sushi restaurants in Manhattan. The difference is you pay about half what you would in Manhattan. Mineko H.

This is our local special occasion sushi restaurant. Beautiful décor, the food is prepared with great care, and they have lots of interesting rolls you may not see at a lot of regular sushi places. Not very big inside so keep that in mind if you are planning to go.

Food is very good. The sushi is fresh and well-prepared and their udon is one of the best I’ve had. The space is small and not too many people can be seated so there can be a wait of you do not make a reservation in advance. Points lost for poor service and how slow everything is here. Recommended but make a reservation.

First review of my Unilocal career. I felt compelled enough to write one after my experience here so I think this will be worth reading. I have been going to Umeya for over a decade. Yep, that’s right, 10+ years and the food has been consistently great. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the service. and I get it, the restaurant is a victim of its own success. Some others on the review board referenced the copious amounts of takeout orders that are occupying the time of the employees and that is certainly true. I ordered the Omakase and the traditional set. The food actually did come out in a reasonably timed fashion, but the amount of effort to get the attention of the server was unnecessarily difficult throughout numerous periods of the evening. My biggest gripe started when I ordered an extra Toro(fatty tuna) to go with my Omakase, so that my Mom could have a piece as well. The extra piece that came was not your classic rectangular shape — it looked flayed as if the sushi chef had made a mistake and cut a hole in the fish. Bottom line — it looked messy and unappealing. Naturally, I complained — and by the way, I have been to Japan many times and have eaten at enough high-end Japanese restaurants to know this was not the best cut piece of Toro. The waiter was attentive and assured me that he would come back with a «better» piece. I thought his choice of the word«better» was a result of English clearly not being his first language. In a pleasant surprise, he returns with a piece of Otoro(extra fatty tuna) and says that the chef prepared Otoro because of my dissatisfaction with the previous piece of sushi. Of course, I’m pleased at this point as Otoro is the finest cut of tuna that one can consume. And to their credit, the Otoro and Toro were both exquisite. When we received the check, I was taken back by the fact that they had charged me for the Otoro @ $ 12 and crossed out the Toro @ $ 10. I had asked our server, the poor young man, about why this was. He insisted it was confusion between him and the cashier. Now, I am not a cheap person — and by no means is paying two extra bucks going to rub me the wrong way, but I had to voice my dismay on principle alone. As the young server goes back to check, I can see he is then chastised by an old lady, who I presume to be the manager, about the confusion. The old lady comes by and asks me what the issue is. First, when I elaborated on the issue, she rudely interrupted me twice with defensive comments after asking what the problem was. After I voiced my issue, she told me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the first piece of Toro that had been served to us. She later agreed to change back the price although there was no real apology — just defensive comments about how sushi can be cut that way(which again, I believe to be true for second-rate restaurants, not quality establishments in the city or in Japan). This was certainly not the work of a «shokunin». When the check came out, it still was not changed back to the original price until I again asked and nearly lost my temper. Frankly, if she just fell on her sword(idiom and Japanese cultural reference intended) and said«Sorry, thanks for understanding and we will change the bill», I would’ve been happy and let the poor service slide, but tonight, I left with a truly bad taste in my mouth. All in all, poorly run establishment with inexperienced servers, but an extra star for great food. Take out from here on out. Hope this helps.

Fortunately my food was some of the best sushi and japanese food Ive ever had, but it did not make up from their SHAMEFUL service. I was seated with my group of three and it took somone almost 20 minutes to take our order. By that time we had already decided what we wanted to eat and drink. I was patient, but then our food didnt show up for 45 minutes!!! Take out orders seem to take priority over dine in customers which right there is bad management. When I asked kindly what was taking so long the waiter told me «no one came in last night and tonight we got very busy». No excuse… There seems to be no one in control at this restaurant. I also found it very rude that my waiter used the phrase«no problem» instead of «youre welcome» when I thanked him multiple times… food and atmosphere were good, service was embarassing.

This is by far the best sushi in the area! I’ve eaten sushi all over the country and I can say hands down that this is my favorite spot. I lived in japan for 2 years and this sushi is the closest thing I’ve tasted to authentic Japanese sushi. MUSTTRY! –btw the the owners are amazing and great people to talk to. They’re very friendly and make the experience that much better.

Wow!!! It is owned by real Japanese, not Chinese and Korean. Trust me. It does matter. Waitress and waiter are super friendly and polite. Love the service. Food quality is good. I usually go to East restaurant for Sushi which is close to my home. However, the quality in East is getting worse. I think Umeya will be on my list from now. Small restaurant, fresh Sushi! There are not many options on menu. Food portion is less. But I like the relax environment. Definitely, coming back for second visit.

I came here for the first time with my fiancé and his family and absolutely love this place. The restaurant is small and great for groups of 3 – 6 people. I’ve tried many sushi places before, but I have to say this one is probably one of the best out of all the ones around the area! The staff service was amazing and was fast to pro if for our needs. I ordered a bean curd udon noodle soup and a spicy tuna roll. The spicy tuna roll did not disappoint! There were many times I felt the ‘spiciness’ of the tuna was absence, but this one was made to perfection. Having tasted so many sushis, I can tell the difference between what fresh rice taste like, and let me tell you, they definitely used fresh rice to make their sushi. The udon I had was amazing. The soup was great and the size portions were perfect. Other appetizers I tried were vegetable tempura, shrimp tempura, gyoza, and regular chicken on skewers. I would definitely go back to this place soon and highly recommend those who are in the area looking for a good sushi place. The only downside is that the parking at the restaurant is a bit small and crammed.

Really great sushi here. Not the best I have ever had but well within the top 3. As for the place itself, do not let the décor fool you; sometimes bland walls and dried puffed up blow fish hanging from the ceiling means they focus on food more than decorating. Went on a Wednesday. The place was about half full. I read the other Unilocalers reviews so I expected slow service. But honestly, service was fast. Maybe we got lucky. We ordered a bunch a things and here is the run down. Apps Try me tuna was really good and I would recommend if you like raw tuna. Very fresh, bright colors and no fishy odor whatsoever. Fried oysters. For $ 6 there were only 3 pieces. Normally I complain about high prices, but it was fantastic and I would get it again. Very fresh and the hoisin-like sauce complimented it wonderfully. Rock shrimp. First time I had it and I loved it. The spicy mayo that came with it was out of this world! Very solid appetizer. Dinner Shrimp tempura roll. Best roll I had that night. Fried shrimp was light and the rice was nice and fluffy. It was not loose either so It did not fall apart. I would get this again. Salmon Party Roll. Very good roll. Salmon was excellent. Looked and tasted very fresh. Blue crab with avocado roll. This was my least favorite. It was not bad, but compared to the others, it was not as great. I would get something else next time. Service Service was spot on. Never had an empty beer or plate. Very attentive. The cute old couple who are the chefs and owners of this place were very friendly as well. As I mentioned before, our rock shrimp came with spicy mayo and the server left the sauce on the table for our entrees. Nice touch because my date used it for her rolls. I also liked that the waitress seated everyone proportionally so no tables were next to it each other. I am picky about that sort of thing. I spent $ 105(including tip) for us both. Well worth it for drinks, apps, and rolls. I would recommend if you are in the area.
