I knew their«gyro» tasted a bit off. If you actually read the menu, it’s not a traditional gyro, which is lamb. Theirs is a combo of lamb and beef, so they should really call it a gyro/shawarma sandwich… or a shawyro… I don’t know, it’s just misleading and annoying and not as good as a real gyro.

I love this place! we order lunch from here at least once a week. The Koko’s chopped salad is sooooo good and very fresh. I also have their lemon soup as a side. The greek chicken is tender and you can tell it’s been marinated b/c it’s so juicy. They do tend to be busy during lunch hours so we always call and pre-order.

Delicious! Great prices! Love the chicken shawarma and Greek fries and the Grecian chicken and especially the lemon rice soup! Their potatoes are bomb too! Breakfast is good! Pretty sure nothing here is less than good honestly… Mmmmmmmmmm

This place is nice alternative to all of the Mexican places in the area. I’ve had most things here and they all were decent.

I don’t know why there are some negative reviews. Overall, I thought this place was great. I didn’t expect a grandiose meal, but for what I paid for, I was super full(also, not to mention, my boyfriend and I shared a meal and were both full). We ordered the Chicken Shwarma Plate. It came with lots of chicken, rice, pita, salad, and a side of potatoes(you can choose your side). The chicken was a little dry, but flavorful. The potatoes were very lemony and garlicky, which I enjoyed. We also ordered a side of falafels. Usually, I’m pretty picky about falafels. The worst is when they come out dry, which these were not. I was very satisfied with my meal. We didn’t know what the Saganaki was, so we looked it up. It’s fried cheese, but for some reason I was thinking like melted fried cheese. It was more like a block and hard to eat. I’m not sure if I’ll get that again, but it was interesting. The service is fast and the prices are cheap.

Sorry, but I find no value for the price. $ 10 for some sliced chicken, undercooked fries and soda? Perhaps back in the day the place was better, I’m sure it’s been an institution in the neighborhood, but I certainly didn’t feel it. A weekday at 1030 am, the place wasn’t busy, why cheap out on one of your signature dishes?

Clean on the inside. Bathroom also clean. I had the traditional Gyro sandwich. Nicky had the Gyro salad. I was more impressed with his dish. Basically instead of fries he got a salad. It looked great but he would never let me try his food. He thinks I’ll give him AIDS if I try any of his food. It’s ridiculous! You can’t get aids from sharing food with someone. Besides I don’t even have aids. I spend one night at Berlin Nightclub and he thinks I’m done-bar. I have a right to go out and have fun! He can’t keep me in his house all to himself forever! Give baby bear some air!!! Jeez! Anyway we are still happily in love and will go back to Kokos for more Gyro action!

How one can give more than 1 star? The people are very nice — but the food is… well the people raise it to one star — not the food. Double visit: first and last

Great little spot if you’re looking for a pretty standard gryo on the cheap. I have nothing to complain about, but nothing to rave about either. Pros: Price, fun talkative staff, outdoor seating, several beers on tap including a couple craft options. Cons: Not breaking the mold on anything here.

Excellent food, service, and ambiance! The gyro is to die for and the tsaziki is the best in town. Generous portions and affordable prices. They even serve breakfast and are open late on the weekends.

The place is pretty good. It can be hit or miss. The gyros were good, but the chicken was dry this time around. Still a good place to get some food from that is descent and filling. Will be ordering again.

First thought — I was going to give them 4 stars but than I realized there was nothing wrong for me to take away the 5th star. It’s a gyro joint, and they make awesome gyros. And burgers, and they have cheese sauce that I can get on the side for my fries! How can you go wrong? So back to the gyro — the main reason you should go to this place. The portion of meat is huge. Too much for me but it works out perfectly because I fork what I can’t eat into my boyfriends gyro! The sauce — I forget what it’s called but you know what I’m talking about. It’s the best gyro sauce I’ve ever had. And there is enough on there that you can definitely taste it, unlike other places that hardly put anything on at all. The tomatoes!!! They get exclamation points from me because they’re big wedges of fresh tomatoes. I don’t know how they did it in the middle of winter but they were fresh then too! Per Unilocal,I just«wrote the pants off that review», so I’m gonna go eat the rest of my gyro now!

The food was sufficient. Nothing that I will develop a craving for and honestly with so many other«Mediterranean» restaurants in the neighborhood, I likely won’t be back to Koko’s. I had the Chicken Schwarma Dinner plate(comes with salad, pita bread, rice and«roasted» potatoes or fries). I got the roasted potatoes despite the fact that they were sitting there cafeteria style and we’re not made fresh. In a second life, I’d probably go with the fries. The Salad was probably the best part of the meal which is sad because it was only lettuce and tomatoes. The chicken was a bit on the dry side. As I said it is sufficient and you will not be hungry when you leave but there is nothing special about the food here. I’m pretty surprised that this place has 4.5 stars.

A solid option for a quick, inexpensive, fresh lunch. My friend claims that while it’s quite possibly a pre-made frozen falafel, it’s some of the best he’s had in town. I like that it’s super clean, and they serve beer.

This is what it looks like when a bad and lazy fast food shop closes, the owners go to a restaurant convention to seek the latest trends, and then they re-tool and re-skin their bad fast food shop into a trendy appearing fast food place. No matter how many big screen monitor menu boards they install, no matter how many times they use the color green, the word mediterranean, or say it’s fresh — It can’t ever cover up the fact that this place hasn’t changed at all and remains a horrid and lazy corner-cutting fast food shop. I asked for tsaziki sauce — I got some sort of pestered mayonnaise, yea mayonnaise The Gyros sandwich was insufferably dry and stale with more onions than meat . The chicken combo was made literally days prior to my order and had enough time to turn into an inedible horrorshow of chicken-zombie. The falafel was tantamount to putting charcoal brickettes in your mouth. The hummus was as misguided as a suburban cubs fan drunk on train acting like they own the place whilst peeing on themselves with a ‘I meant to do that’ attitude. The hummus tub came straight from the bargain clearance out-of-date aisle at the restaurant supply store. baba-ganouj — ‘what’s that?, no.‘ You can even see it in one of the pictures here on Unilocal– check that photo of the ‘falafel sandwich’ — it has hamburger pickles on it. There are way too many decent mediterranean and middle-eastern type food places very close to this one to ever put this place into consideration. Go someplace else– not kidding… bag of stale chips from Walgreens a block away blows this place outta the water– no joke. I am absolutely convinced the high-star rating this place seems to garner must be from either drunk-folk or people who simply missed the corner fast food hole and are happy for it’s return.

Koko’s, my new love! Was wandering down Chicago looking for something to eat that was NOT Mexican(since everything else is). Unilocaled this place from the corner and boogied on in once we saw it was 4.5 stars. Well, let me tell you, that 4.5 stars is inaccurate. This place should be a solid 5 stars! We ordered two gyros plates with the oven roasted potatoes. Holy awesome food, Batman. The gyros meat was perfect. The rice was perfect and savory. The potatoes were bursting with flavor.(And I will not name one of the popular Greektown eateries here, but Koko’s potatoes put their potatoes to SHAME.) Most surprisingly, the salad was so fresh, your mama might slap it. No wilted lettuce here, nope. Just a bunch of mouth-watering food in a casual environment. They take credit cards, and the prices are right! We got a lot of food for a decent amount of money. Here’s the best part: they’re open late-night on Fridays and Saturdays, so you get your drink on, then get your gyro on. Get over here.

TASTETESTER My girls were hungry but I wasn’t totally starving. So we stopped in here for a few sandwiches. This location use to be a great dirty greasy spoon place. In fact, this was my go to place for a cheap omelette on Sunday mornings. But that old place is gone and this new clean Mediterranean style place is here. It is the sign of the times in West Town. As the neighborhood gets better the businesses look better. I must say that they did do a nice job with fixing up the place but I do miss my seedly little breakfast dive. We ordered a Cheeseburger and a Chicken shawarma. As the taste tester, I was allowed to secure photos for Unilocal and two bites per sandwich. I believe we negotiated one bite but I used my persuasive charm to get a second bite. The cheeseburger was really good. It tastes exactly like a portillos char burger. If I was a betting man I would even say they get there meat from the same supplier. The taste was very unique. All I could think was my little one was very lucky getting to enjoy that whole burger. I would definitely come back for one of these. My wife had the chicken shawarma and I thought it was good. Is it the best one I’ve ever had? No. Would I order it again from here? Probably not. The sandwich was beautiful and nicely laid out like a gyro but the chicken could have been a little more tastier. The staff was very friendly and it was very crowded the night we came here. The outdoor patio was jam packed full of people. The cooks were working their butts off trying to get food out to everyone. I would like to come back and explore more of the menu. This is one of those places that is still fast food at heart but looks like fast causal. The remodeling job was amazing and it will draw in a nicer crowd. But never forget that his place was once a dirty hole in the wall. The good news is no matter which place it is it’s turning out good fast food.

Solid first outing at Koko’s…and being a five-minute walk from my apartment, I think Koko’s is gonna get a lot of work. First, it’s cheap. You might even say it’s dirty cheap, but it’s a pretty clean space inside. I tried the #1(gyro, fries, soda); my wife did the #2(chicken schwarma, fries, soda). With tax and tip, it was just over $ 18. Me gusta. The food was all-around solid; fries were cooked perfectly, the gyro was served burning hot – perfect if you are taking it to go – and the soda selection worked for me(Coke products, so I could get Fanta, Zero, and Barq’s). These guys are open early for breakfast… and if this can be believed, breakfast looks like the best option in terms of prices, with almost everything under $ 6 and some of those options included pancakes, eggs and toast on the side. It’s early, but I think Koko’s is going to be a permanent addition to the family!

Sure, it’s got a stripper name, but Koko’s Mediterranean Grille is marriage material as far as a midday meal goes. It gets real low with a large menu full of super cheap food and backs it up with everything from gyros to vegetarian fare to even some fairly healthy items. Between breakfast, lunch, and dinner you won’t find anything over 10 bucks, which is way more affordable then any actual stripper I know. The interior isn’t nice enough to bring a date to dine in, but if you’ve got movie and takeout night ahead of you you’re sliding down the right pole. Overall it deserves some of those dolla dolla billz ya’ll so please welcome to the stage… Koko’s!(In strip club DJ voice)

I drove pass Koko’s a few times while they were still in construction and was pretty excited to learn that it was going to be a Mediterranean Grille –I’m always looking for something fresh and different to arrive in the neighborhood. Koko’s is a fast food restaurant which opened Feb. 1 in the former Chicago Carry Out, which closed in June after 30 years in business. Introducing Koko’s! The inside is spacious, clean and contemporary with plenty of seating. They offer a variety of food on their menu: Gyro, kabobs, falafel, hamburgers, wraps, paninis,(with veggie options). They also serve breakfast which is a plus– the Mexican Skillet looked delicious! Nothing on the menu is above $ 10. I finally decided on the gyro plate which comes served with side salad, pita bread, rice pilaf, and oven roasted potatoes OR fries. My husband had the Koko’s combo(gyro, fries and a drink) and a side caesar salad. The plates are huge and everything tasted fresh. The pita bread is very good. The staff is friendly and your order arrives within minutes. I definitely would come here again. A great addition to the neighborhood!
