The address is someone’s house. This is not a public restaurant. It shouldn’t even get one star.

Fork was one of those unexpected gems on the outskirts of Charleston that we just happened to spot on our way back into town from the swamp. Their core business appears to be catering and they just opened the café portion four weeks ago. The atmosphere is bright and cheery, complete with a huge marble-topped farm style table that seats 12 as the centerpiece of dining area as well as bar tables and a couch for lounging. The industrial catering kitchen is open and although it’s cavernous, it doesn’t detract from the front of the house. We settled in at the ginormous farm table strewn with wildflowers and chatted with the friendly staff while we waited for our meal. It felt like we were eating at a friend’s house. The menu can best be described as home cooking, comfort food, traditional Lowcountry specialties and seasonally gourmet, all rolled into one. The menu items are reasonably priced and the options are vast. Lunch selections included pot roast sandwich, oyster po’ boy, meatloaf sandwich, crab cake benedict and fried chicken salad farmer’s market salad. I spied pimiento cheese on the appetizer menu and couldn’t resist. It was served with veggies and bread and was nicely piquant, just the way I like my pimiento cheese. The she crab soup was nicely flavored with sherry and was much different from the version we tried at dinner the night before, confirming what I’d heard that no two places make she crab soup the same way. We split the turkey dinner sandwich, which came loaded with stuffing, cranberry sauce and a side of sage gravy for dipping. The clincher was the orange honey butter slathered on the multigrain bread that provided a sweet and citrusy contrast to the savory elements of the sandwich. The sweet tea was perfect and in true Southern fashion, they offered us to go cup for our drinks. This little spot is truly a find and if I lived in Charleston, It would be on my list of regular haunts.
