David’s great! Very funny! And they have delicious sandwiches and stumptown coffee-you should go.

Pretty nasty people working in here. My order was miscommunicated and instead of taking the philosophy of pleasing the customer I was corrected and told what I had ordered. Once we clarified my order and it was it was established that I was owed money, the cashier walked away knowing full well he owed me money. When he finally came back he looked at me like he was annoyed I was still there. I asked for my change and he gave it to me but he had a very nasty attitude.

Hungry Ghost manages to destroy the deliciousness of Stumptown with a weird watery-but-strong cold brew. I also don’t understand how it’s $ 4 for a small cup. I’ve also had the drip which is bitter and burnt tasting. On both visits two different employees have been so inattentive and lackadaisical it’s almost comic. One would think that the trope of wanna-be hipster baristas had run its natural course. Not here. No eye contact, no «Hello», no «Thank you» after leaving $ 1 in the tip jar. Nothing. I’m not a Midwestern mouth-breather who needs a hug with every transaction either. Avoid.

I really don’t understand the bad reviews on here. I have been coming to Hungry Ghost since it was Prospect Perk(over 5 years). The entire staff is super nice(especially David, alluded to as «greasy d-bag» in other reviews). If you are nice to people, they will be nice to you. End of story. Besides the great coffee and cool staff, I love hungry ghost because they are a great part of our community. The staff looks out for some of the sick and elderly people that live on the block, making sure they are staying healthy and keeping them company on holidays. They make jokes with my kids. They hand out Halloween candy. This is the kind of business we should support in our community. Great job guys and gals!

I came here looking to see if there were any reviews about the«d-bag with the long hair,» sure enough there are and I’m dying laughing. Sure, he sucks but I work in customer service/coffee shops, so I get it. A lot of people in that neighborhood expect their bums to be kissed. This dude is pretty annoying but it is also amusing, bc IDGAF like those yuppies do. I’m no coffee snob either but I enjoy there drip coffee a lot, and they offer a rewards card. For me, I goto hungry ghost, grab my coffee, get a little entertainment from the d-bag and be on my way.

Wow… David sucks. I want to like this place, they have great food and coffee, but David(who shockingly, has now been made the manager I believe) makes this place unbearable. He is rude and condescending to the customers and couldn’t make it more apparent that he hates his job/his life/himself/all of humanity. Reading the other reviews, I can’t fathom why and how he still has a job. Everything the other reviewers have said here is true and more. The economy sucks at the moment and this D-bag is taking a good job away from someone far, far, far more deserving of it.

I can’t stand going in here anymore, the dude with long hair who hates life and tried to suck your soul from you every time your order. I feel bad I really think he should be seeing someone, he should never be allowed to interact with customers and it’s a shame all the other employees have to work with him. I’ve seen him talk down to customers/mock customers/mock employees/belittle employees for things that were misplaced. He’s just an all around awful person to be around if it effects me for 1 minute while I’m in the store I can’t even imagine how it effects his co-workers. I honestly walk into this place and if I seem him I walk right back out, it’s not worth it.

Not sure why all the negative reviews of this place in regards to service. Every person I’ve met behind the counter has been really friendly! All the drinks I’ve gotten have been just fine –I typically get one of three drinks, regular drip coffee, flat white, or cold brew. Just like all the other Hungry Ghost locations, they brew Stumptown beans. The space is definitely smaller than their other location at Bergen just a few blocks up, so this spot is more of a grab and go place for me — although on nice days I do find myself getting work done at the window or reading on the bench outside. As others have mentioned, no wifi at this location. They also have Dough doughnuts(although they sell out pretty early). Their loyalty stamp card can be used across all the Hungry Ghosts. CC is accepted via Square.

Service aimable(la plupart du temps), une sélection très limitée mais bonne, quand tous les ingrédients sont disponibles… bon latte et café, quelques bancs bienvenus à l’extérieur, bref un petit spot vraiment pour dépanner ;)

This is my usual coffee place in the neighborhood. I don’t really care about lack of wifi but there you go. Coffee is decent and its a comfortable place to do some reading. Enjoy the barristas sense of humor. Pastries are decent too. Ill be back.

Hi, I’ve had nothing but pleasant interactions and wonderful service with these folks, been coming here almost a year, but I’m here as my way of saying something that needs to be said and really just about the website Unilocal in general: When you spell out elaborate and offensive descriptions of baristas or what have you that you took issue with using an anonymous username on here, it is cowardly and not directly addressing the problem like talking to a manager. Your words here can drastically affect these people’s lives and it shows a great lack of empathy to come on here and single people out with no respect to if they had had a bad day, had their higher up been coming down on them, or the largest culprit I’ve seen is busyness that can often create problems in communication. If the service you had was rude, then perhaps that does need to be mentioned, but leave it at that. «Service was not friendly» it’s the kind of note that the higher ups can pass to all their employees to improve upon. But if you’re taking someone specifically apart on here in public choosing to embarrass them, you are not showing empathy and not caring whether this will affect them financially and it says more about you being a disgusting coward of a person. Coffee and croissants here are delicious.

GAHHH. They still suck. The coffee still sucks. But it’s still super convenient. If anything, the dudes got more annoying and also grumpier(I thought that was a girl thing – no offense, I was an angsty female barista INMYEARLYTWENTIES so I feel them), and the ladies regressed into full-blown teenagers(lots of eye rolling and disinterest purely for the sake of looking disinterested; I’m talking about you, Mouse-y Baseball Cap Jorts Girl). Shock me, shock me, shock me with that deviant behavior… HOWEVER, there’s a super new girl(black, locks) and they’ve imported that egregiously pleasant blonde girl from the Flatbush spot(Jade, I believe). Those 2 are the ONLY reason I don’t walk directly into traffic every time I leave. They are so nice and they treat me so much like a human that I forget about their cohort mistaking me for a urinal cake. SOBECAUSE I AMOBSESSEDWITHTHE2OFTHEM, I will not dock more stars. Star. Whatever. Unjustifiably grumpy alongside beautifully welcoming, obnoxiously expensive yet confoundingly sub-par. I get it. It’s Brooklyn. We’re into juxtaposition. And that location! Keeps me coming back, and always will.

Came in right before closing and had a decently pulled macchiato. No attitude despite the other reviews here. Stumptown beans behind the bar and for sale.

After reading some of the reviews here, I had to double check and see if I was in the correct place. My service was great. The barista was very knowledgeable about the different coffee they serve. My order was place and ready pretty fast. I don’t live in the area, so I don’t frequent this place, but I would definitely come back or recommend this place.

This place epitomizes the reasons I don’t live in prospect heights any longer. After giving my order and waiting patiently to pay, I started to address the cashier who stopped me in order to begin ringing up a customer who had come in after me simply because he was still in the process of placing his order despite not actually being in line. Of course the customer didn’t say anything knowing full well I was ahead of him so I had to speak up just to pay for my lukewarm latte. After receiving my order, I notice that my cup had the name«Shan» written on it. I suppose with my squinty asian eyes, my actual name of Janet(two syllables beginning with a hard J sound) seems less likely for someone like me. Especially since«Shan» is apparently such a common name. Or maybe that’s what I get for expecting to order a cup of coffee without incident. P. S. This was my first, last, and only visit.

As the star system calls it, «Meh. I’ve experienced better». Ironically, I’ve experienced it right up the street at the second of three of this expanding mini-chain. Sadly, all«Hungry Ghost“s are not created equal. Same great coffee, same really great and friendly staff at this locale. HOWEVER, if you’re looking to do anything but have a coffee and/or a quick bite, go outside and take the B41 a few blocks west, because the Sterling Place address: 1) has NO wifi, 2) NO electrical outlets, 3) NO bathroom, and 4) NO ovens to make their hot sandwiches. And yet nothing in their signage demonstrates that they are anything but the same as their other two venues. Hey, HG: You should let your customers know not to break out their laptops. Unless it is to write a review on Unilocal to inform your customers of the pared-down service you offer here.

Such a nice place. I liked the atmosphere. The music and the interior made me feel like i am on vacation, somewhere out of USA. The food is amazing and the stuff deserves their tip. This is the best coffee place in the neighborhood.

Great coffee and treats if you’re up for battling the staff attitudes. The staff seem as if they hate their jobs.(or you… It’s really hard to know for sure) however, they move pretty quickly so you don’t have to wait long. It’s small inside but there seems to always be a table available.

Is homeboy with the long hair and beard still rolling his eyes? I’ve been to some of the best coffee houses around the country and I have yet to meet this surly a barista. It’s a shame, too; the other employees are friendly(and the staff at the other Hungry Ghost location near Bergen are great). Still, I’ve been here on three occasions now and have heard him going through his I’m-holier-than-thou routine with people during the morning rush. I get it. It’s early. People are groggy and not always clear about their orders — or patient, even. But is the attitude really necessary? Hardly. If you’re really in the mood for espresso in the area, try the folks at Gorilla Coffee; or, if you’re just dying for some Stumptown, the other Hungry Ghost location a few blocks away is, though more crowded, a better bet. But if you’re realllly set on this intersection, then the coffee and espresso are okay. And for those looking to camp here, it’s more of a pick-up-and-go type espresso bar, so seating is limited.

Hungry Ghost IV took over where Prospect Perk used to be — lots of the same great employees, just a different menu. I enjoy having Stumptown lattes that much closer to work ! You’ll notice similar neutral décor to their other locations. Similar delicious baked goods, sandwiches & panini, and a large selection of teas.
