Really love this place. My hair used to be really dead and broken from over processing and Kate C. has really helped me get it back to a place where it’s not only healthy and thicker but looks amazing. Even if I’m not sure what I want to do differently with my hair she can always tell what kind of look I’m going for. All the stylists are really friendly — just love this place! Super affordable too.

LOVED my experience there. Katie G was fantastic and gave me not only a great cut and style but talked to me about how to make my curls happy :) The space itself is adorably kitschy and comfortable. I’m a fan and will definitely be back!

Head Chop is so great. I see Kate Carretta — she’s the best! I’ve been seeing her for awhile now and I honestly don’t trust anyone else with my hair. She’s super friendly and professional and I always leave feeling and looking like a million bucks. Kate cuts my hair and she also recently offered to do something a little special and braided my hair because I was going out after and I got so many compliments. Plus the vibe in there rules. Can’t say enough good things.

This salon has changed my life! I have always had curly hair that I would just tie back or straighten at a Dominican salon. Elma did a dry cut and then explained how to apply all of these amazing devacurl products and then set it. It was a really learning experience. The price is also only $ 80, which is really reasonable. I love this salon!

I’m really delayed with my much needed haircut(planning to go next week) but would like to say that the cut has grown out great, and my hair isn’t mega frizzy anymore! When I brush it out, I get very nice natural Veronica Lake waves.

Awesome hair salon. From the retro décor to my favorite amazing hair cutter Martha, this curly girl loves this salon. Great vibes, I really like the dry cutting hair technique they use here. Really happy with my haircut. They use great Devacurl products too. Recommend them for the great natural curl effect you get, definitely a huge improvement from the drying LA looks gel I was using previously. Kate did a great job with a pin and curl drying set.(this is how you can get your curls naturally styled at the salon, such a rarity for girls with curly hair, where I usually would leave a salon with a frizzed out look I would want to wash out when I got home) Couldn’t recommend this place more. Curl on. :)

I have curly thick hair and the cut was just perfect! They taught me how to style it and what products to use. It was my first time there and I will definitely be back. Best salon I have been to in a very long time and I am extremely picky when it comes to haircuts.

I reallllllly wanted to like it here — I waited over a month for an appointment because of all the good reviews. Unfortunately, I ended up with one of my least favorite haircuts since high school. Pros: 1. Half of my head looks nice. 2. When washing and putting product in my hair she explained exactly what she was doing so that I could replicate it. The routine was also pretty simple and can be done quickly on a daily basis(unlike some of the other«curly hair salons» I have been to). 3. The curls themselves are actually pretty nice and healthy Cons: 1. Half of my head looks horrible. It was cut so that the front and side are about chin length, and the back is below shoulders, with a sharp difference in length. It looks like steps. To their credit, I called them and told them I was unhappy and I was able to come in to get it fixed free of charge. The fix didn’t not help at all, though, and after 2 weeks I am still EXTREMELY unhappy with how my hair looks. I usually wait a decent amount of time in between cuts because they grow out nicely but I think I will have to make another appointment somewhere else to get this fixed. Big bummer.

Hey there Unilocalers(aspirers of a healthy mane)! I would totally recommend you guys to go check out Headchop for the following reasons: 1) if you are a teenager(from 1980s) and would fancy curly bangs 2) if you wish to realllllly(I mean REaLLY) experiment with your hair and not care about how disproportionate the end result could be 3) if you want to get a style that does not align with your face at all 4) and if you want to end up looking like a Christmas tree(then hurry up! To be there right in time for the season). After My first experience getting a haircut at Headchop, I can safely say that it has been the worst haircut I have had in the last decade. Yup! Never again! P. s. I am writing this review after waiting for a week and 4 hair washes later. so this is not a rant

I first heard about HeadChop from an article I was reading online and decided to give them a try. I traveled all the way from the Bronx to Brooklyn for my first appointment and I was NOT disappointed! I had a hair cut service with Katie. Katie was so knowledgeable and seems to have been working with curly hair for YEARS. She is a real curly hair expert. Katie is very friendly and helpful. She answered all my questions and taught me the do’s and don’ts when dealing with curly hair. Katie was also VERY patient with me when it came to deciding how short I wanted to go with my cut. So happy I found this place! I haven’t been this happy with a haircut in a VERYLONGTIME! The space is also very fun. I look forward to many more hair cuts at HeadChop! THANKSKATIE!

This my first review and second visit to the Headchop. Elma is the second time with her. She listens and works along w me to get my hair in style and shape. My hair is corse curly and loose in some parts so my struggle is sometimes of ‘don’t know what to do’ but after my second visit I’m super happy with her. The only thing today was the girl from the cashier was kind irritated I guess or rude don’t know why. Hopefully it was just the weather. However I recommend the place it’s cozy and Elma does work wonders :)

Elma was a great! Friendly and approachable, she had an honest conversation with me about finding the right hairstyle for me. I was very happy with the results of the dry cut and appreciated the care and kindness of the entire staff. Great establishment! Definitely worth a visit — especially for the curly haired!

Best hair cut experience ever! The shop is adorable! Made me feel very cozy and comfortable from the second I walked into this shop. fyi this is not your typical salon; its in the basement, has pretty lights, funky wallpaper/artwork and an awesome music selection… so it’s way better! Now to the important stuff: Curly girls– ELMAIS A HAIRGODDESS! I walked in with a fluffy limp mop of heavy hair and walked out with a super fun, bouncy, curly lob! Elma was not only very kind but was very knowledgeable about hair cuts/styles(duh, she looks awesome) and she gave me plenty of advice and tips on how to hydrate my hair after some damage and what I loved the most– she didn’t cut shorter than needed. I put my hair in her hands and she did a wonderful job! Cut just the right length(with the DRYCUTMETHOD) And comforted me by stating that I didn’t need to go shorter than I’d be comfortable with to get a stylish and healthy look. Then the receptionist/stylist continued to assist me with some more explanation on how to achieve the right curly look with product info and set the final look into place. I don’t remember her name unfortunately but she was blonde and also very nice and knowledgable. Walked me step by step on how to recreate the curls at home. So thankful to her! I also loved how they don’t push their products on you. They teach you and let you go into the world with all this wonderful advice(and great hair). The consultation, cut, wash, style and dry was $ 80 which is very competitive for NYC and I liked that I was told upfront over the phone when I was booking my appointment that the total could start at $ 60 but would not be more than $ 80. Sorry this is lengthy, but I will definitely be going back in the near future to get another haircut and color it too! Look on their Instagram account for photos of their work!

I went here on a friend’s recommendation and didn’t think to check the Unilocal page before; now that I’m here to write my own review, I’m not the least bit surprised to see fifty 5-Star experiences on their page. Not only are these ladies awesome at cutting hair and recommending products, they are nice. Like really nice. The shop is also adorable– covered in handmade artwork and protected by a small, friendly dog that will let you pet it’s ears when you’re waiting under the hair dryer. They do dry cuts, which I’d never tried before but really liked, and book two weeks out because they are(understandably) popular. If you are somehow still on the fence, please take my word for it and go!

I have never written a review of anything before… I don’t care for unadulterated opinions… But this salon is everything. Not only did I get the best hair cut/dye job of my life, I felt like I was home on Christmas Day the entire time I was there. Everyone at this establishment deserves all of the praise/success/luck/joy. It’s more than a hair salon.

Yesterday was my first time at Headchop. Martha cut my hair — and I’m beyond pleased. My experience started with a cheery greeting from Katie — the salon’s assistant. About 10 minutes later, Martha walked out and introduced herself. So far, the friendly vibe is really putting me at ease. After getting me set up in a chair, Martha started out by asking me how I’d like my hair cut and which products I use. She then walked me through her plans for my ‘do step-by-step. At this point, she hasn’t even picked up the scissors and it’s a 5-star experience. In short, Martha did a fabulous job and talked to me in depth about styling and products that work best for my hair texture. For context, I’m African American and have a short curly afro. Originally, I only wanted my sides and back taken in, and a more flattering, tapered shape. The cut turned out shorter than I anticipated, BUT I NEEDEDIT because my ends were dry and split. Martha assured me that trimming off those ends will help me grow it out — which is essentially the end goal. I’ve already scheduled a follow up appointment for color. Lastly, shout-out to Katie. Not only is she sweet and personable, she washed and took extra time to style and dry my hair– and gave me tips re: products.

Don’t go to Elma. She WON’T make you feel like an Indian Beyoncé in glasses with a sick wild curly haircut of your dreams. PS. Her name is Elma, not Elna. I suck.

I’ve been growing out my hair for a few years and, after a misguided later cut tht made me look more like a spaniel than a starlet, had kept my locks in the same blunt cut. It was time for a change, but I couldn’t make up my mind. So, I booked a spur of the moment appointment with Martha Ellen, hoping she could provide guidance. After a consultation(why do these always involve me waving my hands vaguely and going«er» a lot?) we decided on layers, but more dramatic and starting higher up. She also informed me that I have curly hair. I do? Seriously? I’m almost 30, how has this been a secret for so long? I think Martha Ellen might be a wizard with X-ray hair vision. It was quite a process, especially being used to more basic styles. She cut my hair dry, then I went off for a shampoo and some fantastic conditioner that I am definitively buying when I go back, then a bonnet-dryer, then a regular dryer, then gel and smooshing(that’s for the curls) then finally some more little snips to make it perfect. By the end I think she was cutting single strands with laser-like precision. In a weird twist ending, I actually started to really like the cut only after I washed it at home. Turns out I’m not a gel person, but once it got a chance to air dry, my hair started doing this mega-rad«it just does this and I didn’t even try» tousled babe-ly mane thing that I am super into. And yeah, it’s still kinda curly. I couldn’t book that month-out trim appointment fast enough. Definitely recommend!
