The ½ salad ½ sandwich deal is cheap and … nice & healthy. The New England Bounty salad — I think that’s its name — is very tasty.

I like this addition to the GSU(George Sherman Union) for all you non BU-ers. The bread is fresh/high quality and you have choices like baguette, whole wheat chibatta and more. They started doing more soups and salads too now so you can do a ½ soup or salad and ½ sandwich. Their sandwiches are generously portioned(read can be two meals if you are on a college budget like me) It’s a little over 6 for the sandwich(or ½ and ½) with your choice of apple or small bag of Cape Cod Chips. I always get pretty much the same– garlic oil, fresh mozzarella, tomato, and basil. It’s a great sandwich– although once in a while their basil is not fresh. You can choose to get it grilled or not. The wait is usually 5 – 10 minutes, but at least the ordering system(pen and paper) means that I’ve never had an error with my sandwich. More fast moving places should do this I think. Anyway, you can choose all sorts of things here really– there are lots and lots of options, which is what we all want in our over personalized, individualistic society, right? :)

Charles River Bread Co.(not to be confused with the world’s largest supplier of mice — Charles River Co.) has replaced D’Angelo’s and damn if that’s not a good thing then I don’t know what is. You can build your own and they also have 10 or so specialty sandwiches with local-themed names like Brookline Portobello and Allston Asiago. These are prepared on one of a few types of excellent fresh bread and come with a pickle and a small bag of Cape Cod chips — all for just over 6 dollars. The Charles River Gondola one I had was really good on crusty french baguette. A return visit is being scheduled.
