Not even close to authentic Japanese sushi. Even kitchen food are somewhat confusing mix of many asian styles. Kroger sushi is probably a bit better.

The food here was just ok(maybe, it was just that we were starving! It could’ve been worse) not the greatest I’ve had. Guess ive been spoiled being from Southern California, having crazy fresh and amazing sushi places allover, but we where not at all in awe of this place. We ordered the Gyoza(which tasted like it had been cooked in old oil), the miso soup was awful, our Teriyaki orders where interesting to say the least, never experienced items plated like they do here. The only thing we enjoyed was the apple Sake. Very dissapointed.

I will not be returning. I Would have put zero stars if not for the really nice waitress. Here is why I will NEVER return: –The owner is terrible! She was not accommodating when I asked if we could add chicken to the side order of fried rice. I even said to charge us for it. She still said ‘no’. WTF kinda customer service is that??? –The décor is from like 1992. For real, put some love into the place. –The sushi makers just stand there and stare at you. I mean it was a little uncomfortable. –the owner, again she was just not hospitable in anyway. She should at least act like she gives a crap about the customer. Rather, she just sits upfront, removed from the customers and restaurant.

Came in on a Sunday night for dinner while I was visiting Blacksburg. The place was dead with only one other couple there. My fiancé and I both got spicy tuna rolls with the miso soup. The miso soup was really good. The spicy tuna rolls were nice and came as an 8-piece maki; tasted fresh and were large. The only criticism I have is that they mash the tuna, sauce, and cucumber together all in one instead of keeping them separate so you can taste all of the components of the roll; they also didn’t include the«crunch» that I receive in other spicy tuna rolls. Also, the waitress seemed to be in a rush to get out of there which didn’t seem very comforting. Other than that, it was a pleasant meal and I will return again for sushi whenever I’m back in the area.

Just had lunch here. The service was fast and friendly. The sushi was fresh and well made — my fried rice was yummy too. Three of us eat well and the bill was less than $ 50. The rest room was clean.

Awesome sushi. I had chicken temporara bento box. It was amazing. Literally the best Japanese place in Blacksburg. Free soup, hot towel, good food. What else do u want?

Back in Blacksburg for the first time in a million years and looking for sushi(since I was by myself). Very pleasantly surprised to come across the Sake House on my explorations. And on Monday $ 1 sushi night of all nights! Checked the reviews, which were mostly very good. Took the plunge and was rewarded with food sushi and good decide at great prices! I wouldn’t say the portions were overwhelming but the price for 6 Nigri, 2 maki rolls, one special maki re and two draft beers wouldn’t have gotten me one good room and a draft in NoVa! Can’t wait to come back… any day of the week!

Rudeness is not appreciated, but the food is great. This is probably my 5th or 6th time visiting Sake House. I have always had wonderful sushi there and I have met the owner on various occasions and she is wonderful. However, this is the third time that I have had Christie(sp? Kristie?) as a server, and each time, my overall experience has deteriorated. The other hosts/hostesses are always very nice and seating is never a problem, and many of the wait staff are great! The sushi is top-grade and I’ve never known anyone to have been served something they didn’t love. Unfortunately, service is a big part of how I view a restaurant. Christie has been rude to not only me, but many of the people I have visited with. And even worse, when I have described my experience to others, they always ask«Oh! Did you have Christie(or they would describe her)? She’s so rude.» So this is not something that only I have experienced. I would suggest the Crunch and Alaska Rolls, as these are a couple of my go-to’s; however, I would also suggest to avoid this particular server.

It’s a dine in sushi restaurant that seems a Little like it wishes it was a take-out place. Maybe they do have take-out??? Anyway the price is ok for what you get but I’ve had better sushi.

Been here a bunch of times because I like sushi and there are limited options in the area. The sushi is adequate quality … nothing amazing, and you end up spending a lot. I had one of the noodles dishes once and was underwhelmed. My wife gets a tempura box … it is OK as well.

I came here with my parents at least once every year because the sushi is fresh and prices are reasonable. As an ikura(salmon roe) lover, I’m usually skeptical about ordering it at most Japanese restaurants because I don’t know how fresh it is, so this is one of the few places where I know it’s definitely fresh! Needless to say, the ikura nigiri gets two thumbs up! For sashimi lovers, the ichiban combination lets you try a lot of items. Also the spicy tuna and soft shell crab rolls are delicious. Also save some room for green tea or red bean ice cream! The restaurant is clean and the servers are attentive and helpful!

I’ve been to a lot of places for sushi and this is one of my absolute favorites. They used to be located in Salem for many years but made the move to Blacksburg when the shopping center got started. Owner(Jenny) is almost always on premises and chips in with nearly every role from hosting to making sushi. Many of the kitchen and wait staff are long term and very good at what they do. Also worth noting that it’s absolutely a family run business. A lot of folks will try it for the first time by going there on Monday for their Dollar Sushi night, which is a good deal but not really the types of things that I usually order. I think that Monday’s deal is that nigiri is $ 1 per piece for most kinds, regular rolls are half price and specialty rolls are $ 2 off. You have to pay cash for anything of that sort but you can pay credit for anything else. I tend to stick to the specialty rolls. The Wildcat is great and I often ask them to put in spicy tuna instead of the grilled tuna. The Naruto rolls are nice too. They are wrapped in cucumber and have a great light feel. There’s also a few off menu favorites of mine but I won’t mention those because I don’t know how secret they are. There’s at least 3 though. The best deal that they have is the power lunch. It’s like the wildcat roll but with spicy tuna. It’s cut into pieces and tempura fried, whereas the wildcat is tempura fried and cut into pieces. The meal comes with salad and soup and is under $ 10(I can’t remember exactly what it is). It’s not always listed on the special board but I am pretty sure you can always get it. Another great lunch option are the bento boxes. They’re loaded with good stuff and come with salad and soup. A word on the salad dressing… a-ma-zing. I often save it to dip other things into later. They have a great big 2 person dinner that is an excellent deal too at $ 38.95. Anyone who thinks that they are over priced likely hasn’t tried this out. When they were at their Salem location it used to come on a boat. Not the case anymore. It’s not as cool I guess but it’s still great and will definitely fill you up. Lots of nigiri, maki, and sashimi(chef’s choice on the kinds), rice, soup, salad. What more do you need? I have a salmon allergy and they have always done a good job to keep my meal safe. I go there often enough that they always remember it too! The help is great, friendly and go out there way to make you feel at home. Don’t judge them on their Monday crazy time though. Considering the volume that they go through I think it’s remarkable how quickly you get your food overall. Go on a night when it’s not so crazy and enjoy this great family run and operated shop. Very happy that they came to Blacksburg!

Taste doesn’t justify the price. They do a special on Mondays and that’s the only day of the week I would visit sake house. They should be lucky they are one of the only sushi places in the area. Slow service, but the servers are nice.

We arrived to this restaurant around 5:15pm on a Monday night. It was understandably empty considering how early it was. We had a group of 10 and were waiting on one person. Everyone was starving and ready to begin ordering. The hostess refused to seat us, stating that we MUST have our entire party present first. We waited 15 minutes(time we we would have spent ordering drinks and sushi) and still were not seated. Finally we just said the guy wasn’t coming since we were tired if waiting. Once sat, a server came up to take our order. I asked her a question about the fish, which she answered with an annoyed look(keep in mind the restaurant is still relatively empty). I asked another question and the server ROLLEDHEREYES at me! Extremely rude. I heard later that she also rolled her eyes at the others in our group. When our final person finally arrived with a friend, they refused to put them at our table even though we had room! The whole thing was extremely bazaar. Everyone in our party was unhappy. The customer service was atrocious! We will NOT be returning.

Sake House is known for their bargain sushi on Mondays, and not being a fan of crowds, I’ve always avoided it. Recently went on a Friday night, and we were seated without waiting. Everyone at our table enjoyed the sushi and the spicy shrimp appetizer with wasabi mayo. The shrimp was just spicy enough, and didn’t ruin your palate for the rest of the meal. Good service. We elected to drink water, as we were not enticed by the beer selection.

My boyfriend and I came here for lunch today and after this trip I’m sure we’d never come back for dinner again. The lunch specials are great and cost way less than the dinner menu. We got the shrimp tempura bento box and the chicken teriyaki bento box and the amount of food they gave us was very comparable to the dinner portions. Each bento box came with miso soup, salad, gyoza, fried rice, and fresh fruit(oranges). They only gave 2 shrimp in my box but they gave the same amount of vegetable tempura that they usually do in the dinner portion. In the chicken teriyaki box, they gave just as much chicken as they would for dinner. Lunch specials are half the price of dinner(which is really expensive) and for dinner they only give you the entrée and rice, soup, and salad. It’s a great place to find some quality Asian/Japanese food in Blacksburg.

Now, I’ve only ever been here on Mondays and enjoyed their sushi but I can still give a fair and balanced review: ZOMG $ 1SUSHI! *Ahem* What I mean to say is that I was excited to hear that Sake House has dollar sushi night every Monday night. Yes, it’s cash only and that’s kind of a pain but they don’t skimp on the high-quality sushi that you’re getting for only a dollar so that kind of pain is the kind of pain I can easily tolerate. Their servers have always been super friendly to us. Even on busy nights we’ve had good drink refills, fantastically friendly servers, and quick turn-around on getting us hooked up with more sushi when we’re done with our first order. I may even have to try them on a night when they’re not slammed with the college crowd who, like me, are looking for a good deal on great food!

They have excellent sushi, and some really good specials. Be careful though, the first time I went here it was a Monday and they only took cash that day. They said they had a sign at the front but the waitress never mentioned anything about it. But if your looking for sushi with a laid back atmosphere then this is a good choice.

I came here with my CAS family for a 8 o’clock dinner. What impressed me most about this place is the interior atmosphere. The room we dined in had a warm lighting and a comfortable and cozy atmosphere The food, however, was not so impressive. I order the stir-fried udon noodles. When the dish first came out, I was excited because the portion was quite big for a Japanese restaurant. I was upset to find that the noodles were just stirf ried with regular white sauce that is found in many Chinese restaurants(yes I am aware this is a Japanese joint). There was a lot of shrimp in the dish, but that didn’t make up for the un-creativeness and blandness of the noodles. I also had a chance to try the fried tempura dish. The fried tempura tasted okay, but you cannot go wrong with fried stuff, right? It wasn’t mind blowing, however, and both dishes were past $ 12. Lastly, I tried the fried ice cream, which was quite good. The vanilla ice cream was coated with a light, sweet batter. The dessert was a decent size for $ 4. It wasn’t as interesting as a expected, again. All and all, the food at Sake house was mediocre, which is not always bad but for more than $ 12, I expect good food. I would give this place a try again, but not anytime in the near future.
