I chose this restaurant because of the healthy bowls they offer — not very Mexican, but intriguing nonetheless. I chose the cauliflower bowl without cheese and 15 minutes later the waiter came over to tell me that the cheese was mixed in with the cauliflower, but the chef offered to substitute in sautéed cauliflower for me. Even better! I love it when restaurants are willing to work with my needs. My dinner turned out delicious and was enough food for two meals. Thank you, Mestizo!

This is my all time favorite Mexican restaurant in the Baton Rouge area. I love that it’s quaint, inviting, and delivers excellent food & service. Wonderful drink selections that compliment their menu… that itself keeps me coming back! I could name off several dishes I’ve had here & not one has disappointed. My husband and I went last night & had the pleasure of having Blaine as our waiter. He was wonderful! As always, we will be back :)

My wife and I enjoyed our third time dining there last night. Before then, I was stuck in ordering the fried avocado as an appitizer, and the Delgado as my entrée. This time, our waiter Blaine recommended the Puebla. Man this did not dissappoint(and Mestizo’s never has). Panko crusted fried pablano pepper topped with grilled skirt steak, caramelized onions, and avocado over a bed of brown rice. Compliment by a spicy peanut mole with grilled shrimp and potato wedges. This dish is out of this world with flavor, contrast, color, and portion. And it was up against the great Delgado(which I had ordered twice before). This place is a hidden gem, and a must try for cuisine lovers of all types. They really have something special going on in the kitchen, and those in «the know» have enjoyed it exclusively. Will be back, and bringing friends! Thanks Blaine!

Great meal, great service. Would recommend this place to anyone who likes authentic Latin cuisine. Best salsa on the planet… warm, crispy tortilla chips. Sauces with depth and a range of flavor. Mestizo is a true mixture of culture and food. This will be my new go-to place when I want some really feel good food.

Best Mexican food I’ve ever had! The pulled pork cracklin’ nachos just got my heart! It was so good! I highly recommend this dish! The trio plate was excellent. Lots of food, enough to share even when the portion was intended for 1. The space was a bit small where we sat, so loud noises and crowds were not a surprise to us. To make up for that, our server was super nice! We enjoyed our experience there a lot. Will come back pretty soon for the pulled pork cracklin nachos!

Really good Mexican restaurant in town. I just wish the atmosphere was better. The hostess was horrible. She was obviously in the weeds. For a table of 7, she said it would be 25 minutes. I waited for OVER an hour. When she was asked about it, she copped an attitude. I watched her sit multiple tables that came in after us that easily could’ve been pushed together to accommodate us. It’s unfortunate when an employee makes the establishment look bad and I end up taking a star off the review because of it. On the plus side, the food is wonderful, although the entrees get a little pricy for Mexican food. We split the sampler app and it was great. I could’ve eaten the whole bean dip bowl by myself. I had the chicken quesadilla and the chicken was perfectly cooked. I don’t normally rave about a quesadilla. They also offer wheat tortilla which is a plus for me!

This is my favorite place to enjoy Mexican cuisine in BR. The owner could not be any friendlier, nor could the food be any more delicious. They have a generous selection of tequila and beer to choose from. Additionally, they have this delicious dessert with chocolate infused tequila liqueur that you will definitely want to try. Jim(the owner) also has ample room for parties and accommodates a variety of organizations for their social gatherings, including the capital city alliance. Go out and support this restaurant and enjoy your food as it will most definitely be delicious!

Got a 225 deal so we decided to try this place out. The atmosphere was OK. Nice and clean, but it was completely empty @ 7:30. The chips were standard for a Mexican place, but the salsa was lacking flavor. It had some bite, but tasted like tomato purée. We ordered a liter of frozen house Margaritas, for $ 15. Kind of steep for what tasted like a frozen premix. The food menu was interesting with crawfish and crab versions of standard Mexican fare, like tacos. The prices were pretty steep. $ 17 for a quesadilla and $ 21 for tacos steak tacos with rice and beans. $ 8.50 for queso dip? We spotted the tapas menu and ordered a few items to share. The pork enchilada was good, although a bit sweet for my taste. The beef relleno was and interesting twist. A cheese stuffed pepper topped with taco beef. The chicken chimi was really good. Light and crispy, stuffed with chicken and topped with cheese sauce. I’d get the chimi again, but at $ 8 it should come with rice and beans. Nothing really stood out and the prices were high in our opinion.

A great discovery! The mixologist has created an amazing array of drink options! I started with the Mexican Mojito and ended with a Bee hive! Chips are thin, freshly cooked and the guacamole so fresh!!! We got to taste fresh mole verde! Yum! I had the del mar tacos too! The fish was incredible! If you want authentic, come in and be a friend forever!!! If you want boring… stay away!

Finally gave it a try. Disappointed, after all of the hype. The atmosphere was lacking. Waitstaff was OK. The food was alright. But no reason to return. I heard that the shrimp and crab enchiladas were good, so that’s what I ordered. Never expected the shrimp and crab to be ground up. It did not live up to the hype or the prices.

I love this place more and more every time I come here! The food is always on point, the service is good and the atmosphere is always fun. Of course I had to order the shrimp and crab queso because it’s my favorite and it’s so delicious. I love their regular salsa too because it doesn’t just taste like that canned tomato paste like some of the other restaurants in town, you can actually taste the cilantro and onions in it. The tortilla soup here is really good too, it’s loaded with lots of vegetables and chicken. Now lets talk about this new AMAZING guacamole. I love it! I think it’s officially my new favorite thing here. Bacon, feta and shrimp guacamole = BESTIDEAEVER! I was already a fan of their regular guacamole but now you add bacon and feta to it? It’s sooo good. It’s really fresh and it has just the right amount of bacon and feta to where it’s not too salty. The shrimp are cooked perfectly(I think they were grilled) and are a nice tasty touch. Y’all are just gonna have to try it for yourselves. I also like that Jim stops by to check and see if everything’s ok with our food and just to say hello, he’s such a nice guy so it’s always an enjoyable experience.

Could be great, but missed the mark… Came here after the LSU McNeese game, and was surprised at the menu items — quinoa at a Mexican restaurant??? What that’s awesome, until you actually eat the food. We ordered the queso, bean dip, cheese enchiladas, crawfish and seafood enchiladas, and another combo meal with quinoa. The restaurant was very accommodating, but the food wasn’t that great, but has the potential to be superior. The food was either too bland or too salty, I left bloated and hungry for more… sorry better luck next time.

Once we were finally seated for lunch, we were greated by an unexpected guest– A ROACH was crawling around on the wall. It was so gross, we called the waitress over for help and she took her time before squashing it. There server was seen seconds later bringing out food, barely enough time for her to wash her hands. We enjoyed chips and salsa, even though the first chips were burnt. We ordered the Queso which I found yummy, however the wheat chips that came with it were burnt. You would think that they were whole wheat or something. You would think if they make you pay an extra fee($ 4) for the chips, they would serve them appropriately. For the entrée I ordered a spinach salad with shrimp. The dressing it was served with was a little sweet for my liking. Our server did come back and offer us dessert, we were served the cheapest item on the menu, the churros, they were hard and not enjoyable. If it wasn’t for the drinks the whole experience would have been crappy. Good thing the buzz kept the good vibes flowing.

I decided to give this place another try for restaurant week(I had been years and years ago but don’t remember much). The free chips and salsa were pretty average, no complaints there and the service was good. They made sure to refill and ask if we needed refills. I ordered the springroll as an appetizer, it was good with the sauce albeit a little bit hard/messy to eat. Things kind of kept falling out, but the flavors were good. My main course was the soft shell crab torta with sweet potato fries. The fries weren’t oily and had a nice sweetness to them. The crab was good, however i felt the bread didn’t necessarily hold up well. My tomato and crab kept sliding to the side, again just a bit messy to eat. I could have done without the cheese, the sandwich would’ve been good without it. For dessert I got the patron chocolate bread pudding. You could definitely taste the patron in there, the chocolate flavor wasn’t very strong. It came served in a pretty glass. The serving was also plentiful.

Better than average Mexican. They have dishes that use meats not normally found in Texmex cuisine, duck, crawfish. The sweet potato crawfish salad is really flavorful if you like a sweet kick. The duck empanadas are great too. Margaritas are a little pricey for what you get.

Shame on me for not taking a pic of the Pacifico Platter when I had the chance! First for teh drink menu — great cocktail ingredients. I ended up ordering a Stag’s Leap Chardonnay since I rarely EVER see it on the menu anywhere, much less by the glass! I was a little disappointed that a red variety Stag’s Leap wasn’t on the menu, but completely satisfied with my choice. I have never been to Mestizo’s before and originally went for my friend’s UYE: Pre Cinco de Mayo party, but my friend and I arrived early for a mean since we were starving. I didn’t know that the crawfish taco that came with the platter was going to be a crunchy shell — but it wasn’t a taco bell crunchy shell. It was a bit pliable too, which I loved, so it was obviously homemade. I am a taco FANATIC(ask anyone!!!) so it definitely would have been nice if the waitress had told asked us about the hard or oft shell option. Either way, it was delicious, and I would order it again as is! The chef has good knife skills, because the taco al carbon was cut in perfect little pieces and cooked evenly all the way through, yet tender and flavorful. I am used to eating/cooking taco beef marinated in lime and it could have used a little more citrus on the marinade but the queso underneath was AWESOME. The crab enchilada was light and moist and not fishy tasting like a lot of crab is. I didn’t get the chance to try the guacamole this time around, but will definitely go for it next time!

I’ve been here 3 times and I love it! My new fave Mexican restaurant in BR! The queso dip is on fire! I especially love to scoop their delicious salsa on top of a freshly dipped tortilla with queso. I can’t wait to order the queso con shrimp and crab dip next time. Speaking of shrimp and crab… Get the Cancun! it is their specialty dish here at Mestizo. A handed down generational home-made recipe of shrimp and crab with cheese blend, that will knock your socks off! The Cancun comes with shrimp and crab enchilada, crawfish and spinach enchilada, guacamole, and crawfish taco. All the tacos are fabulous too! Also, since its the 16th birthday for the restaurant, there are great specials month long. Just to name a few: 6 beef tacos/$ 16, bottles of wine/$ 16, there are weekly and monthly drink specials too! The staff are incredibly friendly and proud to work here! They are so knowledgeable about the menu, how everything is cooked and prepared, and are all about the mission of the establishment. Which is to bring a flair of Louisiana cuisine to enhance traditional Mexican dishes. The owner, Jim is proud of his heritage and culture and it shows in his food and desserts! I had the pleasure of enjoying the bread pudding made with Patron Chile Chocolate Liqueur twice! If you’re worried about calories, Jim has thought of that too. Mestizo is part of Eat Healthy BR, therefore there is a «healthy» section on the menu. Try to find that in another Mexican restaurant! Soon to come will be a nutritional breakdown on the menu, similar to a food label. Great things are happening here everyday, you really need to check it out!

Great fusion restaurant. I haven’t had a bad meal yet. I ordered the Quinoa Mexicana. It comes with chicken & steak topped with avocado, grilled onions, and sautéed zucchini/squash Healthy and filling dish.
