Always a great time here, food is always good. I normally get the duck empanadas but tonight I had an evening and I enjoyed the taco trio with fish, barbarcoa and carnitas. Scrum-diddley-umptious. Also keeping true to my path, they offer a military discount of 30%. Not screaming loud for a Thursday night, just right.

Went for lunch… margarita prices went up, food prices went up, and the food wasn’t as good. I went with a friend who used to go with me for lunch there frequently. We both feel like we ate a bowl of grease from our usual orders.

The service was excellent and my food arrived piping hot but my overall opinion was based on the menu and it’s lack of cheddar cheese. The piped in music is in Spanish and has that folksy flare to it so you really get that Tex Mex vibe and then you realize it’s Ameri-Mex instead. I ordered the Shrimp Chipotle appetizer and the shrimp were huge. Six jumbo shrimp seasoned with what tasted like a spicy smoked BBQ sauce served on a hard corn tortilla, a spoon of mild pico de gallo and 4 slices of avocado on the side. There was also a small ramekin of white queso sauce(lots of bland bechamel mixed with cheap white American cheese) on the side. The 4 soft corn tortillas were extra but worth it especially since the rock hard one the shrimp were sitting on was inedible. The food was fresh tasting and served piping hot, the chips were hot and toasty, salsa was average, service was excellent and the ambiance was great. If you like the flavor pallet of Ameri-Mex and prefer your food on the milder side, you should give them a try. As for me I like my Tex-Mex a bit on the spicy side and made with cheddar or Monterrey jack and white American cheese is no substitute for either!

Service is lousy. Drinks are mediocre. Food is the only redeeming quality. Or it is when it’s made correctly. My dish was brought out wrong twice. The server didn’t seem concerned that my entire party had finished eating before he brought the right thing to the table. Never had a manager apologize or even come to the table. Never offered any level of compensation. Completely unsatisfactory service. Will likely never return.

At there recently for the first time in a long time. Food was good, served quickly, waiter was nice. Typical mexican restaurant, and we enjoyed it.

Great place for mixed and frozen drinks. Terrible food. I had the trio taco plate and I must say disgusting.

We quit going to la Carretas on bluebonnet for our weekly happy hour margaritas because the food had just gotten so bad and the margarita prices had gone up(and they use some powdered stuff to mix into them). We decided to give the government location a try, since it was good a couple years ago on a dinner date with friends. The margaritas are good, but not hand mixed, I suspect they use the powdered stuff too. The flautas were good, crispy with plenty of seasoned chicken but they gave us a teaspoon of sour cream for 8 of them. We split the burrito al pastor, pulled pork with pineapples and chipotle. It was tasty, but the meat wasn’t hot, and it was chopped, not pulled, as the menu said. The plate was ridiculously hot while the food wasn’t. It makes me concerned about their food prep practices. It certainly isn’t freshly prepared or even mixed for our meal. I smell microwave. All in all, decent for the price, and good happy hour deals.

We go about 3 times a month and always order the same meal: steak and eggs. The last two times we went the steak tasted off… really off. We could not eat it. The service was also pretty slow and I was quite upset to see the waiter continue to bring tequila shots out to a woman there with her two small children when obviously she would be getting behind the wheel with them. Hopefully when we go this week it will be better. I always look forward to going but this location is letting me down.

Wow!!! I just looked at me previous review and it’s spot on IMHO. Let me give you the bad first. On my last visit they served me an old burrito. The steak on the inside was old and cold. The meat tasted like it sat up in a pot waiting to be used. I had them fix me another one and they still used more old meat but they throw it on the burner and BURNED it. Then they put in back inside the burrito… terrible right. The good, the service was awesome, it was the waiter’s fault but the cooks trying to save a dollar and less work. Sorry, I’m not going back to that location and I’ve given them another try already.

I’m giving these guys 3 stars b/c it means A-ok. And they are. I’ve been emptying my pockets for these guys for years now and seen them grow into a Trump-like dynasty in southern Louisiana. I must point out that I said«emptying my pockets». This is my biggest issue with the franchise. Price. They raise their prices every year, it seems. Are the ingredients better? No. Is there more variety? No. Are the portions bigger? No. Are the margs stronger? No. It’s a money grab because they need to pay for all of their new properties and they know locals will pay it. That being said, the food is… ok. There is a lot better Mexican food in town. I find the meals to be rather bland. Obviously the price hikes aren’t going towards spices. I do eat here often because it is right by my house. I don’t drink here often because their margaritas are way too expensive to enjoy. I usually have the chimichanga, fish tacos or taco salad. These are my go to’s. The food is always consistent. Consistently average. Customer service? TOPNOTCH. That’s one reason I do come back. They are always smiling, friendly and quick. La Carreta is a Baton Rouge institution now(started in Hammond). They better watch out or they’re going to price themselves out of business when they come up against these new kids in town that are focusing on great TASTING food, not just food.

First time for lunch but what a surprise! Food was very lacking in flavor and so was service. This is truly unfortunate. Salsa on the thin side but did have some spice and chips were fresh and warm. The only saving grace for the lunch.

Nasty food! It was dry and unseasoned… this was a disappointment because it seems that they believe they are serving great food because no one is complaining. This is not authentic Mexican food. It’s not even acceptable food, seems like the chef was lazy and just didn’t care about quality. Also, the waiter was nowhere to be found! Great happy hour deals tho. but without the food to supplement, it’s pointless. Kona grill at Perkins is better.

Some of my favorite Mexican in town. They just redid the restaurant inside and out, so it is much nicer. Everything I’ve ordered on their menu has been great. Although, I had their table side guacamole the other night, and it was nothing special. I asked for spicy and got more of a lime cilantro flavor than anything else. My favorite is their chicken enchilada soup and their chicken quesadillas. The queso is yummy. The free salsa is a little on the spicy side. I just had their chicken fajitas. They were yummy as well. They have wheat tortillas. My brother in law loves the duck quesadillas. On some nights, they have live music. They have a nice fire pit on the back patio. Check them out!

I had a shrimp wrap that was pretty good. Sari was our server and she did a good job. There was an issue at our table with one of the orders but I’ll write about MY experience. The food came out at a decent time, but because we always had plenty of chips and salsa no one noticed the slight delay lol. Sari made a very tasty Arnold Palmer! The prices are fair so I would come back. I didn’t give it five stars but it wasn’t a mind blowing dinner, but it was pretty good.

While passing by Baton Rouge we stopped at La Carreta. I know it makes no sense to go to a Mexican restaurant in another state when you live in Texas! But, who’s judging?!(lol). We were actually very surprised and impressed by this place. The restaurant is very nice and well maintained. They kind of had a rock and roll theme going inside. They have outdoor and indoor seating. There was an art show of local artist going on in the back room and a live band playing in the main area. There was a full bar with digital televisions showing some games as well. Service was great and so was the food. Margaritas were amazing! I really liked this restaurant! I wish it were in Houston! Definitely stop by if you are in the area!

I have been a patron of La Carreta for almost 20 years. My college buddies and I used to hit up the Hammond location almost every day after class for fiesta hour or dinner… or sometimes just to study. Since then, I moved to Baton Rouge and low and behold, Saul opens a store ½ mile from my house! The salsa can’t be beat… but be sure not to fill up on it cause their entrees are delicioso. My favorites are the Chicken Fajitas(2 beans no rice), Burrito Verde, Mixed Fish Ceviche, Chipolte Shrimp, and Tacos de Carne Asada. The staff are very friendly, the food is always hot, and the Fiesta Is Always On!
