Chinese Wok

This is, by far, the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I gave the place a chance as new restaurants often have a break in period before they hit their stride. Besides, this is a fast food «wok» restaurant. You don’t go to these looking for a fine dining experience. Cheap, quick Chinese take-​out should be fairly generic and unsurprising. But Chinese Wok manages to screw up even the simplest dish. That’s what I ordered today, moo goo gai pan. This should be just chicken in a simple white sauce, maybe some mushrooms and snow peas. But the important part is the white sauce. It should at least be white! Theirs is a sickly greyish color. It has an odd sheen. And they added all the vegetables you don’t want in moo goo gai pan. I’ve never before found carrot slices and cauliflower in moo goo gai pan. If I wanted chicken with vegetables, I’d have ordered it. And I can deal with unrequested veggies, but that grey sauce was too much. As for rest of my lunch special, the hot & sour soup was tolerable, but the pork slices in it tasted weird. And their fried rice looked and tasted like instant rice; dry, broken and bland. The egg roll was the highlight of my meal. It was exactly how you expect an egg roll to taste and I’m sure it came that way in the bulk package.

This is obviously a regional chain (I’ve reviewed the location in La Porte), but the Bacliff location is worthy of a review.
First, the restaurant is clean, brightly lit and the folks here are friendly. The dining room has plenty of seating — booths and tables — but this is really more reminiscent of an old-​school takeout place, with a menu up on the wall behind the cash register. My order from this location was to-​go.
The hot & sour soup here is as it should be … some spice and some tang. It’s actually very good. Better than most in the area. The folks here use roast pork and a nice balance of vinegar and white pepper. The broth is semi-​thick (excellent for drinking). Though it’s missing the velvety egg strands, they top it all off with fresh mushrooms, which is different but welcomed. Good soup.
I’m not so impressed with the egg rolls. They taste just like the ones you buy from the ‘club’ stores in bulk — too much ginger and black pepper. If this is your thing, you’ll be in hog heaven here. I prefer an egg roll that’s heavy on the cabbage and easy on the spice.
The General Tso’s Chicken (it’s what I order from places such as this) is good. Not great. The folks here seem to use mostly breast meat. Fine. But the sauce is sweet — like dessert sweet. (I asked them to make this dish spicy.) Again, if you’re a fan of food court Chinese, this is your place.
I’m giving this place three stars. Why?
Chinese Wok offers exactly what I expect. So what if I’m interested in a special-​ordered General Tso’s with multiple flavor components. This isn’t the place. But one thing is for sure: They are consistent here and the food is fresh.
Just be prepared to spice it up when you get home.

Absolutely love their Chinese food! Their general chow is perfect! Also love their dumpling and wonton soup. Super cheap prices and quality food. They use fresh vegetables in their stir fry and also make homemade chicken gyoza (dumplings) which are super delish! Moved to the area and this place is my go to when I get Chinese food cravings. The staff is very friendly and fast! You will not be disappointed here unless you are used to bad Chinese. But overall this place is great!

Not the best or even near the best Chinese food I have ever had. It was fast and fresh, but lacked seasoning. They were very nice there, but won’t be going back because the food just wasn’t worth it for me.

Great food and a great surprise. The entrees were bite size not requiring a knife to cut food up. The flavor was great, the rice portion was 1 cup, the entrée portion was more than the rice portion which we liked. Instead of tossing rice, we had more entrée to reheat the next day. Portion sizes of the combos is excellent.
