Nicholaus delivered an inspired short haircut that was perfectly adapted for my needs and features. I had requested a short «French-​style» bob (more blunt and tousled) with a bit of asymmetry to suit my jawline. He was attentive, supportive, and downright enthusiastic while he worked, and we were BOTH thrilled with the results. He really cared about helping me look and feel exactly like what I described. This haircut meant so much to me because I’d had very long hair for years but was experiencing a lot of hair loss due to illness and stress — this bob was like a new lease on life, and Nicholaus truly made me look like a million bucks. For $ 45. It was unbelievable. Will be going back forever and recommending him to EVERYONE.

Nicholaus has been my angel of hair for the past 6 years for a reason. he makes you look and feel brand new again .I have been to many hairstylists in town and no one and I mean NO ONE does it how nick does it. hes got this incredible gift for hair color the only hairstylist who can color my hair down to the very root never missing a spot. I dont need to take pictures in because he already knows exactly what to do with you to so that you walk out feeling like a queen. the atmosphere is my secret place of zen, chill music and lounge area, intimate, underground away from the rest of the ann arbor chaos, you wont want to leave. not to mention he is the most fun to hang with while bringing the life back to your hair. its truly a treat and privilege to be a client of nick. hes just one of the few stylists out there who really is at a level beyond the rest. a true hairstylist and artist to perfection.

First time at NOLA’s was tonight. I just moved here for school, and went to see Amy on a friend’s recommendation. My hair was super-​long and getting a little wild, and I went in looking to chop off at least eight inches.
I brought her about a million pictures of January Jones’ cutie long bob, and she took the time to ask me what I specifically liked about the cut and what I was looking for. When she finished, we took another look and she went back and did some touch-​ups to make sure it looked as good straight as it will when I dry it naturally. The cut took a little longer than usual because she helped me cut off my ponytail so that I could donate it, but it never felt rushed and she even took the time at the end to put in some curls.
Normally I’m pretty quiet if a stylist is doing something I’m not into, but I felt totally comfortable telling Amy what was/wasn’t working for me. Maybe I’m growing up, or maybe she’s just really easy to talk to. I’ll post a photo to my account in case you’re curious about the before/​after.
Agree with previous reviews that the place is teeny tiny, but that didn’t impact my experience at all. Plenty of hooks on the wall for your giant winter coat.

After literally YEARS of one-​haircut stands with different stylists around Ann Arbor, I finally found someone who is the real deal! Amy took one look at a picture of what I wanted, and then she gave me the exact cut I was looking for. She made a couple of well-​placed tweaks to deal with my crazy cow-​licks, and we were good! I have never had a haircut that made me want to go back to a stylist a second time, but now I’ll never go anywhere else! Prices are very reasonable, too.

I used to go regularly and send friends there. But the last time I booked, I got an automatic appointment cancellation. I emailed and got no reply. Tried it again, same thing. And then got a series of personal attacking and abusive messages from them. So odd! And out of the blue. I asked what happened and got another set of similarly bizarre response. Horrid!

From a great hair cut & color, to lining up my facial hair, Amy always has me looking me best. Shes very thorough, listens to what i’m looking for, and is a great resource for new ideas. The salon has a great personal atmosphere and is such a unique experience.

I have had Dani as my stylist for over a year and witnessed how much this place has grown. Dani is a creative stylist while super good at the fundamentals. If you have an idea of how your hair should turn out, she will make it happen. If you don’t, she will give you an amazing surprise. She is very focused when doing you hair and listen to every single feedback you have.
Moreover, Nick and Dani are both friendly and cool. I have always enjoyed talking to them.
It’s getting really hard to book them on Styleseat now. For Dani, you will need to book an appointment at least 2 – 3 weeks in advance. They have some walk-​in hours too but you will have to talk to them in person to arrange a last minute appointment.

My experience with Amy was great, she was very warm and welcoming when I came to get my hair cut and do a clear gloss treatment. She was knowledgable about how to best maintain my hair and I really enjoyed talking to her. My hair cut was great and very affordable, I’m definitely coming back again!

Amy is great, mellow and quiet, but also engaging. I showed her pictures of my hair when I was really happy with it, she asked a few key questions and she did a wonderful job. Cleaning up shaggy layers, blending it all well and inquiring about how much I wanted to take off the ends and taking JUST that amount off. She was very thorough and started RIGHT on time. I’m really pleased with the end result!
She was finishing up another client when I showed up and her hair also looked fantastic. Amy showed me the picture the client had brought in to emulate and it was pretty much spot on.
A few things to keep in mind, I am new to Ann Arbor & it’s a bit of a challenge to find parking when all the students are back. Second, it’s small (may be a bit of tight fit if you decide to bring a friend). Last, prices on cut are based on current hair length (i.e. it is more expensive to cut longer hair). Cash discount is offered to students and U of M employees — that’s a nice touch.

Amy is absolutely amazing! I went to 3 different places in Ann Arbor for consultations on doing my hair purple & everyone said they wouldn’t or couldn’t do it. Not Amy! She’s been so patient during the hours of bleaching & dying. I always get compliments on how awesome my color is & if the color isn’t exactly what I wanted she’s always willing to re-​do it for me. Her haircuts are great too! I have yet to get an extremely drastic cut again, but when I do I won’t hesitate to go to her :)

Amy Stough has given me my favorite haircut! I asked for a bit of creativity on her part and told her what I liked and didn’t like. She worked with my hair type and natural settings to design a low-​maintenance (required for me) uneven pixie-​cut that I love! My friends keep giving me compliments and several people asked who did my hair. I started with Amy years ago when I lived in Michigan. I live in San Francisco now and whenever I make it back to visit family I schedule an appointment with her. Thank you Amy! Loyal customer for life!

Nic! You’re amazing! I was a bit concerned after I saw how different my hair was to my original hairstyle– but after adjusting to it, I love it! I never would have taken such a risk if I had a different hairstylist, and if I didn’t take such a risk, I wouldn’t have the amazing hair I do now. Thanks Nic! Definitely recommend!

I am so picky about my hair and haven’t found a great place in A2 so far. Nic not only got super excited about the cut, but made sure it was just the way I wanted. It’s so nice to go to a place and walk out liking the way you look, instead of awkwardly pretending… Next time I’ll make sure to bring cash to get my student discount!

Amy Stough is one of the best hair stylists in Ann Arbor. I have been to Aveda, Michael Suzanne, and Brown and Deline and no one cuts hair like Amy. She cuts with precision and she is a great listener. She also cuts my daughters hair and she is great with kids. I would recommend Amy to anyone.

I couldn’t be happier with the service or the results I got from Nicholas. He is personable, listened to what I wanted to accomplish, gave me his own ideas and was just all around fun to spend 2 hours with. Never thought I’d be so excited to spend $ 150 on my hair (highlights and cut), but I can’t wait to go back.

Seriously, this place is the best. My friend and I booked Dani for our pixie cut transformation and we couldn’t have gone to a better place. It’s tucked away under
, with a mural-​painted staircase to lead you down. The place is small, and very stylish, in that funky way only an underground salon should be.
Dani was very friendly, super awesome, and very talented with her fingers! She took our photos and gave us exactly what we wanted. She gave us really cool styling tips that I had never heard of before, but perfect for what we wanted. She also gave me ideas on what to do coloring wise for my hair.
Normally it would have been $ 25 (still cheap!) but we are students so she gave us a student discount, only $ 20! Also you can go in for free bang and neck trims as needed. afterward.
She takes appointments, she takes walk-​ins, credit cards, cash, it’s all magic.
